Learning doesn't have to be a "loner" experience.

Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky suggested that knowledge is constructed through our interactions with others.
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Learning) leverage our inherent social needs by bringing people together to learn the same material in a virtual group. Students can express what they're feeling and experiencing with others in a shared space, making the learning journey more enjoyable and less daunting.

As people gain confidence, they often enjoy friendly competition with fellow learners to push themselves to compete exercises and assignments. Recognition is part of our need for building self-esteem—and some courses have gamification built in to reward student accomplishments and community helpfulness.

This is an interesting intro to social constructionism as it applies to eLearning.  I hope the MOOCs do what they suggest and are not just an attempt to throw jargon out there.

Laat je niet overdonderen door het feit dat het er elf zijn. Van zodra je er enkele uitkiest en toepast kun je (leer)winst boeken.

Parents, if you want an index of the social network options kids could be using, this site is useful.

Dean Mantz's curator insight, December 3, 2015 11:14 AM

Thanks to @Gust MEES for sharing this resource.  I believe this is a great option that schools should be providing parents that have students actively using these or similar sites.  The more parents understand the better chances for collaboration among them and respect for educational use.

How the Internet's Collective Human Intelligence Could Outsmart AI

How the Internet's Collective Human Intelligence Could Outsmart AI | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Okay, collective intelligence is deeply engrained in animals; the collective intelligence of bees and ants is well-known. You also have collective intelligence in social mammals. They signal each other about danger and where food is. But in the case of humans, our collective intelligence is much more powerful because we have language, we use technology, and we have complex social institutions. It’s a higher level of collective intelligence, and it’s fundamentally based on symbolic manipulation.

In human history, there is an increase in collective intelligence based on media that increase our ability to manipulate symbols. Currently, we are at the state of algorithmic symbol manipulation, but it’s just the beginning of this new era. My work is devoted to the improvement of collective intelligence by exploiting this new medium.

There are a lot of misunderstandings about collective intelligence. The first is that we have to create it; we don’t have to, it already exists. The second idea that should be avoided is that collective intelligence is group think. It’s just the opposite of group think. It is the integration of variety and singularities in the philosophical sense, not the Kurzweilian. It’s not uniform, it’s thinking together.

This was certainly an eye opener that many of the skills I am learning as a pre-service teacher in the areas of ITC and pedagogy relate directly to skills that are desired in the workforce.  This strengthens my resolve to be able to teach students using these pedagogies to ensure that they are successful in their lives post schooling.

Why We Can No Longer Rely Only On Schools And Companies For Professional And Personal Development

Why We Can No Longer Rely Only On Schools And Companies For Professional And Personal Development | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

There once was a time where everything you needed to know for your career was taught to you by the educational institution you attended and the company you worked for. You would go get your four year bachelor’s degree in whatever topic and that information would stay with you for a little while, then you would periodically take some additional classes offered through your company.

Today by the time you graduate with a four year college degree most of the information you will learn will be outdated and perhaps obsolete.

The world has changed and it’s up to us as individuals (and as companies) to make sure that we can change too. Organizations must enable employees by deploying the right technologies to connect people and by supporting employees and allowing them learn outside of the company. Individuals must get rid of all excuses and understand that they can learn anything they want anytime they want to learn it.

It’s inspiring — in a crazy sort of way — to consider how efficient Google can be in keeping track of information about you. Today, Google announced the launch of “Your Timeline,” a tool in Google Maps that shares with you all the places you have been. It works if you chose to store your Location History with Google.

Product manager Gerard Sanz detailed the feature in blog post, as the company gradually rolls out the timeline for Maps users.

It could definitely serve as a convenience. What with our busy lives, sometimes it’s hard to remember all the stops along the way. Google sees Your Timeline as a way to quickly recall, and even view your past whereabouts.
