For Teenage Brains, the Importance of Continuing to Learn Deeply

For Teenage Brains, the Importance of Continuing to Learn Deeply | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
It used to be that neuroscientists thought smart people were all alike. But now they think that some very smart people retain the ability to learn rapidly, like a child, well into adolescence.

“Until adolescence there are lots of new connections being made between neurons to store patterns and information collected from the environment,” Brant says.

The brain adds many synapses in the cortex. This comes at a time when the brain is especially responsive to learning. This is typically followed by cortical pruning in adolescence, as the brain shifts from hyperlearning mode.

Hewitt agrees: “The developing brain is a much more flexible organ than the mature brain.”

Learning doesn’t stop at adolescence, of course, but the “sensitive period” — where the brain is hyperlearning mode — does appear to come to an end. Learning new things gets harder.

Brain-penetrating nanoparticle attacks deadly tumors

(Nanowerk News) Scientists have developed a new approach for treating a deadly brain cancer that strikes 15,000 in the United States annually and for which there is no effective long-term therapy. The researchers, from Yale and Johns Hopkins, have shown that the approach extends the lives of laboratory animals and are preparing to seek government approval for a human clinical trial.

“We wanted to make a system that would penetrate into the brain and deliver drugs to a greater volume of tissue,” said Mark Saltzman, a biomedical engineer at Yale and principal investigator of the research. “Drugs have to get to tumor cells in order to work, and they have to be the right drugs.

Teaching quality has been defined as "instruction that enables a wide range of students to learn" (Darling-Hammond, 2012), and it is the strongest school-related factor that can improve student learning and achievement (Hanushek, 2011; Nye, Konstantopoulos, and Hedges, 2004; Rivkin, Hanushek, and Kain, 2005).

Knowing this, what is the best way to foster and provide ongoing support for good teaching practices? While every school is unique, research has identified several elements that can almost universally increase the chances for successful teacher development and create a powerful and positive school community.

Twitter for Teaching and Research

Twitter for Teaching and Research | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Objections to Twitter are usually along the lines of “What can you say in 140 characters?” “It’s all about celebrities and what they had for breakfast”; “it’s full of racist trolls”; “it’s a trivial medium – what could it possibly offer me, or teaching and learning?"

This is the image problem that Twitter has with a lot of academic staff – they just don’t see the point. I do sense a switch in this attitude though, as more and more academics start to use it, and they see their peers using it, and their students, and their institutions.

===> What they will find, once they dip their toes is that it is an incredibly useful medium for teaching, learning and research. <===

A shocking statistic about the quality of education research

A shocking statistic about the quality of education research | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A research study about research studies comes up with a cautionary finding.

For more than a decade, school reformers have said that education policy should be driven by “research” and “data,” but there’s a big question about how much faith anyone should have in a great deal of education research. This is so not only because the samples are too small or because some research projects are funded by specific companies looking for specific results, but because in nearly all cases, it appears that nobody can be certain their results are completely accurate.

“I would love to believe that every single person doing education research around the world has ethics that are as pure as the driven snow,” Plucker said. “[But] the law of averages tells us there’s something out there.”

Five Big Changes to the Future of Teacher Education

Five Big Changes to the Future of Teacher Education | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Getty In the book Teaching 2030 by Barnett Berry and 12 classroom experts, the authors pinpoint specific skills educators will need to teach in the schools of tomorrow.

They say teachers must be prepared to find and adapt new technologies to engage the digital generation, as well as work across traditional subject areas using project learning.

They must be able to use data and evidence to inform their practice and know how to work in both virtual learning environments and brick-and-mortar schools. And they’ll need to collaborate with community-based organizations and work in schools that provide all kinds of other services for students and their families.

Along those lines, Berry has outlined five changes he believes need to be made to the future of teacher education.

Adapting to the digital age: a narrative approach | Research in Learning Technology

Adapting to the digital age: a narrative approach | Research in Learning Technology | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Adapting to the digital age: a narrative approach

Via Ana Cristina Pratas
Gust MEES's insight:

What stories can be told about the fast-changing world of higher education, and what can we learn from them? Adapting to new situations, conquering fears and overcoming obstacles are familiar storylines, with particular relevance for university lecturers having to introduce new technologies in their working practices.

This is not the only story, there are many others, all unique, all with the potential to move us and make us reflect on our own situation.

This paper reports on a research project undertaken at London Metropolitan University, UK, with the aim of gathering and sharing personal accounts of successful adaptation to the digital age.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, August 12, 2013 12:09 PM

Abstract:

The article adopts a narrative inquiry approach to foreground informal learning and exposes a collection of stories from tutors about how they adapted comfortably to the digital age. We were concerned that despite substantial evidence that bringing about changes in pedagogic practices can be difficult, there is a gap in convincing approaches to help in this respect. In this context, this project takes a “bottom-up” approach and synthesises several life-stories into a single persuasive narrative to support the process of adapting to digital change. The project foregrounds the small, every-day motivating moments, cultural features and environmental factors in people's diverse lives which may have contributed to their positive dispositions towards change in relation to technology enhanced learning. We expect that such narrative approaches could serve to support colleagues in other institutions to warm up to ever-changing technological advances.

Benefits of Online, Face-to-Face Professional Development Similar, Study Finds | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Researchers found similar effects on student learning and teacher behavior regardless of whether teachers took part in online or face-to-face professional development.

Fishman said that administrators and policymakers should see the findings as further evidence that online teacher professional development, while no silver bullet, can be a viable alternative to the traditional model.

"There's some hesitation on the part of teachers who think that online [professional development] is somehow less valuable to them because of a lack of personal connection," Fishman said.
