The difference between social learning and social collaboration | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In my framework of Modern Workplace Learning (see diagram on right)  I use the term social collaboration to label an important new element of work of the modern-day L&D department. I deliberately chose not to label it social learning. So what is the difference – or rather connection – between these two terms?

The Advantages of Knowledge Sharing

The Advantages of Knowledge Sharing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
What about all of the knowledge and information acquired by an organization and its employees in the normal course of business? Should this information be shared?

Via Ana Cristina Pratas, Gust MEES
Gust MEES's insight:

The best part about this is that people are sharing their knowledge and ideas without expecting any immediate return on their investment of time and resources. Instead, there is a sort of unwritten rule to “pay it forward” because someday soon you will be the one needing advice.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, March 12, 2013 11:00 AM

Organizations, especially before the turn of the century, had a very similar approach to sharing.

Organizations kept what was perceived as “theirs” under tight lockdown and discouraged sharing outside of the organization unless there was an advantage to it. In many ways, this is understandable. Organizations have every right to protect trade secrets and should continue to do so.

But what about all of the knowledge and information acquired by an organization and its employees in the normal course of business… knowledge of things like best practices, process improvements, and employee retention strategies? Why can’t this information be shared with others in the industry, or even outside of it?

This article addresses the advantages of knowledge sharing online, particularly the power of social media and an online business model. By sharing our online knowledge and working together, we achieve the highest amount of growth and customer satisfaction. As the author explains, "We can ask questions of our Twitter followers and LinkedIn groups, or we can search blog posts and white papers for what we need and adapt it to our own projects, saving time and money in the process".

Arithmetic and higher math skills are embedded in school goals, but not necessarily persistence and grit. As a result, an "either/or" dynamic has been established that prioritizes academic skills, at the expense of "social and emotional" learning.

Sociology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sociology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Sociology is the scientific study of human society[1] and its origins, development, organizations, and institutions.[2] It is a social science which uses various methods of empirical investigation[3] and critical analysis[4] to develop a body of knowledge about human social activity, structures, and functions.

A goal for many sociologists is to conduct research which may be applied directly to social policy and welfare, while others focus primarily on refining the theoretical understanding of social processes. Subject matter ranges from the micro level of individual agency and interaction to the macro level of systems and thesocial structure.[5]

Education is about the free exchange of ideas. The exchange part is where the sharing comes in. Without sharing, there is no exchange.

At one time content was a commodity that was doled out for a price by institutions that housed the texts that contained the content. That is no longer the case. A combination of content on the Internet as well as the advance of social media and it is a whole new paradigm.

Curation: How to Find New Competitive Knowledge in Social Media

Curation: How to Find New Competitive Knowledge in Social Media | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Buzz used to be an intangible — something you just felt. No longer.

===> Look for online "curators." Experts who collect and share "best of" resources on specific subjects are analogous to museum curators who carefully choose which pieces to display. <===

In social media, curators do a good job of keeping track of people's conversations as they occur in online social spaces and quickly channeling that information, in some cases using tools such as Storify to distill conversations.

For example, the World Economic Forum in Davos uses Storify to put together summaries of its events. Canadian financial cooperative Desjardins wanted to learn about new electronic currencies, so it tracked a UK community dedicated to crowdfunding and sought experts in Africa on mobile-payment practices. The company prefers such information-gathering methods to relying on market-research firms.

===> If you can find the right set of curators to follow, you can reduce your reliance on searches of traditional databases and publications. <===

Our reputation, our value within social learning spaces, is based upon our ability to do more than just churn information. We need to be able to find things out, but we need to be able to do things with that information, and we need to be able to change our stance and style according to the situation.

It’s about the storytelling, not just the facts

Aleshia Clarke's curator insight, June 13, 2013 10:22 AM

My sister refuses to use social media, but she allows my niece to use it unsupervised. Not only is that dangerous, but it is also a lost opportunity to interact within her daughter's social life. This is particularly important to a single mom who works overtime to make ends meet. It doesn't require a huge time commitment; just having a "presence" on Facebook would be sufficient. I feel that my niece is not getting "enough" of her mother. Perhaps she would be less prone to create online drama if my sister was there listening in and guiding her.

A school in the cloud: Sugata Mitra accepted the TED Prize at TED2013

A school in the cloud: Sugata Mitra accepted the TED Prize at TED2013 | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Sugata Mitra is named the TED Prize winner at TED2013. He shares his wish—for a school in the cloud that encourages self-learning.

Mitra has a history of research to back up this wish. In 1999, he began what he calls his “hole in the wall” experiment. He carved a hole in a wall in a Delhi slum — about three feet high — and placed a computer in it. Kids had gathered around within a matter of hours and asked Mitra questions about what this thing was. He responded “I don’t know,” and walked away.

===> Soon the kids were surfing the internet — and teaching each other how to do it more effectively. <===

Mitra repeated the experiment 300 miles away, where computers even less familiar. He installed a mysterious computer on the side of a road. A few months later, he returned and found kids playing games on it.

Remembers Mitra, “They said, ‘We want a faster processor and a better mouse.’”

Another thing these kids said that was music to his ears:

“You’ve given us a machine that works only in English, so we had to teach ourselves English.”

Mitra says, “It was the first time I heard the words ===> ‘teach ourselves’ <===  said so casually.”

Gust MEES's insight:

That's ... and merits all RESPECT!!! Hat down for that!
