Microsoft says AI and machine learning driven by open source and the cloud Artificial intelligence and machine learning are rapidly gaining importance, and Mark Russinovich, Microsoft Azure chief technology officer, believes it's because of open-source software and the cloud.
Yes, Microsoft just announced that the next major edition of Windows 10 will support artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). But, marketing hype aside, Microsoft knows darn well that the real heavy lifting for AI and ML happens on the cloud with open-source software. That was the message Mark Russinovich, Microsoft's Azure CTO, brought to The Linux Foundation's Open Source Leadership Summit (OSLS) in Sonoma, CA.
Russinovich opened by saying:
AI technologies and techniques are experiencing a renaissance. Open-source technologies and communities have fostered the growth of self-taught machine learning developers with libraries and frameworks. The computing power of the cloud has made the processing of large data sets cost effective and commonplace. As more research continues to be done and shared throughout the communities we will continue to see more intelligent apps driving even greater adoption of open-source technologies across all processing platforms.
Specifically, he mentioned two examples where Microsoft is using the cloud and open source to help provide solutions with customers. The first is with Rolls-Royce aircraft engines which use ML to track their wear and tear. This data is then used with AI to proactively maintain the engines.

Microsoft is out to prove blockchain naysayers wrong. In an effort to show the potential of the technology beyond its applications in cryptocurrency, the Redmond giant has announced plans to use blockchain tech as the foundation for storing and processing digital identity data.
Following a collaboration with the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), Microsoft has revealed its plans to rely on blockchain technology to solve some of the challenges we face when managing our identities and personal data digitally, such as improving privacy and security across the physical and digital world.
“We believe it is essential for individuals to own and control all elements of their digital identity,” the company said in a blog post. “Rather than grant broad consent to countless apps and services, and have their identity data spread across numerous providers, individuals need a secure, encrypted digital hub where they can store their identity data and easily control access to it.”
To this end, the company is developing an off-chain solution – akin to the Lightning Network – that will allow it to process massive volumes of ID data without congesting the blockchain network.
The Microsoft UK Blog for schools, featuring news for schools from Microsoft, case studies within education, and education ICT advice
In fact, a recent study from Fordham University shows that schools are struggling to meet even existing legal and regulatory requirements related to the protection of student data.
Additionally, a recent survey of parents conducted by Benenson Strategy Group on behalf ofCommon Sense Media found that 90 percent of respondents were “concerned about how private companies with non-educational interests are able to access and use students’ personal information” and 77 percent support making it “illegal for schools and education technology companies to sell students’ private information to advertisers.”
So, as we gather together this week, we must ask: How do we protect the most vulnerable among us – our children – and guarantee their privacy and security in the ever-changing world of education today?

Adobe and Microsoft each issued security updates today to fix critical vulnerabilities in their software. Adobe’s fixes include a patch for a Flash Player flaw that is actively being exploited to break into Windows computers. Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday release includes nine patch bundles — more than half of them rated critical — addressing at least 27 security holes in Windows and related software. Nevertheless, the underlying vulnerability being targeted exists in Windows, Mac and Linux versions of the software. Windows and Mac users can grab the latest version (v. 11.3.300.271) via the Flash Player download center. Be sure to uncheck the “free” software scans that Adobe loves to bundle with updates, such as McAfee‘s obnoxious Security Scan Plus, if you don’t want it. Linux users should update to v. 11.2.202.238, and Chrome users want to be at v. 11.3.330.270 (normally Chrome auto-updates Flash, but recently it’s been sluggish to do so: my Chrome installation is still at v. 11.3.31.225. I will update this post in a bit with the direct links to the Flash Player downloads. Read more, a MUST for any "OS": http://krebsonsecurity.com/2012/08/critical-security-fixes-from-adobe-microsoft/

Microsoft has unveiled its latest research project today, Project Zanzibar. It’s a smart mat that’s designed to blend the digital and physical worlds by sensing touch, gestures, and objects. A team of researchers, with a love of toys, created the project at Microsoft’s research labs in the UK. The mat folds and combines sensing, near field communication (NFC), and multi-touch to imagine a future where you could place objects on this smart mat and play games.
Microsoft’s video (above) demonstrates a number of different games that track the position, movement, and orientation of objects — all thanks to NFC stickers. The smart mat, that reminds me of the Surface Music Cover, can even detect inputs like button presses, and works with existing devices via Bluetooth. While the software maker demonstrates basic games for learning, programming, and augmented reality, this looks like the perfect hardware to combine the company’s Minecraft game with real-world Lego blocks. Objects can be easily tagged with NFC stickers, so you could stack them and have the mat translate that physical object into Minecraft. If you want to build your own gadgets using the Raspberry Pi but don't have the kit or even a Pi, there could soon be another way to get started.
Microsoft is building an online Raspberry Pi simulator that allows users to write code to control emulated hardware, and that currently lets users interact with an LED and collect data from a sensor.
The simulator shows a graphic of a Pi wired to a combined humidity, temperature, pressure sensor and a red LED via a breadboard, a plug board that allows circuits to be wired together rapidly. Users can type in a side panel to enter Node.js JavaScript code, which can be used to control the LED and collect dummy data from the simulated sensor. That code can be executed using a command line at the base of the panel. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: http://www.scoop.it/t/21st-century-learning-and-teaching/?&tag=Raspberry+Pi

Young people and children may know how to operate devices but are not necessarily prepared to think digitally. The idea that the new generations are all “digital natives” is a fallacy. Interestingly, the school is now considered as THE place that should undertake the mission to prepare them for the challenges of the digital-by-default society in which they will live. But schools are not ready yet. For example, when one of my daughters recently started secondary school she was immersed in a new pedagogic model that is based on the use of a handheld device instead of books. The model came from a partnership with the industry and counted with the support of the school principal. Although I welcomed the initiative, I soon noticed a mix of new and old ways of teaching that weakened its effectiveness. The intention was great but it was not accompanied by an adequate preparation of teachers to act as learning facilitators. This is one of the major challenges for schools, in my view. When we think of young people today we also deal with another contradiction. Many of them are unemployed; with some regions in Europe where as far as one out of two youths are unemployed. But at the same time, digital skills are increasingly demanded by the labour market (there will be about 825,000 ICT vacancies in EU by 2020). We tend to think that young people automatically have these skills. But they don’t. Therefore, digital literacy is becoming as important as traditional literacy and numeracy. Digital literacy is not only about the ability to use office or social media tools. It also implies understanding the logic behind it- what some call “computational thinking”- and this can be acquired, for example, by coding. Another problem, as pointed out by many experts, is the lack of students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and this will only make the skills gap deeper. STEM studies are apparently not fashionable. So we need to make them more appealing, for example, by adding topics such as Arts or Creativity to stimulate interest and innovation in these fields. We can also work on better aligning university career plans to the labour market demands and expectations.

Microsoft Research today launched Code Hunt, a browser-based game for anyone interested in learning how to code by playing. The premise is straightforward:
Learning to code can be made more effective and sustainable if it is perceived as fun by the learner. Code Hunt uses puzzles that players have to explore by means of clues presented as test cases. Players iteratively modify their code to match the functional behaviour of secret solutions.
Patch Tuesday has been and gone, which means that if you're responsible for the security of the computers in your office - or the ones you use at home - it's time to update your systems once again.

Where Europe succeeds, we succeed Europe matters to us. For the past thirty years, it’s been our aim to help fuel the European economy... The Web has prompted tremendous growth and innovation over the last two decades, but also a new set of challenges. Cybersecurity has emerged as a significant global threat. Every day more than a million people are successfully targeted by cyber criminals. ===> That’s a new victim every 14 seconds. <=== Malicious attacks are mushrooming and conservative estimates put the annual cost of cybercrime at $114 billion. Given this, it’s hardly surprising that the World Economic Forum’s Risk Response Network recently elevated cybersecurity to a top five global risk, alongside issues such as income inequality, rising greenhouse gas emissions and fiscal imbalances. Gust MEES: in the word ICT = "I", meaning "Information", so this is necessary in Education especially! IT-Security in 21st Century is a need to get included in curriculum, it's the responsibility of Education to teach IT-Security and Internet-Safety... By knowing that every 14 seconds there is a new victim to cybercriminals I hope that educators and teachers will see the importance of preparing best their learners to be best protected, even if they need to learn themselves about it, we are ALL "Life Long Learners" ;) Read more: http://www.microsoft.eu/digital-policy/posts/tackling-cybersecurity-together.aspx
