Facebook: Your profile data has probably been scraped | #BigData #SocialMedia #Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Our Facebook privacy nightmare somehow keeps getting worse.

The vast majority of Facebook users have likely had their public profile data scraped by third-parties, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed Wednesday.

SEE ALSO: Deleting Facebook won't fix our privacy nightmare

The seemingly massive privacy loophole was the result of a feature that allowed people to search for friends using their phone number. The setting, which has now been removed, was enabled by default in order to make it easier for users' to find friends.

But on Wednesday, Facebook's chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer revealed that bad actors have been abusing the feature for years in order to gain access to public profile data. "Given the scale and sophistication of the activity we’ve seen, we believe most people on Facebook could have had their public profile scraped in this way," he wrote.

Later, during a call with reporters, Zuckerberg confirmed that a large percentage of Facebook users have likely had their data scraped since the setting was enabled by default.

Google Maps now lets you revisit your location history in a detailed timeline | DigitalFootPrint | DigitalCitiZEN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

It’s inspiring — in a crazy sort of way — to consider how efficient Google can be in keeping track of information about you. Today, Google announced the launch of “Your Timeline,” a tool in Google Maps that shares with you all the places you have been. It works if you chose to store your Location History with Google.

Product manager Gerard Sanz detailed the feature in blog post, as the company gradually rolls out the timeline for Maps users.

It could definitely serve as a convenience. What with our busy lives, sometimes it’s hard to remember all the stops along the way. Google sees Your Timeline as a way to quickly recall, and even view your past whereabouts.

Privacy group files FTC complaint over Facebook's 'emotional contagion' study | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

EPIC contends that Facebook 'purposefully messed with people's minds' when it manipulated their news feeds to measure emotional responses.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed the complaint Thursday, asking the FTC to impose sanctions on Facebook. The study violated terms of a 20-year consent decree that requires the social-networking company must protect its users’ privacy, EPIC said. EPIC also wants Facebook to be forced to disclose the algorithms it uses to determine what appears in users’ news feeds.

Spyware app turns the privacy tables on Google Glass wearers

Spyware app turns the privacy tables on Google Glass wearers | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Critics of Google Glass usually remark on how the device allows its owner to take photos and videos of other people without their knowledge or consent, which has contributed to some backlash, including bans on Glass in some establishments and an alleged assault on a Glass user.

.

But a spyware app developed by two researchers has shown that Google Glass can be used to secretly take photos of whatever a Glass wearer is looking at without their knowledge - making the Glass user the one whose privacy and security is potentially compromised.

.

The lens display usually lights up whenever Glass is in use, which is the only way to tell when Glass is on - other than witnessing voice and gesture commands used by the wearer such as "Okay Glass, take a photo."

.

However, according to media reports, the app takes a photo every 10 seconds when the display is off, meaning the wearer (or anyone in view of the camera) is unaware that it's recording.

Gust MEES's insight:

Facebook sued for allegedly scanning your private messages

A class-action suit claims that the social networking site monitors and uses your messages for advertising purposes.
