A math teacher illustrates some ways in which creative ones do but it’s really about imagination, not just getting the figures rightMARCH 3, 2022
Math teacher Ali Kayaspor has thought a lot about how mathematicians have come up with fundamental ideas about the nature of reality and he shares anecdotes that give us a glimpse. But first, the cold shower:
Unfortunately, there is no clear way to answer the question of how a mathematician thinks. But we can approach this question as follows; if you watched any chess tournament, the game’s analysis is shared in detail at the end of the match. When you examine the analysis, you will see a breaking point in each game. Similarly, mathematicians also experience a breaking point while working on a problem before finding a solution.
ALI KAYASPOR, “HOW DOES A MATHEMATICIAN’S BRAIN DIFFER FROM OTHER BRAINS?” AT MEDIUM (SEPTEMBER 1, 2021)
Sometimes, perhaps, they hardly notice the breaking point. Consider this anecdote from the life of Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855):
When the children in an elementary school were very naughty, the teacher wrote a difficult question on the chalkboard to silence all the children. The teacher asked the children to add up all the numbers from 1 to 100.
On that day, the young German boy named Gauss, who would grow up to be one of the greatest mathematicians of the future, was in that class. While the teacher thought it would take a long time for the children to solve the question, Gauss resumed talking to his friends again in just a few minutes. When Gauss’s teacher asked why he was talking, he said he had already solved the question. That day, all the students in that class tried to add all the numbers one by one, but Gauss did something unusual. He saw that he would always get 101 if he added a number from the left of the sequence and a number from the right. For example, 1+100, 2+99, 3+98,…, 50+51; it was always 101, and there were 50 of them.
If we look carefully at this method, we will see that this is an observation that even a small child can see. However, it is a fact that not all young children solve this question like that.
ALI KAYASPOR, “HOW DOES A MATHEMATICIAN’S BRAIN DIFFER FROM OTHER BRAINS?” AT MEDIUM (SEPTEMBER 1, 2021)
It involves creative abstract thinking at a level unusual in a child. We are told that “He went on to publish seminal works in many fields of mathematics including number theory, algebra, statistics, analysis, differential geometry, geodesy, geophysics, electrostatics, astronomy, optics, etc. Number theory was Gauss’s favorite and he referred to number theory as the ‘queen of mathematics.’” – “Gauss: The Prince of Mathematics”
Surprisingly, great mathematicians are not always good with conventional basic math. Take Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887–1920), one of India’s greatest mathematical geniuses:
Despite solving infinite sums, he could not understand the most basic analysis technique. Ramanujan did not have the slightest idea of complex analysis, but he could work on zeta functions. So Ramanujan had a different mindset in his mind that only he knew, and one we will never understand.
One day, when [his friend and fellow mathematician G. H.] Hardy wondered about this situation and asked how he wrote all those formulas, Ramanujan told him that God gave him all the formulas, and he had just written them. To me, this was a very reasonable answer because Ramanujan was a math practitioner 24/7, and he often forgot to eat. His wife or mother reminded him that Ramanujan had to eat. The few times he did sleep, he continued doing math in his dreams.
A number of anecdotes capture Ramanujan’s affinity for pure mathematics. His health was fragile and during a bout of illness, he surprised even his friend and mentor Hardy:
Eventually Ramanujan was confined to a nursing home to await his return to India. Hardy paid frequent visits to his friend and colleague. Not surprisingly, the conversation usually turned to mathematics. On one such visit, 1,729 cropped up. This was the number of the taxi cab Hardy had taken to the clinic, and as befits two number theorists they discussed its significance. Hardy thought 1,729 to be a boring run-of-the-mill number, but Ramanujan disagreed. “That is a really, really interesting number,” he declared. How so? “It is the smallest number that can be expressed as the sum of two cubes in two different ways!”
Ramanujan could see immediately that: 123 + 13 = 103 + 93 = 1,729.
This amusing anecdote came to symbolise Ramanujan’s humble genius, and numbers that can be expressed as the sum of two cubes in two separate ways are known as “taxi numbers” in recognition. Other taxi numbers are 4,014, 13,832 and 20,638. But 1,729 is the smallest.
PAUL DAVIES, “RAMANUJAN – A HUMBLE MATHS GENIUS” AT COSMOS MAGAZINE (DECEMBER 28, 2015)
And no one really knows how he did it.
Perhaps it requires a lot of imagination. Mathematics is full of unusual numbers. Consider, for example, the irrationals that burble on forever without forming a pattern (though some, like the Golden Ratio and pi, are critical). They are more numerous than rational numbers which eventually start to make sense.
But also, there are the imaginary numbers (they don’t make sense according to our number system but of course our computers and the entire modern world depend on them).
And the hyperreals: “Thinking about infinities is somewhat mind-bending, but it turns out that actually manipulating infinities with the hyperreal system is incredibly easy if you are familiar with basic algebra.”
Then there’s 1/137, which keeps turning up in physics and no one is sure why: “What’s special about alpha is that it’s regarded as the best example of a pure number, one that doesn’t need units. It actually combines three of nature’s fundamental constants – the speed of light, the electric charge carried by one electron, and the Planck’s constant, as explains physicist and astrobiologist Paul Davies to Cosmos magazine. Appearing at the intersection of such key areas of physics as relativity, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics is what gives 1/137 its allure.”
And Chaitin’s unknowable number, which is critical to computer function: “The number exists. If you write programs in C++, Python, or Matlab, your computer language has a Chaitin number. It’s a feature of your computer programming language. But we can prove that even though Chaitin’s number exists, we can also prove it is unknowable.”
One needs a lot of imagination combined with a lot of numerical discipline to keep track of it all. And that’s as far as we have got in understanding the way creative mathematicians think.
You may also wish to read: Why the unknowable number exists but is uncomputable. Sensing that a computer program is “elegant” requires discernment. Proving mathematically that it is elegant is, Chaitin shows, impossible. Gregory Chaitin walks readers through his proof of unknowability, which is based on the Law of Non-Contradiction.
The article does a great job describing the various successful mathematicians, but it shows that all skills are capable of finding success in math. There is not an innate math person, so all students can find success in math.

Changes in the ecology and life history of animals due to global environmental change are no longer a theoretical concept but a reality. Well-documented examples of these responses to climate change include range shifts, changes in phenology, body size, and, in some cases, extinction. These, though, are unlikely to be the only impacts of climate change. Any aspect of an organism’s biology that is linked to its capacity to adapt to the abiotic environment is likely to be influenced by environmental change. Here we highlight the increasing but underappreciated evidence indicating that climate change is affecting the world’s fauna through changes in appendage size.
The increased temperatures associated with climate change are likely to influence, among other things, the thermoregulatory demands placed on animals. Failure to maintain body temperature within critical limits can lead to loss of physiological functions and death. Two of the most commonly discussed thermoregulatory methods animals employ are evaporative heat loss and dry heat exchange, and both are predicted to be influenced by climatic warming. While evaporative heat loss is intricately tied to water budgets and dehydration risk, dry heat exchange is strongly related to energy budgets and morphology. An animal’s ability to effectively dissipate heat via dry heat exchange can affect its energy expenditure and thus activity, as formalised by the heat dissipation limit theory. This theory emphasises the importance of heat release, rather than just the input of required resources, for energy expenditure.
The ecophysiological significance of heat exchange becomes more apparent when looking at global trends of body size and shape, as formalised by two biogeographical rules: Bergmann’s and Allen’s rules. These focus on gradients in body size and appendage size, respectively. Bergmann’s rule states that higher latitudes correlate with larger body sizes: In the cooler climates found at higher latitudes, the reduced body surface area/volume ratio of larger bodies enables animals to retain heat more effectively. Allen’s rule focuses on the size of body appendages such as tails, beaks, and legs rather than whole-body size, but it argues on a similar basis that larger appendages relative to body size provide more surface area from which to effectively dissipate body heat. Therefore, larger appendages may be advantageous in warm climates but disadvantageous in cooler climates. While both rules were formalised with endotherms in focus, there is evidence that some ectotherms also adhere to these rules (see the supplemental information online).
Both rules have widespread support across various animal taxa (birds, insects [21., 22.], amphibians and mammals."

French recently became third official language in region
A 25-year-old Rwandan girl, Silvia Uwimana, was stranded at the main taxi park in Uganda’s capital Kampala last June after losing her way to a relative’s home.
She came from Rwanda to visit her uncle who works in Uganda and lives in a suburb of the capital.
Unfortunately, Uwimana failed to get anyone to show her the way to her uncle’s house due to a language barrier. She could only speak her native Rwandan language and French, which is her country’s official language.
“Whoever I tried to talk to could not understand what I was saying. They could not comprehend my local language or French,” she told Anadolu Agency.
She was lucky that after walking for more than four hours she met a girl who knew French. She showed her the way to her uncle’s house.
After staying with her uncle for two weeks she decided to learn English at an adult learners’ institute so she could fit into the Ugandan community. Now she is fluent in English and French.
Many Ugandans, and those in other East African countries where English is the official language, are learning French so that they can easily fit into all the countries.
Among East African countries, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan have English as their first official language. Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is soon joining the community, are French-speaking countries.
But recently French was made the third official language in the East African Community. The others are English and Swahili.
A French language expert and lecturer at Kabale government University, Morris Keitaba, said many educated Ugandans are learning French. He said it is not only in Uganda but in Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan.
“It is good for Ugandans and people in Kenya, South Sudan and Tanzania to learn French,” he told Anadolu Agency. “It is good for citizens of a country to speak different international languages. Learning French makes them able to get jobs in the French speaking countries.”
He said at Kabale University, students and staff have registered with the French language faculty to study French. Those who are not taking French as a major subject has registered for short courses to learn the language.
“The French Embassy supports us to teach French through Alliance Francaise Uganda. It facilitates some of our activities and also offers French language learning scholarships to teachers and students,” he said.
- Learning French appreciated, supported
The president of the French Teachers Association in Uganda, Agathe Tumwine, said over time, Ugandans have come to know the importance of studying French.
"We want Ugandans to know the importance of being able to communicate in many international languages. The future of French learning in Uganda and East Africa at large is bright. Many people are getting to know about it,” she said.
Tumwine said during last year’s ordinary level national final examinations, 270 schools sat for French examinations, which is encouraging.
She said French and English can coexist in Uganda and all other East African countries. “And mind you, French is spoken on five continents,” she said.
The French Embassy in Uganda recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Bonjour Kampala, the first francophone web radio station in the country, to promote French using new technology.
It also supports universities where French is offered, including Makerere University, Makerere Business School, Kyambogo University and Kabale University.
According to Uganda’s Minister for East African Affairs Rebecca Kadaga, the Council of East African Ministers know the importance of learning French and that is the reason they recently endorsed the language as the third official language in East African Community countries.
”We passed a resolution during our last meeting that French becomes the third official language. We passed it after getting assured that the Democratic Republic of Congo had been accepted to join the East African Community,” said Tumwine.
She said the Democratic Republic of Congo is very big and very rich and therefore there is a need for Ugandans, Kenyans, South Sudanese and Tanzanians to learn French so that they can go there and easily communicate with people as they do business or look for jobs.
A Tanzanian student on a study visa in Uganda, Michael Morobom, said that in his country, learning French is being taken seriously by students and others with the hope of finding opportunities in French-speaking countries.
The head of Alliance Francaise in Uganda, Magaly Losange, said: “The fact that East African Community decided to adopt French as the third official language will only give Ugandans reasons to embrace it.”
