3 Places To Travel If You Love The Outdoors

3 Places To Travel If You Love The Outdoors | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Forbes has a nice travel article highlighting 3 places to travel to if you love the outdoors, and Cayo is 1st on their list.  They loved the beauty and nature found here, while enjoying their stay at Caves Branch Jungle Lodge.  Definitely worth a read.

We are starting our list in Central America, in the (criminally underrated) and devastatingly lush country of Belize. With its vivid combination of dense jungle and the Caribbean Sea, the wild beauty of Belize is reminiscent of Tulum ten years ago—before the influencers, and the pervasive house music, before it became one of the most well-known bohemian getaways on the planet.

In Belize, there is still much left to be discovered. While much has been made of Ambergris Caye as of late, and the diving opportunities off the coast at the Great Blue Hole to be particular, the Cayo district remains blissfully undiscovered to many would-be visitors.

The country only measures 170 miles from north to south, an incredible fact considering the diversity of its ecosystems. And even the highways in Belize are gorgeous: Hummingbird Highway, in particular, is known as one of the most beautiful streets in the world. Which is all the better to appreciate the glory of your natural surroundings, of course. We told you Belize was underrated."

Beer Diaries in Belize - Aurelio Martinez and The Garifuna

The Beer Diaries did an episode about Belize, and Aurelio Martinez is in a lot of it.  Well worth a watch for the stories from Aurelio.

"In this episode, host Mike Mann and his team explore Garifuna culture and how its people came to the Belize region.  Unexpected weather pushes the team indoors where they meet famed musician, Aurelio Martinez, who joins the team on their road trip down the Hummingbird Highway.  During this time, Mike and his team experience a full immersion of Aurelio’s music, stories and passionate views.  By the end, an unanticipated Aurelio Martinez concert happens, coupled with witnessing the songwriting talents of Martinez, while recording a new album when his back is to the wall."

A Magical World at MPR

A Magical World at MPR | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Mountain Pine Ridge might be the second focus of this article about Blancaneaux Lodge, but you must admit, MPR is magical.

"As Hummingbird Highway carves away from Belize's resort-laden sands, pavement dissolves into rutted dirt tracks and the dense jungle canopy starts to press in from all sides.  The tallest buildings pushing through the foliage are Maya ruins, and howler monkeys and macaws lurk in the ceiba trees.  Late at night, distant thunderstorms ring the horizon, broad sheets of lightning illuminating the mountains."

The Hummingbird Highway In Belize

The Hummingbird Highway In Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cool little article about the Hummingbird Highway, and what one sees while travelling on it.  One of the most scenic drives in the world.

"Belize's Hummingbird Highway is widely considered one of the most scenic drives in the world. Gary Peterson accompanies you along this stunning stretch of road from Belmopan to Dangriga...

You pass through many small villages, and it seems like every home has either a Coke or Belikin Beer sign advertising cold drinks and hot barbecued food.Along the way you pass local families on the side of the road, selling coconut water, corn,  and fruits."

Cayo has the caves!  Waterfall cave, located off the Hummingbird Highway, has a series of cascades in it that you can climb up.  It's guaranteed to be an incredible day of exploring fun.

"Along the Hummingbird Highway, near the Blue Hole, is the Waterfall Cave.  After a 20 minute hike to the entrance of the cave, you hike 3 kilometers into the cave, climbing up 7 waterfalls and cascades.  You then backtrack, jumping into the pools, and enjoying an amazing lunch along the way.  Contact Ian Anderson's Caves Branch for more information."
