Contagious: Why Some Things Go VIRAL Jonah Berger [video]

We all know ideas and information spread through word of mouth. But according to Berger, the key to making things really popular happens long before it's dis...

Marty Note
What is the "science" behind social transmission? Only 7% of SHARES comes online. Vast majority of Word-of-Mouth happens face-to-face. Why do things get talked about and shared?

Half of what is in Tipping Point is WRONG. Focus so much on special people we ignore what is really important - the message. Need to understand the psychology of sharing.

Social Currency
Shares story of Please Don't Tell, the secret bar in NYC. http://pdtnyc.com/ Social currency effects how people see us. We like to share things that make us look smart and in the know.

Triggers
Why is Rebecca Black's video viral? over 300M views? Why? Triggers are stimulus that make us think about something else. Triggers make products, ideas or memes "Top of Mind".  Black, by calling her song Friday, linked to a trigger.

Disneyland gets out viraled by Cheerios because we eat breakfast daily but only go to Disneyland every now and again. Corona has made the beach a trigger.

Coffee with Kit Kat messaging created a great trigger because you drink more coffee than you eat chocolate. By linking Kit Kat to coffee the trigger (coffee) makes people think about having chocolate.

Trojan Horses
All stories have a "surprise inside" like Will It Blend. A story or message that carries the brand for the ride.

Three Content Marketing Ninjas Reveal Their Secrets!

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

My friend @MarkTraphagen reminded me of this fun SEO Meetup hosted by my friend Phil Buckley (@1918) featuring another friend Amy Lewis (@CommsNinja). The discussion is the changing nature of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how content truly and finally is KING.

Content being KING has many implications ranging from a need for new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to shifting tactics and strategy away from the old optimization days and toward a new world where storytelling is the new SEO.

My Storytelling is the new SEO presentaion is on Slideshare

(now with over 16,000 views and all views started from this SEO Meetup and the new nature of content, storytelling and SEO. Thanks to Mark for reminding me of how spcial this meeting was :).

Wow, what a great idea. Was up late last night comparing game developer tips to ecommere on Magento Ecommerce Revolution ( please be kind it was a very late night LOL http://www.scoop.it/t/magento-ecommerce/p/2212217403/games-and-ecommerce-collide-applying-5-video-game-design-tips-to-ecomm ) and this article about using QR codes to help tell stories adds depth to my thoughts from last night. QR codes create the ultimate Easter Egg Hunt if we are smart enough to build the hunt in.

Stories - Why So Important NOW

Stories - Why So Important NOW | BI Revolution | Scoop.it

Stories Matter
It is easy to find content about how HOT stories and storytelling have become. I included links to my favorite storytelling coach and Scoop.it mentor Karen Dietz (@Kdietz) in the piece.

The post also explores the trickiest part of storytelling. Marketers, a group of type A communicators, must tell stories with intent now. The real intent is to create the trust needed to have a conversation.

You see the rub. We tell stories to share our vulnerability and the LISTEN and CURATE the stories of others. Stepping back takes courage, discipline and storytelling’s so sure of their cause and abilities they have nothing to prove

Marty's Content Curation Secret: Women's Magazines

Marty's Content Curation Secret: Women's Magazines | BI Revolution | Scoop.it
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I have a secret. I learned how to curate content, at least partially, from women's magazines. You remember those colorful monthly blasts of perfume samples and 8 Ways To Shock Your Lover?

Idea starved we would hit Barnes and Noble and pick up $100 in Elle, Redbook, Vogue and Cosmo. Women's publications know how to SINK a hook such as these recent hooks from Allure:

* 31 Party Hairstyles (note seasonality).

* 10 Sexiest Fragrances Right Now.

* 12 Beauty Gifts Under $50.

* 3 Beauty Tips To Survive Hangovers.

This piece got WAY too long for Scoop.it. I moved it over to Atlantic BT's Blog:
