Clean Tech: USA vs. China

Clean Tech: USA vs. China | CleanTech | Scoop.it
China is clearly a clean-tech force to be reckoned with. It installed more wind power, manufactured more solar PV and solar hot water heaters, and spent more money overall on clean-energy investments than any other nation in 2010.

The World's Most Amazing Wind Farms

The World's Most Amazing Wind Farms | CleanTech | Scoop.it
Wind farm development is playing a huge role in a clean energy future. While mass wind power may offer a beneficial energy alternative, the construction of wind farms creates a great deal of controversy – from the destruction of natural habitats and dangers to birds and bats to the actual effectiveness of wind as an energy source. Some even argue that wind farms are ugly, disrupting the scenic coastlines and natural beauty of the world. Take a look at these wind farm pictures and let us know your thoughts – ugly or simply amazing?

Can the Keynes notion of ‘spontaneous optimism’ help U.S. investments in clean energy?

Can the Keynes notion of ‘spontaneous optimism’ help U.S. investments in clean energy? | CleanTech | Scoop.it
John Maynard Keynes, a giant in modern economic theory, pushed back on the notion that people behave in an purely economically rational manner. Can it help U.S. investments in clean energy?

While the rest of the world is getting dressed up for the clean energy party, it looks like the U.S. is going to stay home. In the clean energy world, countries like Germany and China are the real party animals, while the U.S. runs the risk of becoming increasingly confused and dispirited. By James Barrett

Global Clean Technology Venture Investment Rises in 1Q 2011 | CleanTech | Scoop.it
Measured by dollars invested, cleantech venture investment was up by 52 percent compared to the previous quarter ($1.69 billion) and was also 31 percent higher than the same period a year ago ($2.28 billion). Conversely, the number of deals recorded in 1Q11 was 159, a total which is likely to be the lowest quarterly count since mid 2009, though this tally may rise once all investors have completed reporting deals. Of these deals, 65% (104) were follow-on rounds, accounting for 93% ($2.39 billion) of all money invested during the quarter.

Liquid Solar Array collects sunlight while out in the sea

Liquid Solar Array collects sunlight while out in the sea | CleanTech | Scoop.it
Solar panels are a great way to generate electricity without causing any harm to the environment, but the problem with them is that they require a large area to contain a huge amount of solar panels in order to generate sufficient amounts of electricity. Tata Power, India; and Sunergy, Australia; have decided to work together to create a solution to the problem: a Liquid Solar Array. Making use of specially designed floating solar panels, the Liquid Solar Array will be a whole fleet of sunlight converting devices that will float off-shore India, transforming rays from the sun into useful electricity. Watch the video render of how the Liquid Solar Array would function.

The Story of Electronics (2010)

Explore the high-tech revolution's collateral damage—25 million tons of e-waste and counting, poisoned workers and a public left holding the bill. Host Annie Leonard takes viewers from the mines and factories where our gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green 'race to the top' where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable.
DylanStewart's comment March 11, 2011 2:16 PM
Great video -- thanks for sharing. It makes me think about Arthur C. Clarke's quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." By designing with this possibility in mind we can ultimately remove all of the hardware from our technology and therefore eliminate e-waste. The germ of this idea of magic is found on the iPhone and iPad; the keyboard has been removed and replaced with a digital version. The plastic keys have been replaced by digital "magic" and therefore no longer generate e-waste. It's a small example of what Arthur C. Clarke is describing, but it is the future of design. The sooner we embrace this possibility, the sooner we will eliminate the tons of electronics waste generated by our hardware.

Green meets Luruxy: Rolls-Royce Unveils Phantom 102EX, World's Most Luxurious Electric Car

Green meets Luruxy: Rolls-Royce Unveils Phantom 102EX, World's Most Luxurious Electric Car | CleanTech | Scoop.it
Looking for a luxury electric car, with utter disregard for the price? Rolls-Royce has got something for you: the Phantom 102EX, an electric version of the company’s top-of-the-line model.

The car is powered by the world’s largest electric car battery, weighing 640 kg (1,400 lbs) and has a range of 125 miles, which is not bad for a large limousine such as the Phantom. The batteries can be charged quickly — in about eight hours — but if you want to conserve battery life, you’ll need to take the slower route and leave the car charging for more than 20 hours.

Can a Country Get 90 Percent of Its Power From Renewables?

Can a Country Get 90 Percent of Its Power From Renewables? | CleanTech | Scoop.it
That would just be fantastic. Renewable energy is often intermittent and unreliable, but with the right storage technology, it can become a substitute for baseline power.

A paper that will soon come out from the National Solar Energy Center in Israel hypothesizes that the country — which now only gets a tiny fraction of its power from solar — could conceivably boost the total to 90 percent with things like vanadium-redox flow batteries and pumped hydro storage.
