Activity: Simulating a Connectivist Learning Environment In preparation for Extended Session for Learning2 Asia 2016 (October 6-8, 2016) Purpose The purpose of this activity is for the participants to have a shared experience which can then be used to provide illustrations and examples as w

Stephen has kindly taken time and responded to my rather pithy comments on his post from August 11th. Below I’m reproducing his responses to my initial comments – originally available here, with my comments in bold sans-serif beneath. Stephen I’ve actually spent quite a bit of time with Facebook, not just a user but also as a developer, working with …
What does it mean to be human in a digital age? Some people researching education technology might not spend their days wondering how their work fits into this existential question—but George Siemens isn’t "some people."“Maybe my mama hugged me extra when I was a baby.” That’s his explanation for ho
We spend so much time in education trying to make things better. Better policies. Better technology. Better standards. Better curriculum. Better instruction. Better assessment. Better response to assessment data. And too with [...]
In this presentation I outline the major elements of connectivism as a learning theory, show how this informed the development and design of our massive open o…
I recently came across this infographic on learning theory on the most excellent blog, TeachThought. As you can see, with the digital age, a new theory of learning has emerged called Connectivism. it is a theory advanced by George Siemens and Stephe
This new theory called connectivism allow us to know technologie is contributing and modifying some aspects of our learning process. We are all born with a special way to learn and the environment modifies, expands or influences the way we learn. Learning theories allows us to closely observe these different ways of learning, and how we fit into some of them or we are a little bit of each. Connectivism could be more related to the new generation that is born in the era of technology, but in fact its influence is also evident in the learning of all who have access to technology for whatever reason.
One of the greatest challenges we face in today’s rapidly changing, tech-saturated educational landscape is the decrease of physical classrooms based on traditional notions of localized, embodied community. Emerging online classrooms mirror digital, distributed mode
Nonlinguistic representations can facilitate deep learning of a concept. In the 2nd module of EdTech 543, I explored communities of practice, personal learning networks, and connectivism. These are related but different concepts. The graphic below represents a simplified view of how I learn from people and resources. I've tried to represent how personal learning networks…
One of the things that I mentioned in the wrap-up hang out for HumanMOOC is getting at how people understand educational theories and their own preferences for learning. This is connected to how ma…
While the first MOOCs were connectivist in their approach to learning, later versions have expanded to include instructivist structures and structures that blend both theories. From an instructional design standpoint the differences are important. This paper will examine how to analyze the goals of any proposed MOOC to determine what the epistemological focus should be. This will lead to a discussion of types of communication needed—based on analysis of power dynamics—to design accurately within the determined epistemology. The paper also explores later stages of design related to proper communication of the intended power structure or theoretical design as these relate to various activities and expectations in the MOOC.
Digital Pedagogy Lab : Prince Edward Island : Second Reflections Welcome address at Digital Pedagogy Lab : UPEI The recent pedagogy lab on Prince Edward Island was split into two tracks, Digital Literacies and Networks. My experience was mostly with the network track, focusing on the nature of digital networks and network-building. Although, with a…
