The New SEO - Who Loves Ya Baby? via Curagami

The New SEO - Who Loves Ya Baby? via Curagami | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

The New SEO

This Curagami post takes issue with the priority and emphasis of two "old world" SEO posts. When Jeff Bullas suggests, important tweaks could result in top rank he over reaches.

When Forbes worries about content length, they ask the wrong question in the wrong way. Here's a thought experiment to prove the point - does Oprah need to worry about technical SEO tweaks or content length?

Answer: No Oprah does not. When your tribe is as loyal, eager to consume and collaborate as Oprah's SEO is moot and adds little. Think Oprah achieved her position of trust and created such a loyal tribe by tweaking or manipulating content?

Neither do we. Do we miss the days when a tweak here or there meant rank? You bet. Life was easier then, but marketing is so much better now, and it will become better still.

The rub is Jeff and Forbes are right and wrong at the same time. Technically every tip Jeff shares is correct, but the emphasis is backward. Jeff starts with keywords. In this Curagami post we suggest starting with your story, your "why": http://www.curagami.com/seo-loves-ya-baby/

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

The problem with a Jeff Bullas and Forbes SEO post is they miss the point of the "new" SEO - to win hearts, minds, and loyalty with authenticity, stories, and collaboration. We suggest listening more and technically tweaking or worrying about content length less.

Building Links? Beware...

Building Links? Beware... | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

“Link building” as it is traditionally defined is fraught with risks, gray-hat techniques, and dangerous mistakes. Don’t approach link building in a let’s-build-some-links kind of way.

If you do, you’re headed for dangerous waters. Instead, consider link building as a byproduct of being a networker, a content marketer, a local expert, a personal brand, and a social animal.

 Read More: http://www.searchenginejournal.com/link-building-brand-new-website/115075/

Marty Note
When one of our friends shared his use of the disavow tool daily at a recent conference to our shocked and surprise. He went on to explain by alerting Google to spammy links coming into his content he was winning more and more SEO cred and suddenly we got it.

Acting proactively on the knowledge not all inbound links are equal or good can save some SEO PAIN.

Not all links are equal and some may be attempts to HURT your website. Knowing who is linking to you, thanking the good ones and alerting Google to your disdain for the bad ones is becoming an important "new SEO" tactic.

This post shares solid new ways to get good links in the first place and original great content is you best friend on that mission. What it doesn't share is the cost of bad unsolicited links. Treat all links with care and give them with even more care.

We suggest NOT letting the spider follow your links. No Follow links protect you from having the content changed or altered after you link. Even with No Follow Links ONLY link to trusted sources so you may become an authority too.

SEO Daily Rocks Future of SEO With Excellent Paper.li

SEO Daily Rocks Future of SEO With Excellent Paper.li | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

Future of SEO
Pay particular attention to the Future of SEO post in SEO Daily's excellent Paper.li because they have it just right. We riffed on this idea of THEMES and TOPICS not keywords yesterday on Curagami (http://www.curagami.com/ecommerce/future-of-shopping-ebay-r-j-pitman-and-motif-hardeep-walia/ ).

Keywords can't DESCRIBE ideas. Keywords don't understand context, idiom or snarkyness. The next web is about meaning, emotion and connection. This means spiders have to use whats at hand, context, to understand sentiment and meaning.

Think of owning TOPICS instead of keyword positions. Shift your thinking to the border between your ideas and theirs. In that border real "intellectual property" exists, can be mined and spun into gold. IF you think more broadly than WORDS and POSITION.

Overwhelmed? Enter #IMoverwhelmed Sweeps via @Curagami | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

OVERWHELMED
Overwhelmed Is the word we keep hearing from Small to Medium Sized business. They feel overwhelmed by Internet marketing's ever changing environment and accelerating demands. Yeah, we can help with that

Nothing so motivated as a sinner seeking redemption. We've been marketing online so long, more than 30years combined in team Curagami, we sometimes hear "overwhelmed" after we speak to customers.

As penance we are going to help one lucky company create a plan. See we know something about feeling overwhelmed. When I heard "cancer" and my name in the same sentence "overwhelmed" was the right word. I worked my way out by planning to ride a bicycle across America.

DON'T DO THAT (lol), but do enter our #IMoverwhelmed Sweeps and we guarantee you will begin to feel less overwhelmed NOW. Remember you are not alone and keep turning the crank :). Marty

7 SEO Common and Dangerous Misconceptions Put Right [+ @ScentTrail Notes]

7 SEO Common and Dangerous Misconceptions Put Right [+ @ScentTrail Notes] | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it
Here are 7 common misconceptions some have about search engine optimization.

Via malek
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Excellent Post, My Notes:

1. SEO is about more than keywords! Agree
Hummingbird's ability to handle multi-word queries is setting the stage for semantic web when search engine spiders understand context, nuance and sarcasm. Keywords are important, but the "social vitality" of your content CONFIRMS your keyword-based claims.

2. Bing Doesn't Matter. Agree
When I went to work, I "retired" last week to start my 5th company, I set up my work PC to be all BINGED up. There is enough difference between Google and Bing that I wanted to know what the other guy was thinking (and how). Bing is NOT as fast as Google and they don't understand the content as well, but unimportant they aren't.

3. Google's Hide Of Keywords Kills SEO
No death here, just have to be more intelligent about modeling our content, understanding what (in the content) is creating conversion and doing analysis BEFORE we write to know the most important keywords. If "writers" gets 3x the traffic of "contributors" then use writers.

4. Good inbound links from comments (don't be absurd, Panda helped Google SEE into all of that kind of BS so stop trying to game and create great, highly viral content instead). Comments links, almost without exception, are no follow links. If you drive links to yourself that math will stick out like the SPAM sore thumb it is.

5. Subheads don't matter much (this was new to me and disappointing, I still like subheads for engagement and formatting though).

6. Don't mistake serendipitous conditions for meaningful patterns - this is a general truth and one blown up for +1s. Pages that receive a lot of +1s are also receiving other kinds of benefits, accolades and links. MOZ pointed out that just because two things happen together doesn't mean there is a cause and effect relationship and good idea to remember at all times and in all things Internet marketing.

7. No higher rank from authorship....yet. Not sure my friend Mark Traphagen would agree, but not important enough to get all bent out of shape over in an excellent post.

Google Authorship MATTERS new Study Proves [@jeffalytics Study]

Google Authorship MATTERS new Study Proves [@jeffalytics Study] | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it
Google Plus impacts search and Google Authorship Sweetens the deal. Learn how it all works in this comprehensive 3 week study that isolates the impact of G+
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Impact of Google Authorship Study
Amazing, comprehensive study from @Jeffalytics on the impact of Google authorship. Their conclusions that YOU are becoming more important than any single website you contribute to is one important conclusion. There are many more including if you aren't using Google Authorship tags expect to be beaten to a pulp.

Another implication is BRAND your writers in addition to your website. The value of branded writers is you can apply their author rank anywhere and at any time for an immediate impact on SEO.

Great conclusions at the bottom.
http://www.jeffalytics.com/google-plus-search-authorship/

I followed up this Scoop with a brief post on ScentTrail Marketing sharing my best resource to LEARN about Google authorship and a handful of content strategy implications:
http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2013/04/google-authorship-matters-jeffalytics.html

Also wrote about the study on Google Plus and received one comment about the study's flaws. The study may have flaws, but it is helpful to do what I need to do - get the tags added. The over, what we stand to gain, is so much greater than the under, the cost of tagging, you would think adding authorship tags is a no brainer. Not so much as it turns out (lol).

Amazing Content Marketing Tool
If you don't use Haiku Deck to help create visual marketing you are missing a powerful tool. We've created 36 Haiku Decks. Over the last 22 days those decks added 8,322 views or 378 new views each day. There is NOTHING we are doing with that kind of reach...NOTHING!

We are beginning to believe Slide Decks may be an exciting new marketing channel. Amazingly NONE of our 36 decks reported zero views over the last 22 days. Even OLD decks continue to be viewed making slides and slide decks VALUABLE content indeed.

Not a complete surprise since Slideshare has been creating SEO magic for years, but Haiku Deck may have just legitimized slides as a marketing channel. You don't need an excuse to create Haiku Decks. No conference talks needed to win with these new visual marketing tools. SLIDES and Haiku Deck's CMS that sits on top of the Creative Commons are becoming a powerful content marketing tool and a widgetized marketing channel in their own right.

Social Media Publishing is dead - SMB Survival Guide: 3 Rays of Hope via @Curagami & @gdecugis

Social Media Publishing is dead - SMB Survival Guide: 3 Rays of Hope via @Curagami & @gdecugis | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it

Lions, Tigers, Bears & Content Shock & SMB Survival
Small to Medium Sized Businesses are overwhelmed. The clearest message we've received during our first six months creating our Startup Factory funded startup called Curagami is a clear protest. "Overwhelmed" is the most common adjective SMBs use to describe their situation.

Not hard to see why SMBs are feeling overwhelmed. Tactics that used to insure consistent yearly growth are sick. Tactics are drying up faster than ever.

SMB Marketing Tactics Costing More, Getting Less:

* Yellow Pages (near death).
* Print ads (near death).

* Val-u-pak coupons (near death).

* Coupons of any kind (losing relevance with smartphone users)..

* Groupons (blows brands up almost beyond repair).
* Email marketing (sick due to social / mobile web).
* Social Media Marketing (sick and getting sicker fast).
* Content Marketing.(content shock sick).

* Ecommerce (too many stores, same offerings).
* PPC (paying more to get less).
* Retargeting (cat out of bag, so sick efficacy declining).
* Video Marketing (steep learning curve, expensive).
* Viral Marketing (everyone has that cold now & hit or miss).
* Cause Marketing (not as unique as once was & live or die with partner).

* Celebrity Marketing (expensive and live or die with branded celeb).

* SEO (don't even get us started, all but gone, baby, gone).

3 Rays of Hope

1. Content Curation
Discussed by Scoop.it CEO @Guillaume Decugisin Social Media Publishing Is Dead As We Know It ( http://blog.scoop.it/2014/06/18/social-media-publishing-is-dead-as-we-know-it/ ).

2. Community
Banding and binding tribes of contributors, advocates and supporters to your cause.

3. Friends of Friends marketing.
Reaching new customers via WOM (Word-of-Mouth) supplied by fans, brand advocates and social marketing Sherpas willing to sacrifice and help your cause.

Curagami (http://wwww.curagami.com ) is focused on helping SMBs create sustainable community via the Friends-of-Friends marketing community generates.

Am Scooping Guillaume's post to use in our Curagami board meeting tomorrow and we are working on 3 cool ideas:

* Curagami SMB Survival Guide - one page "action focused" recommendations on the tapestry of marketing tools and tactics needed to know where online "success" lives these days.

* Curagami $25,000 SMB Survival Contest - Help in seo, content marketing and community building to make this holiday online selling season great.

Great Content Curators See Patterns Others Don't So Curation Is Highly Disruptive

Great Content Curators See Patterns Others Don't So Curation Is Highly Disruptive | Curation Revolution | Scoop.it
What Is Content Curation Curation is an active filtering of the web’s infinite content and it may be the most disruptive Internet marketing tactic. Curators do more than simply assign meta value via categorization.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Disruptive & Exploding Content Curation
Wish I could tell you I plan to write sentences that will resonate and define something like content curation in a helpful way. The plan is to LOVE what I do and want to share it as often and as many ways as possible almost everything after that is accident (lol).

Content curation is about to explode. It has too, as Scoop.it's CEO Guillaume noted a good argument could be made that all content that ever needs to be created already has. This means the shift is to the curators.

I read something attributed to uber-curator Maria Popova. She supposedly said each time an Internet marketer uses the word "curator" real curators kill a kitten. Popova was being dramatic, but I take her point.

Our "curation" is digital curation - the active filtering, theming and organizing of a monster fire hose of content pointed at all of us. Our ability to read and make sense of the world may mean we are all "curators". A contemporary life requires curation.

Wish I could plan my day to create another piece of content as well received and helpful as this Curatti.com post, but it doesn't work that way. Better to focus on digging the ditch that needs digging than worrying too much about "viral marketing" or "legacy" content (is my thinking :). M
