"Uncovering history as well as displaying statistics is really challenging and tricky, since traditionally both of them are associated with something boring and insipid that no one loves. However, it is hard to deny that we prefer visual over text, so why not turn this inclination into an advantage and reveal a series of facts and past events in a visually-appealing, engaging and alluring way thereby making a journey through history/story a really enjoyable and rewarding pastime. Besides, you do not have to reinvent the wheel, the solution is already here: visual storytelling is considered to be a new language for effectively and attractively communicating information."

Some really nice examples of telling stories online.  And it shoes that history doesn't need to be boring.  The stories can be easily transformed into really entertaining and memorable journeys through facts and events that not only effectively characterize a period of bygone times but also fill in the gaps in your knowledge.

The New Adobe Voice: Digital Storytelling With Style! | Jonathan Wylie | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

"Adobe launched a new free iPad app today called Adobe Voice, and it has great potential for the classroom due to the way that it lets you effortlessly create digital stories, explanations, or stylish presentations by adding your voice to a variety of images."

Read the full article to find an overview of how the app works, an example of a Hero's Quest template, and a video of a teacher using it with his class.

For more information, watch this short Adobe video promo showing how quickly a story can be pulled together.

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

This looks like a very promising app.  It includes many images and icons, templates with story prompts, library of music, and ability to record your voice over an image.  The outcome is a continuous video which can be shared.

May 12 update:  I came across this review and thought it was worth including here as it gives screenshots of the whole process and some examples the author created.

9 Steps for Using Digital Storytelling in the Classroom | Learn2Earn

9 Steps for Using Digital Storytelling in the Classroom | Learn2Earn | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

"Turn the ancient expression of storytelling into an engaging task for your 21st century students by adding a media component. Called digital storytelling, this “is the practice of combining narrative with digital content, including images, sound, and video, to create a short movie, typically with a strong emotional component.”  Not only does this help bring your classroom into the new age of educational technology, but it gets kids excited about writing and sharing their work."

Introduce digital storytelling with these nine simple steps:

  1. Show the Final Product First
  2. Encourage Purposeful Writing
  3. Don’t Forget the Editing Process
  4. Help Students Write Their Plan
  5. Include a Lesson About Copyright and Media Use
  6. Explore New Technology
  7. Help Students Create Their Narration
  8. Add Music
  9. Publish

  • Puppet Pals
  • Tellagami
Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

What a great way to jazz up a history class!  I'll be the students find this a lot more interesting than simply reading from a text.  Educators should also take a look at his suggested apps & reviews (including one on Puppet Pals).

Don't dismiss this article or stop reading because you think these apps are only for educators or children.  I can see many types of stories being told using them.  For example, how fun would it be to upload images of family events or your ancestors and then add yourself as the main character who walks and narrates you through their story.

Digital Storytelling for Social Impact | The Rockefeller Foundation

From the related blog post

"Few could argue that storytelling is a powerful tool to inspire action and change, and to influence thought leaders and decision makers. The shape and delivery of stories has also shifted dramatically in the digital era. Long-form narrative and conventionalism journalism now share a stage with messages 140 characters or images that disappear in seconds after they are opened. There have never been more ways to reach audiences, but it's also never been more difficult to really reach them.

The Foundation recognizes a big opportunity in this intersection of story and technology, and has launched a project to consider the role that digital technology can play in elevating the practice of storytelling as a means to improve the well-being of the poor and vulnerable around the world.

We drew the insights and ideas in this report from interviews and roundtable discussions with thought leaders in entertainment media and news, brand strategy, technology, philanthropy, government, nonprofits, and business."

Read the blog post to find out more about the background of this report, as well as what the foundation's next steps are.  You can also download the report (same as above SlideShare) as a pdf.

50 Web Ways to Tell a Story - Skidmore College | Alan Levine

A presentation from a workshop held at Skidmore College in March 2014.

Skidmore Storytelling

This workshop will cover a simple development process. Participants will create a digital story using images, audio, and/or video using free web tools and/or mobile apps. I use "story" in a general sense; it may be one of personal discovery or growth, a fictional narrative, a travel experience, a presentation, or something else you find worth telling. I discovered more than 50 such tools and recently have expanded the site to include mobile apps as creative platforms. As an example I created the same story in each tool. The result is that a good story and the creative process should and do transcend the tools.

The workshop process:

  • Warm Up Activity
  • The Way of the 50+ Ways (presentation above)
  • Table Group Activity: Story Brainstorm
  • Table Group Activity: Pick and Find the So What?
  • Table Group Activity: Find Media
  • Individual Activity: Build a Story in a Web Tool and/or a Mobile App
  • Summary and Review

To see the workshop in action see Alan's blog post.

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

Over the years I have referred many times to Alan's original site and am a huge fan.  He took a single story idea, retold it using free web tools, and posted the results.  I'm so glad to see he's updating it on a new site and adding mobile apps.  And also invites others to contribute.

I like the format he used at Skidmore (described above).  It looked like it was a lot of fun and pretty easy format to replicate at your own digital storytelling workshop.
