Motherhood, interrupted: brands must be sensitive to the stresses of digital parenting

Motherhood, interrupted: brands must be sensitive to the stresses of digital parenting | Herstory | Scoop.it
At a time when parenting is endlessly interrupted by digital communication and social media, brands must beware of exacerbating the pressure on women, writes Nicola Kemp. According to @babycentreuk, mothers feel under intense pressure, and don’t need that made worse by brands.

More Time With Mom Has Little to No Effect on Children’s Well-Being » Sociological Images | Herstory | Scoop.it

The driving force behind all this focused time is the idea that it’s good for kids. That’s why parents often feel guilty if they can’t find the time or even go so far as to quit their full-time jobs to make more time.

This assumption, however, isn’t bearing out in the science, at least not for mothers’ time.

"Guns Don't Kill People; Dad's With Pretty Daughters Kill People" | Herstory | Scoop.it
Straight out of the creepy files, dads are viewing their daughters as their own property -- property which can be defended like some backward "stand your ground" law. The following exhibits were al...

@Laura Brown I can't agree with you. Wearing shirts about guns & violent threats isn't the answer to rape culture. In fact, this stinks more of rape culture than anything. It's about a man's property; not respect or a woman's value.
Laura Brown's comment, January 21, 2015 6:23 PM
I'm reading it as more bluster or humour based. But the tone of protecting daughters is still important. People don't protect something or someone they don't value.
Laura Brown's comment, January 21, 2015 6:25 PM
Maybe it's a Canada/ US difference too. Not many people here actually have a gun to wave around. So here a shirt like that would not be seen as serious versus humour or propaganda.

What's Wrong with This Picture? Why Maria Kang Can't Tell People What to Do. - BlogHer (blog) | Herstory | Scoop.it

How can you tell women that if they just put down the pound cake and took up your prayer and exercise regime they would look like that, when you don't even look like that? I am...disappoint. And none of this is to say her photo here isn't gorgeous. The only one saying that is her, when she thanks her fans for being "understanding and supportive" of her stomach skin. She is a damn knockout, as she is. I'm sorry she doesn't see it that way.

A mom and dad respond to their gay 7-year-old

A mom and dad respond to their gay 7-year-old | Herstory | Scoop.it

by MARY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS, Salon.com

The tale began a few months ago, when blogger Amelia penned a column about her then 6-year-old son’s crush on Blaine from “Glee.” She noted how her husband had observed at the time, “So if at 16 he wants to make a big announcement at the dinner table, we can say ‘You told us when you were six.’”

They didn’t have to wait nearly that long. Just last month, Amelia, who has been steadily chronicling her family’s experiences in this new terrain, wrote a piece entitled “When Your 7-Year-Old Son Announces, ‘I’m Gay.’” In it, she reveals how her Blaine-crushing offspring, a child who just a few months earlier had no concept of the word “gay,” had casually come out to her one day, right before bounding off to play with his brothers. “Gay,” he’d said. “I’m gay.”

And what did mom do? She “leaned down to eye level with him and rubbed my nose against his,” and told him, “I love you so much.” [MORE]
