Why My Mother Wants Me Dead

Why My Mother Wants Me Dead | Herstory | Scoop.it
When Sabatina James refused an arranged marriage, she sparked a violent war within her family—and a threat on her life.

The trouble started when I was 15. At the time, my family was living in the Austrian city of Linz, a world away from our native Pakistan, where I had grown up in a rural village in the shadow of the Kashmir mountains. I loved the freedoms of my new life in Europe—the T-shirts and jeans, the lipstick and eyeliner. My conservative parents didn’t. We fought about swimming lessons and acting classes, which my father said were for prostitutes. Tampons were an issue, too—my mother thought they would ruin my virginity.

Things Your Grandmother Knew: Living The Viva Vintage?, Or Just Plain Loco?

Things Your Grandmother Knew: Living The Viva Vintage?, Or Just Plain Loco? | Herstory | Scoop.it

"It's true that some of us have overly romanticized the 1950s (or any era, really); but some of us have demonized the past as well. In the process, we've thrown the baby of helpful household tips out with the bathwater of modernism and/or feminism. This "either or" or "all or nothing" thinking has diminished the value of housewives and housework, and, in my opinion, many of the so-called conveniences are anything but -- they've only raised other economic, environmental and health problems, for individuals and our country as a whole."

News Flash: People With Disabilities Have Sex

News Flash: People With Disabilities Have Sex | Herstory | Scoop.it
There is a persistent and damaging myth that people with disabilities don't have sex. It is too often believed that if you don't move your legs than you don't orgasm, or if you don't move your arms than you can't make someone else come all over you.

Penile Code Avenger: Skating On Thin Ice

Penile Code Avenger: Skating On Thin Ice | Herstory | Scoop.it

"After a traumatic event, how you see things changes. Quite literally.

When you survive domestic violence, you often aren't allowed this fact of life. Recognizing or acknowledging to others how you've been affected by the trauma(s) is a "luxury" you can't afford because the perceptions & projections -- along with observable deeds and actual words of other people already accuse you of not getting over things and moving on with your life. This leads you, a very fragile you who already is fearful of so many things -- including trusting yourself, to keep your mouth shut.

Pink Populace Paparazzi Parade Exposé: The Death Of Natalie Wood

Pink Populace Paparazzi Parade Exposé: The Death Of Natalie Wood | Herstory | Scoop.it

"What is it about beauty, glamour, talent, death, and tragedy that captures humans so? When they are combined, they create some sort of alchemy that's nearly impossible to deny.

The lives, loves, and losses of these famous people are exaggerated versions of things in our own lives, and the drama does more than intrigue -- it creates a shared sense of nostalgia in which we can each experience our own sorrows and joys in a more distant way which may be disconnected from our own pain but also connects us to one another.

For these reasons stories are powerful, popular and even positive. But when one takes them too far, when one forgets that Natalie was a real person and so her death was real to her and all who love(d) her, and pursues the subject with a fascination which removes the dignity from the souls involved, we are perverse. And this includes the media which banks on such attentions."

Vintage lingerie advertising

Vintage lingerie advertising | Herstory | Scoop.it

We love this 1950s bullet bra ad from Formfit - "For a Sweetheart of a Figure".

The Formfit Company was established in 1917 with headquarters in Chicago as a maker of women’s “foundation garments” – mainly corsets and girdles.

It was one of the largest, if not the largest manufacturers of such products in the world. At their Chicago headquarters they had a building a block long and eight stories high which housed manufacturing, shipping and sales.

Later they also became known for other types of lingerie, particularly bras and briefs.

Rachel Maddow: How I Was Outed By My College Newspaper

Rachel Maddow: How I Was Outed By My College Newspaper | Herstory | Scoop.it

by Meenal Vamburkar, Mediaite.com

Anyone familiar with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddowlikely won’t be surprised to hear that she chose to “come out of the closet in a very confrontational way.” Her method of choice? Her college newspaper. Oh, and that’s how her parents found out, too.

In a recent Newsweek piece, Maddow starts by saying she figured out she was gay as a college freshman. “I was heady with the self-importance of a 17-year-old who knows everything and is smarter than everybody,” she said. “A trait that is great at the moment and really hard to live with in retrospect.” And that self-importance led to her decision. America in Ferment -the 60s Gay and Lesbian Liberation

America in Ferment -the 60s Gay and Lesbian Liberation | Herstory | Scoop.it

"Early in the morning of June 27, 1969, New York City police staged a raid on the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar whose patrons included transvestites, gay men, and lesbians. Raids on gay or cross-dresser bars were common at the time. State law threatened bars with the loss of their liquor licenses if they tolerated same-sex dancing or employed or served men who wore women's clothing. Instead of acquiescing in the raid, the bar's patrons fought back, battling the police with bricks, bottles, and shards of broken glass. Three days of civil disobedience followed."
