Voices.com recently published details on the total number of job cast through them---155, 915---and total earnings (over $39 million), since they started their casting website. Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't ignore tthe fact that Voices.com and Voice 1-2-3 have had a significant impact on the way voiceovers, especially non-Union ones, are cast. Another interesting stat: average earnings per job booked are $257. (I wish they they had also provided the mean earnings per job, which would have given a better indication of what the 'typical" job booked through them actually pays.) The article also includes information and details by age, gender and the types of jobs booked.

InsideVoiceover: Not everyone has $3200 available to spend on the Neumann U87, but how do some of the lower-priced competitors, like the $400 Advanced Audio CM-87, match up? You can listen and compare for yourself...(Make sure to click on "Identify the Mics" to find out which mic is which...)

Congratulations are due to my fellow SF Bay Area voice actor and one of the most sought-after audio book narrators in the business, Simon Vance, who was nominated for a prestigious Audie award in the "HUMOR" category for "Paul is Undead." Simon is up against mighty formidable competition in this category, including the cast of the "Daily Show," David Sedaris and Elaine Stritch. At the risk of sounding cliche', we note that just being nominated in the company of these comedy icons is an honor in itself, and quite an impressive accomplishment. Way to represent the 415-510-650-925-707-408, Simon!
"The Audio Publishers Association (APA) has announced nominations for its 2011 Audies® competition, the only awards program in the United States devoted entirely to honoring spoken word entertainment. Winners will be announced at the Audies Gala on May 24, 2011, at The TimesCenter in New York City."
InsideVoiceover comment: Practical, smart and a fun, edgy read to boot. "How To"/Marketing advice E-book from Dublin-based VO Casting Site with the best name of any voiceover-related business ever: "Piehole." (Wish I'd thought of it.) There are a few suggestions I disagree with...namely #'s 23 - 25---putting you photos on marketing materials and business cards; offering your services for free---but most of the rest of the advice seems sound. Also gives cool list of ad agencies and studios in Dublin and London, should you ever need to record a gig while visiting the UK or Ireland.

Good, common sense advice from the crew at Timbuktoons about directing voice actors during a recording session. It is really helpful for voice actors to work with directors who are really familiar with the script, storyline and characters. This is one of the main reasons that Pixar is consistently able to get great performances from the actors they hire.

The trend toward on-line casting first took off in the voiceover industry 12-13 years ago, and now on-camera casting finally appears to be catching up...Interesting WSJ article on the big changes in how projects are cast nowadays, brought about primarily by rapid advances in technology. InsideVoiceover: Really. Who cares what it's about...it's Johnny Depp! Ok, seriously...In a departure from the way that voiceover is usually recorded for feature-length animated films, director Gore Verbinski had the cast of "Rango" work together on a soundstage and actually perform the scenes. It'll be interesting to see whether this additional layer of connection and involvement among the actors comes through in their voice acting.

Zach Cole blogs about a new business book just came out that's based around the concept that in order to be successful, you need to give to other people your true self, "If you are trying to put on a front or be something greater or less than you actually are, you are automatically sacrificing that which makes you genuinely you." I find that nowhere is this more true than in voiceover. But what about voice actors who play characters?" you might ask. No such thing, really, but that's a whole other topic we'll have to leave for another day...
