This is great article, so relevant to what we have been learning in our Digital Learning and Teaching unit. I was pleased to note that I have been using a number of the 15 strategies listed here when I've been on prac so it is good to see some formal consolidation! There's some new things here just the same - like Live Tiles - that would be great to try and transform the classroom learning experiences. One of my favourites listed here? Number 5, using handwritten notes to reinforce and embed learning. Sometimes 'old school' is worth remembering.

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today’s school children are facing a “global achievement gap”, which is the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.

This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today’s school children – brought up with the internet – are motivated to learn.

In his book The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner identifies seven core competencies every child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.

1. Critical thinking and problem-solving

 

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

 

3. Agility and adaptability

 

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism

Schools are not doing enough for students to use their imagination trhough creativity.  Maybe is becuase as grownups our imagination is curbed by rules, limits and theories.  Children are very creative and they have great imagination.  Teaching methods should be transformed using the technology available such as students taking pictures, making videos, and expressing their thoughts creatively with others.

The advantage of using technology devices in the classroom is that it opens the doors to a vast universe of possibilities in which the student may take part and use to complete assignments and homework. The large quantity of sources available to students online, including learning applications, serve students as a springboard to their imagination and their creative tendencies to help them understand more about the world. In my classroom I incorporate the use of applications and the internet by assigning students assignments that require them to search the web and apply their creative ideas to make one-of-a-kind projects and assignments.

Recently I bought myself the latest model of 3D-printers from Formlabs, the Form2.

The Form 2 delivers high-resolution prints in  Industrial 3D printing quality and it is very, very expensive. (I had been waiting (and saving money) for 3 years until I made the financial plunge to get such a machine)

But it has the huge advantage that dosen’t require a lot of tweaking and experimenting to run, you just take it out of the box, you install it and it runs !! It comes with the right software, the materials you need to use are in sich a packaging (1 Liter resin cartridges !) that you can concentrate on the objet you’re printing and not on the maintenance of the machine. The system recognises the resin type, configures settings, and allows you to keep track of resin supplies.

The Form 2 is a SLA printer where SLA stand for Stereolithography. SLA is an additive manufacturing – commonly referred to as 3D printing – technology that converts liquid materials into solid parts, layer by layer, by selectively curing them using a light source in a process called photopolymerization. SLA is widely used to create models, prototypes, patterns, and production parts for a range of industries from engineering and product design to manufacturing, dentistry, jewelry, model making, and education.

I chose this resource because I agree 100% with the title. When I have used different technology and different programs with my students, they love it. Students in todays society get bored sitting in class with teachers talking to them. They want to be up and moving around working with technology to help them learn. I hope that this article will prove to our teachers that they must use technology for the benefit of their students. I have been in special education classrooms where autistic students were benefiting so much from programs on the iPad. Implementing these practices is so important to our students.

I chose this resource because students can be so creative when using technology in their education. They aren't restricted, and can create assignments or projects that make sense to them. They aren't restricted, and don't have to do exactly what the teacher tells them. I hope that this article will come true for many schools around America. Too often, teachers are afraid to let students be creative with the use of technology, because it is outside of their comfort zone to let the students venture off and create their own learning opportunities.
