How I Connect Students Through Project-Based Learning -

How I Connect Students Through Project-Based Learning - | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
One area that I’ve tried to focus on in my teaching recently is collaboration, specifically how students collaborate with one another.

I enjoy having students work together within the same class because I believe in the value of building relationships and establishing a positive classroom culture. I also know how effective it is to take advantage of the time in class for students to become more familiar with each other and to work together towards a common goal.

Understanding that not everything can be accomplished in a classroom is a big reason for this shift in my teaching–and this is where I believe that technology can be extraordinarily useful with a real sense of purpose.

This year I have been focusing on design challenges and design thinking with my gifted elementary students, grades 2nd through 6th. Last semester I introduced a series of activities to have them explore, learn about, and interact with design thinking principles and strategies. For a description of those activities, see https://usergeneratededucation.wordpress.com/2016/09/25/introducing-design-thinking-to-elementary-learners/

To re-introduce design thinking again for this spring semester, this week I asked them to do the Extraordinaire Design Studio:

A new way to learn: Oconto Middle School opens Bayshore Community Academy

A new way to learn: Oconto Middle School opens Bayshore Community Academy | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

by Kent Tempus

summary by MiddleWeb SmartBrief

"Sixty students in grades 5-7 in Oconto, Wis., will learn most academic subjects through student-led projects as part of a new charter school that opened on a traditional middle-school campus. While math will be taught through traditional instruction in longer, 80-minute blocks, other core subjects -- science, social studies and reading -- will be integrated into projects. "With this, the kids will be able to develop skills without even realizing it at times," teacher Jenny Holmgren said. "

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem! ~ MindShift

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem! ~ MindShift | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

by Ian Quillen

"Creating a safe recreation space for teens; protoyping a recyclable lunch tray; setting up a water delivery system to guard against urban fires; building a public awareness campaign to combat hunger. These are just a few of examples of the types of tasks students are taking on when they participate in the Design Learning Challenge, an effort to get students to figure out how to solve real-world problems in their communities.

"Combining project-based learning, with an emphasis on the arts and design thinking, this academic competition now in its third year — a partnership between the Industrial Designers Society of America, or IDSA, and the National Art Education Association, or NAEA — has more than 750 students participating this year."

I have rescooped this resource from @Rebecca White as it is a great resource for teaching the Design and technology strand and incorporates sustainability. The website focuses on design thinking, 21st century learning skills, design learning research, curriculum frameworks, project based learning and engaging today’s students. It links with the Australian Curriculum for technology including design technology as it is build student computational thinking by getting them to create and evaluate projects which aims towards creating preferred futures.

Katherine Reed's curator insight, April 7, 2014 10:34 PM

This is the background information for competitions that are coordinated between designers and educators to promote students thinking about how to solve real world problems using design.  There are links provided to sample problems and challenges suited for Prep to Year 4 levels as well as more in depth concepts for high school students, such as designing jobs for 2050.  Interesting read and plenty of information to be explored.

How to Make Your Classroom a Thinking Space - Suzie Boss

How to Make Your Classroom a Thinking Space - Suzie Boss | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Take a moment and imagine a creative work environment. Don't worry about the kind of work going on. Just focus on the space. Close your eyes and picture it. What is that space like? What does it sound like? How are people interacting? Is there movement? Is there evidence of work in progress? Is it tidy, or busy-messy? Can you imagine working there?

Catherine Selby's curator insight, May 18, 2013 8:51 PM

This article gives teachers ideas on how to create a thinking space for students. In any KLA the importance of helping the students to be able to concentrate is extremely importand. One of the aims in the Australian Curriculum is to allow students to become "creative, innovative and enterprising when using traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies, and understand how technologies have developed over time."

By creating a thinking space this allows students the freedom to learn and implement the above areas.

Melita Ryland's curator insight, May 20, 2013 12:19 AM

This article asks us to rethink what we think to be a work space. They outline that a workspace can come in many different forms and still be productive. By simply moving around an changing the workspace can drastically change the outcomes of student leanring and engagement in more ways than 1.

Khushboo Singh's comment, July 8, 2013 8:30 AM
As I read through this article, I am also painting an image of workspace in my mind that can potentially foster creativity. A creative workspace should be such that it enables generation of free ideas and provide opportunities for constructive engagement. The thought of garage or workshop setting or think labs come to my mind. As mentioned in the article, classroom space is very much like a workspace with the only difference that here children are learning to develop things as well as understand how things work. One of the key areas that contributes to learning is the physical space itself. There are enough evidences as also pointed out in the article, that small adjustments to the classroom space can create better engagement and connect to the topic. Depending upon the school investment/pocket size, efforts can be made from improving the physical layout, wiring, designing flexible furnitures, lighting to simple improvements like changing wall colour, movable board, displays etc. These changes will not only lead to enriched work environment but also energise children to think through situations and work in collaboration.

How Can Teachers Prepare Kids for a Connected World?

How Can Teachers Prepare Kids for a Connected World? | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"Educators are always striving to find ways to make curriculum relevant in students’ everyday lives. More and more teachers are using social media around lessons, allowing students to use their cell phones to do research and participate in class, and developing their curriculum around projects to ground learning around an activity. These strategies are all part of a larger goal to help students connect to social and cultural spaces."

A look at Henry Jenkins work on participatory learning and PLAY (Participatory Learning and You). So what is PLAY? "...'a mode of experimentation, of testing materials, trying out new solutions, exploring new horizons,' Jenkins said. It’s how kids interact with games – throwing themselves in without reading the rules, testing the limits and feeling free to try and fail."

This post provides a number of examples, discusses assesement and play, and provides links to additional articles on the subject.
