Robin Good's curator insight, January 19, 2013 7:45 AM

ClipArt ETC is a wonderful collection of quality educational clipart providing simple illustrations, icons and drawings in a multitude of areas, from history, to business, art, literature, music and sports.

A project of the Florida Center for Instructional Technology of University of South Florida), ClipArt ETC has curated over 65,000 images and organized, categorized each one of them, while providing descriptions and multiple file formats in which to download them.

I must say they really did a wonderful job. The images are great, the quality is excellent, the organization of the catalog is well done and easy to navigate.

From the official site: "Every item comes with a choice of image size and format as well as complete source information for proper citations in school projects.

No advertisement-filled pages with pop-up windows or inappropriate links here.

A friendly license allows teachers and students to use up to 50 educational clipart items in a single, non-commercial project without further permission."

The ClipArt ETC resource was designed and intended for educational projects but due to the many commercial requests it has received it now offers a "commercial" shopping cart to purchase any of its images for commercial applications. More info here: http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/info/license

What kind of digital curator are you?

What kind of digital curator are you? | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

This is an interesting workshop presentation given at #converge11 by Joyce Seitzinger. It has a focus on curation in EduTech but is generic as well in a lot of aspects.

In particular, I love the distinction she makes from slide 22 onward between all types of "curators": a fun way of showing what curation best practices should be all about.

I've been exploring the idea of 'the social media classroom' and how I view teachers with an emerging role as curators, but also teaching student the skills of curation so they can get the right resources in an age of ubiquitous information. I'll have to keep in touch.

How Curation Makes Innovation Possible

How Curation Makes Innovation Possible | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Through the work of the [Emerging Leaders Council] Emerging Ideas Committee this year, I’ve become acquainted with a wealth of new approaches to old problems and exciting combinations of existing models about which I was previously unaware. You’re seeing some examples of them on the Blog Salon this week, and we’ll be sharing more on this space as the year goes on.

For every strong example of innovation we highlight, however, I’m sure there are five more that we missed. Not because they were not among the ones we chose, but because they were never even brought to our attention.

Part of the nature of being “under the radar” is that it’s hard for people who rely on conventional information sources to find you. The five young arts professionals on our committee set out at the beginning of the year to identify novel, smart projects that weren’t getting attention from the field as a whole.

We used what resources we had at our disposal – most notably, our connection to the 30+ local Emerging Leader Networks around the country – but inevitably, our ability to “spot” innovative ventures is determined to a significant extent by those ventures’ visibility.

Why Curation Is Important for Education and Learning: 10 Key Reasons, Tools and Resources

Why Curation Is Important for Education and Learning: 10 Key Reasons, Tools and Resources | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Is Curation the new search?  Robin Good proposes that it is.  I believe that we do trust some people more than some algorithms.  This is a very interesting article about how curation can shape education.

Ken

Robin Good: Content curation will play a major role both in the way we "teach" and in the way we educate ourselves on any topic. When and where it will be adopted, it will deeply affect many key aspects of the educational ecosystem.

This article, builds up over my recent presentation on Content Curation for Education that I delivered at Emerge2012 virtual conference.

In that presentation I claimed that the adoption of "curation approaches" will directly affect the way competences are taught, how textbooks are put together, how students are going to learn about a subject, and more than anything, the value that can be generated for "others" through a personal learning path.

If we learn not by memorizing facts, but by collaborating with others in the creation of a meaningful collection-explanations of specific topics/issues/events then, for the first time in history, we can enrich planetary knowledge each time we take on a new learning task.

And it's already happening.

Yes, we are only at the very early stages, but, in my humble opinion, there are enough signs and indications that this is not going to be something marginal.

In this article I outline ten key factors, already at work, which, among others, will very likely pave the way for a much greater and rapid adoption of curation practices in the educational / academic world.

Curate Custom Video Learning Courses with Course Hero

Curate Custom Video Learning Courses with Course Hero | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Course Hero is a platform which allows the creation and delivery of online video courses curated from the best existing published content on that topic.

There are already ready-made courses to access or you can submit a topic that you would like to video-curate into a course.

"You can learn just about anything from YouTube...if you're willing to dig through millions of videos."

From Techcrunch: "Luckily, Course Hero has done the work for you, offering coherent classes by hosting collections of the best educational YouTube videos and other content.

The newly launched courses section of the eduTech startup’s site now has classes in entrepreneurship, business plan development, and programming in a variety of languages.

...

By drawing from YouTube and other openly available education, Course Hero plans to set up courses for anything it, or you, can think of.

...

Each course breaks down into roughly 6 chapters of 6 concept YouTube videos, Justin.tv videos, articles, and more. Unlike Udemy‘s one-teacher-per-class approach, Course Hero courses are compiled from content by many teachers.

Rather than put you at the mercy of long-winded professors, Course Hero trims videos and articles down to their most important teachings.

Along the way you’ll answer quiz questions, take tests to complete chapters, and face a final exam to finish a course and earn proficiency badges..."

Robin Good interviewed on curation by Howard Rheingold

Very nice interview that covers many aspects of curation: why, what to expect, how, etc... Knowing how to use social media involves knowing how to uncover the best information and then customise the information flow. This can be personal, for an organisation, for research, for promotion. This facet of information curation is an issue that information professionals need to understand and become proficient in.

Understand collective curation in under 90 seconds

When Brian Solis called 2011 the "year of curation," he identified a growing trend in how people are addressing the issue of information overload. Today's common approach to curation is driven by individuals who pick out the information they find important, fun, and interesting to share with their friends. The problem with this approach is we naturally tend to associate with like-minded friends, so we're not exposed to a diverse set of information. The outcome is we get stuck in what Eli Pariser calls "Filter Bubbles." A new approach that we call "collective curation" represents a more effective and more efficient way to get the information we need.
