Twitter is a powerful educational social networking website that has a huge potential for teachers professional development.

Twitter is also ideal as a PLN where you get to connect with other educators from all around the globe and exchange teaching and learning materials with them. Building a PLN, however, requires making acquaintances with similar like-minded teachers and also developing your list of followers; but once you have such a solid PLN problems of maintaining it and staying updated with what others tweet become a tricky challenge.

I have curated for you some powerful tools to help you benefit the maximum from the PLN you create on Twitter. Check them out below.

Gaurav Pandey's curator insight, May 21, 2013 9:50 PM

Twitter has been tighteing control over what goes on to the site of late. We've seen random accounts being blocked, including that of some of the biggest "influencers" on the planet. Truth be told, I always make it a point to ensure I don't have any stupid bots following me, whereas most people would have at least 25% fake accounts. The follower count is dead. Those in the know, know who to talk to.

Facebook 'Likes' can reveal your sexuality, ethnicity, politics, and your parent's divorce

Facebook 'Likes' can reveal your sexuality, ethnicity, politics, and your parent's divorce | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
Big data is not your friend because it can easily be used to reveal highly personal information...

Big data is the Stasi of our online worlds

There are many "silent listeners" in social networks that collect people's "Likes" and other online behaviors so that the information can be sold discretely to third parties. Facebook, Google, and all other social networks, also collect such behavioral information.

===> While the companies say that their behavioral Big Data is stripped of users' names, it is possible to use other databases such as electoral records, demographic information, and location data, to identify individuals by name.

It's essentially a secret dossier on more than a 1 billion social network users. <===

While this dossier is fragmented at the moment, sophisticated new technologies will soon make it trivial to pull together a massive amount of sensitive private data on every individual that interacts with the Internet in any way.

Hacking Twitter ‘incredibly easy,’ security specialist says

Hacking Twitter ‘incredibly easy,’ security specialist says | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

Two bucks and a rudimentary command of the English language is enough for a successful Twitter hack, the likes of which was carried out against Associated Press Tuesday when hackers tweeted the false report that President Obama had been injured in explosions at the White House.

"It is incredibly easy to do, it takes zero technical skill and it has a high success rate," said Ryan Purita, forensic examiner and security specialist with Vancouver's Sherlock Forensics. "For the average Joe, it might be impossible to do, but for the average 14-year-old who lives on the Internet, it's easy."

The bogus tweet, which read: "Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured," resulted in an immediate stock market drop, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging 150 points within seconds before recovering almost as quickly.

A tweet from @APMikeBaker suggests the hack may have resulted from a "phishing" expedition:
