New BTS “Gaming” and “IoT” at Arts et Métiers
The Lycée des Arts et Métiers (College of Arts and Crafts) in Luxembourg will enrich its offer in September, with three new BTS courses dedicated to gaming and the Internet of Things, two areas which point to more and more opportunities on the employment market.

For more than 20 years, the Lycée des Arts et Métiers (LAM), the oldest public technical college in the country, has been awarding numerous diplomas (Brevets de Technicien Supérieur – BTS). In September, three new degrees will be taught at the college: “Internet of Things” (IoT), “Game Art and Game Design” (AG) and “Game Programming and Game Design” (GP).

Arts et Métiers is one of three establishments in Luxembourg (with the Esch Technical college and the brand new Edward Steichen college in Clervaux) to have the “FutureHub” label of excellence awarded by the Ministry of Education.

It is about valuing and highlighting the efforts of an institute of further education to open up to technologies and innovative learning of science, especially computer science. “This means that we are able to use these new technologies in teaching in a holistic and concrete way, identifying which applications are possible with which tools,” explains Fabrice Roth, Computer Science Teacher and FutureHub Coordinator.

Gaming, Big Data oder FinTech: Sei es das eigene Computerspiel oder eine Formel für einen Erfolgssong, in den drei Modulen des Wahlfach-Projektes „Luxembourg Tech School“ dreht sich alles um Digitaltechnik. Die Schüler können ihre IT-Interessen ausleben, ihr außerschulisches Wissen aufpolieren und ihren Lebenslauf für Praktikums- oder Unibewerbungen interessanter machen. An dem Pilotprojekt beteiligen sich die Lyzeen Michel-Rodange, Aline Mayrisch und Athénée.

Derzeit stecken die 32 Schüler zwischen 15 und 18 Jahren mitten im zweiten Modul: Mithilfe großer Datensätze wollen sie bestimmten Fragestellungen nachgehen. Über Internetseiten wie die Web-Plattform Kaggle.com suchen sie nach großen öffentlichen Datensätzen, die sie dann mithilfe von Algorithmen genauer untersuchen.

Les lycées techniques d’Esch-sur-Alzette et des arts et métiers lancent dès septembre quatre nouveaux brevets de technicien supérieur (BTS) axés sur les nouvelles technologies. Tous ont été conçus en étroite collaboration avec les entreprises.

Si la formation tout au long de la vie - en anglais «life-long learning» - est dans toutes les bouches au Luxembourg, les diplômes professionnalisants savent également s’adapter aux nouveaux besoins du marché du travail.

Le ministère de l’Éducation vient d’accréditer quatre nouveaux BTS, qui seront lancés à la rentrée. L’un a été conçu par le Lycée technique d’Esch-sur-Alzette et concerne le «cloud computing». Les trois autres sont proposés par le Lycée des arts et métiers et se concentrent sur l’internet des objets (IoT) et le monde du jeu vidéo à travers la programmation d’un côté, et la partie artistique de l’autre.

«Il s’agit d’une formation très spécialisée et nouvelle non seulement pour le Luxembourg, mais également pour la Grande Région», explique Marc Schmit, le coordinateur du BTS cloud computing au Lycée technique d’Esch-sur-Alzette. «Déjà plusieurs entreprises nous ont fait part de leur souhait de devenir partenaire de cette formation.»

Une récompense à Cannes
Répondre à une demande du marché est aussi la logique qui a conduit le Lycée des arts et métiers à développer ses trois nouveaux diplômes. «Tous les BTS que nous créons sont conçus pour permettre une intégration directe des étudiants sur le marché du travail», rappelle Fabrice Roth, attaché à la direction du Lycée des arts et métiers.

Il faut dire que son établissement a lancé le premier BTS du Luxembourg, il y a 25 ans. Il s’adressait au dessin d’animation, et l’un des anciens diplômés, Alexandre Espigares, a obtenu en 2014 une récompense à Cannes pour son court-métrage «Mr Hublot». Une grande fierté pour un lycée qui a toujours cru dans l’enseignement professionnel.
