The Cybersecurity Agency for the Luxembourg Economy and Municipalities.

Yesterday, the Governing Board of the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre officially met for the second time, gathering representatives from Member States, the Commission and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, ENISA.

During the meeting took place the election of the Chair of the Governing board. Pascal Steichen was elected to this position for three years, once renewable. Furthermore, the list of National Competence Centers officially appointed by the Member States was ratified by the board and published.

The European Cybersecurity Competence Centre, which will be located in Bucharest, together with the Network of National Coordination Centres, will contribute to strengthening European cybersecurity capacities as well as boosting research excellence and the competitiveness of the Union’s industry in this field.

Silicon Luxembourg has announced that the number of cybersecurity companies in Luxembourg has doubled in the past five years.

Between 2015 and 2020, the number of companies belonging to the Luxembourg Cybersecurity Ecosystem has doubled to 304. Ten years ago, the Grand Duchy boasted approximately fifteen cybersecurity companies.

The Ministry of Economy has been actively promoting cybersecurity since 2010 through its SECURITYMADEIN.LU platform. Now, according to a study carried out by the Market Intelligence team of Luxinnovation and SECURITYMADEIN.LU, cybersecurity is becoming one of the most important pillars of Luxembourg’s economy. Creating a cybersecurity-focused incubator would thus make it possible to attract more specialists, as well as diversifying the products offered which currently focus mainly on advice on governance and risk identification, management of digital identities and access rights, and data protection.

In the meantime, Luxembourg has developed a branding dedicated to its new ecosystem, which will be used for the first time at the the International Cybersecurity Forum (FIC) in Lille, France at the end of January. Luxembourg’s pavilion, which is supported by the Ministry of the Economy, the Chamber of Commerce and SECURITYMADEIN.LU, will display this new coat of arms, aiming to increase the visibility of the country’s policy on this subject.

Cybersecurity Week Luxembourg positions the country as a leading European location for cybersecurity start-ups, talent, investors and experts who are looking for growth opportunities.

Cybersecurity Week Luxembourg is an advocacy-campaign week, which takes place from 16 to 21 October and aims to raise awareness about cybersecurity threats, promote cybersecurity among citizens, corporates and SMEs, and provide up-to-date security information through education and sharing best practices.

SnT and SECURITYMADEIN.LU part of European Cybersecurity PPP

On July 5, 2016, the contract for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the European Commission, on the public side, and the European Cyber Security Organisation, on the private side, has been signed at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, to stimulate the cybersecurity industry in Europe on strategic research and innovation. Luxembourg is represented by SnT and SECURITYMADEIN.LU, both founder members.
 
The European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) was legally established on 13 June 2016 as fully self-financed non-for-profit association (ASBL) under Belgian law and willwork directly with the European Commission to improve Europe’s industrial policy on cybersecurity, focusing on innovation and following a strategic R&I roadmap.

On Tuesday 4 May 2021, His Royal Highness the Hereditary Grand Duke and Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, Franz Fayot, visited the premises of SECURITYMADEIN.LU, the Cybersecurity Agency for the Luxembourg Economy and Municipalities.

After a general presentation of the agency's activities,the Hereditary Grand Duke and the Economy Minister attended demonstrations including a scenario in ROOM#42, a cyber crisis simulator that allows teams participating in such an exercise to identify areas for improvement in order to consolidate their collective competence in crisis management.

A pillar of economic attractiveness for Luxembourg, "cybersecurity is fundamental to the development of a trusted digital economy" recalled Minister Franz Fayot, who congratulated Pascal Steichen, CEO of SECURITYMADEIN. LU, and his team for the work carried out in investigating and responding to incidents on the one hand and in supporting Luxembourg companies for better prevention and management of cyber risk on the other.

François Thill, Cybersecurity Director at the Ministry of the Economy and Chairman of the Board of Directors of SECURITYMADEIN.LU, thanked the government for its continued support in the development of cybersecurity in Luxembourg, allowing the country to position itself as a major player in Europe in this field.

The Luxembourg Institute of Standardisation, Accreditation, Safety and Quality of Products and Services (ILNAS) and SECURITYMADEIN.LU held a conference on "Standarisation & Cybersecurity" on Monday 21 October 2019.

With the spread of connected digital systems, information and communication technologies (ICTs) are subject to ever more numerous and sophisticated cyberattacks. Technical standards provide guidelines and good practices for dealing with these risks and for better protecting cyberspace. In this context, ILNAS and SECURITYMADEIN.LU invited national stakeholders to a conference last week to present relevant technical standardisation activities for the cybersecurity domain and their link to the national ecosystem.

Ce 19 mars débutera l'édition de printemps de la Cybersecurity Training Week Luxembourg organisée par le Cybersecurity Competence Center Luxembourg.

Grâce à des partenariats avec les entreprises spécialisées dans le secteur, les participants pourront apprendre comment protéger leur entreprise des problèmes de sécurité venus du monde digital, mais aussi comment réagir en cas de problème ou encore comment penser comme un hacker.

Du 19 au 23 mars, l'ensemble des sujets liés à la cybersécurité seront couverts avec pas moins de quatre trainings et deux conférences donnés par les partenaires de la C3 Training Week.

L’accroissement des incidents informatiques, certains étant de nature criminelle, a amené le gouvernement à étoffer sa stratégie de défense.

Le Luxembourg doit s’organiser face aux risques liés aux technologies de l’information. 

«Suite à l’informatisation et la digitalisation de notre société, le moment est venu d’avancer et de regrouper en un centre de compétences en cybersécurité, appelé le C3, l’ensemble des expériences, c’est-à-dire d’informations opérationnelles et de connaissances sur les menaces, les vulnérabilités et l’efficacité des mesures de protection, acquises par le ministère de l’Économie et Securitymadein.lu et de les mettre à profit de toute l’économie», estime le ministre de l’Économie. «Cette nouvelle ‘intelligence’ constitue la base du C3 qui sera mis sur pied par Securitymadein.lu en étroite collaboration avec des partenaires-clés.»

Le C3, annoncé il y a un an lors du Cyber Security Day et dont l’inauguration est prévue le 12 octobre dans les locaux de Securitymadein.lu, sera chargé de l’élaboration de rapports et informations nécessaires à la bonne gouvernance de la sécurité («threat intel»), de la formation (via un simulateur de scénarios d’attaques permettant des entraînements opérationnels réalistes) et du contrôle ou «testing» de nouvelles technologies, provenant notamment de start-up, qui sera également effectué grâce au simulateur de scénarios d’attaques. Une approche innovante de la prévention et de la réponse aux cyberattaques, permettant aux entreprises de bénéficier du savoir-faire développé par les services d’intelligence informatique de l’État.

Security Made in Luxembourg has announced five measures that will help with protecting and securing our computers and digital devices in 2017.

It may be a new year, but the same cyber-threats are present as always. Such threats include password hacking, Ransomwares, increasing attacks using mobile interfaces to gain entry, the boom of the internet of things which tend to pass under CSO radars, and finally the delay between an attack and its discovery, which is not likely to decrease.

To help protect ourselves from such threats, Security Made in Luxembourg has recommended the following steps to take in the new year:

1. Create a strong and unique password comprised of at least 12 characters, including numbers and special characters. There should also be two-factor authentication activated when possible for added security.

2. Prevent Ransomewares by backing up regularly.

3. Prevent mobile malwares on smartphones and tablets by only connecting to trusted networks or using particular professional applications.

4. Use extra security measures for the internet of things, which can be attacked by undetected malwares.

 5. Be aware of cyber-attacks and cyber-attack attempts and share any you may find with others rather than ignoring them, so as to best face this type of threat.

Finally, do not forget that personal data is exactly that: personal. As such, new European regulation is introducing the “privacy by design” initiative, to come into effect on 25 May 2018, to better protect personal information.
