If we can’t ban them, then they must be regulated, and soon, before it’s too late.

I recently sat and passed my test for a Luxembourg driving license, as I didn’t have a current EU one. So after more than three decades on the roads in cars, trucks motorbikes and cycles, I found myself looking at the road through a newbie’s perspective. And what I saw was terrifying!

Not only do most people not understand the basics (Roundabouts people!), but there are a lot of grey areas that will only cause more and more problems in time. It’s bad enough that the bicycle mafia have taken over and everything is manoeuvred to sate their growing lust for power, but electric scooters, skateboards and unicycles have seen the loopholes and are attempting to widen them into a Fury Route Apocalypse.

Are Daydreams Electric?
I get it, you’re hip, cool and care more about the environment than anyone else. You daydream about a new, clean and efficient way to travel. But that doesn’t mean you get to make things up as you go along.

Are you a vehicle? Stay on the road and follow road rules. Are you a pedestrian? No? Then why are you on the sidewalk? Are you both? None of the above? Do you think you’re safer than cars? Then why do you zoom behind busses then jump kerbs only to roll through grass, skimming past elderly couples, children and mothers with prams to cut 1 minute off your travel time?

Do they think the rules don’t apply to them? Well, in part, no they don’t.

In April 2017, the Ville de Luxembourg launched a call for tender for setting up and operating a self-service eBike system across the city; tollowing the analysis of the tenders submitted as well as the negotiations with the candidates, the new contract - to operate until 1 January 2028 - has been awarded to JCDecaux Luxembourg SA (the current Vel'oh operator), its offer being economically the most advantageous.

The new contract will be operational from 1 July 2018 and will include (in the first phase) 80 stations (up from the current 69) with 800 bicycles, all with electric assistance: Luxembourg city will be one of the first European cities to offer a network with 100% electric bicycles. Like the old (Vel'oh) system, the bicycles will be available 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.

The contract has been arranged to allow neighbouring municipalities to join the network and avail of its advantages - comfortable, flexible and ecological transport.

E-Bikes sind teuer. Um die Elektromobilität und obendrein auch das klassische Fortbewegen per Drahtesel zu fördern, hat die Regierung beschlossen, eben diese staatlich zu unterstützen.

Zwischen 1.500 und 2.000 Euro muss man hinblättern, um stolzer Besitzer eines E-Bikes zu werden. Hand aufs Herz: Das ist eine Menge Geld. Mit der Wiedereinführung von Prämien, anhand derer der Elektromobilität Flügel verliehen werden sollen, hat die Regierung vor etwas mehr als drei Wochen nun ein deutliches Signal gesetzt: Es reicht nicht, neue Fahrradwege anzulegen, auch der Erwerb von Fahrrädern soll demnach attraktiver gemacht werden.

Ab sofort bekommt man bis zu 25 Prozent des Preises beim Kauf eines Bikes zurückerstattet, wobei die Obergrenze maximal 300 Euro beträgt. Das gilt sowohl für handelsübliche Fahrräder als auch für Velos, bei denen der Fahrer von einem Elektroantrieb unterstützt wird, Fahrräder also, die mit integriertem Elektromotor ausgestattet sind, der zum Antrieb verwendet werden kann. Beantragt werden die Prämien bei der Umweltverwaltung. Dabei muss es sich allerdings um eine Neuanschaffung handeln, die zudem privat genutzt wird. Darüber hinaus muss der Eigentümer in Luxemburg wohnhaft sein. Eine weitere Bedingung ist die, dass der Drahtesel zwischen dem 1. Januar 2019 und dem 31. Dezember 2019 gekauft wurde bzw. wird. Ob im In- oder Ausland, spielt dabei keine Rolle.
