In this article, Shulman describes both the possibilities of Smart Technologies and the beneficial impact it has on education as well as the pitfalls of it. Educators and other stakeholders should accept their responsibility in the ethical use of smart technologies in education.
I strongly believe that with proper use and management, smart technologies can benefit education for children tremendously and outweigh the pitfalls it may have when using it properly.

How Edtech Can Help Build a Blueprint for Real Change in K-12

How Edtech Can Help Build a Blueprint for Real Change in K-12  | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"There are over 132,000 school communities in the United States. Many have some innovative programs at their edges, but few have redesigned the core of school in a meaningful sense, or in ways that meet the needs of diverse learners, equity and a radically shifting economy. Meanwhile, billions of dollars have been spent on edtech by these same school communities. By and large, these investments have only served to reinforce the status quo. But there may be an alternative."

High-Tech Surveillance Comes at High Cost to Students. Is It Worth It? | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"The phrase “school-to-prison pipeline” has long been used to describe how schools respond to disciplinary problems with excessively stringent policies that create prison-like environments and funnel children who don’t fall in line into the criminal justice system. Now, schools are investing in surveillance systems that will likely exacerbate existing disparities."

"Edtech has not reached its full potential. There are a number of reasons for this situation, but the criticism that’s most often directed at developers is the fact that they don’t consult their users. Fact is, educators often only hear about a new tech solution that they must implement after administration has already made the purchase decision."

Erica Casas Esquivel's curator insight, September 10, 2019 2:25 PM
Such a great article about how technology is not the most important thing in a classroom. I agree entirely with this article. Teacher have a very challenging job. They do not just work to meet the educational needs of every child, but also their emotional and social needs. Technology can not replace a teacher. Also having technology does not make your classroom an innovative class. Teachers are given devices but have not idea how to utilize them. They feel pressured to integrate it into their lessons but struggle when faced with other factors such as students with behavioral and emotional issues.

Why E-Textbooks Haven't Taken Over Schools

Why E-Textbooks Haven't Taken Over Schools | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"E-textbooks have not replaced paper books at schools. There are many reasons why e-textbooks are not taking off. Let’s look at a few of them. Paper allows for more effective study Even when they have bought an e-textbook, many students print it out so they can make notes and highlight important parts of the text while they are studying. An e-book is not interactive in this way. With a pen or pencil in hand, marking off or circling text and making notes, students feel that they are actually working and learning."
