Neuropathy "The Painful Enigma"
Neuropathy is a medical term used to characterize damage or injury to the nerves, generally referring to the peripheral nerves as opposed to the central nervous system. The complications which follow neuropathy depends largely on the type of nerves that are affected. According to Dr. Alex Jimenez, different neuropathies can cause numbness and tingling sensations, increased pain or the loss of ability to feel pain, muscle weakness with twitching and cramps, and even dizziness and/or loss of control over the bladder function. The following articles take a closer approach to describe several neuropathies, their causes, whether known or unknown and possible solutions for individuals to feel relief from their neuropathy symptoms. When temperatures are elevated in summer, heat-induced and severe headaches like migraines are common during the hot months. However, a migraine caused by heat is not the same as a headache caused by heat, as the two have different symptoms. What they have in common is that they’re both triggered by the way hot weather affects the body. Understanding the causes and the warning signs of a heat headache can help prevent and treat potentially dangerous heat-related conditions. Injury Medical Chiropractic and Functional Medicine Clinic use various techniques and therapies customized to the individual to relieve pain and improve function.

Heat-Induced Headaches

Headaches and migraines are common, affecting 20 percent of women and nearly 10 percent of men. An increase in frequency can be caused by

  • Dehydration.
  • Environmental factors.
  • Heat exhaustion.
  • Heat stroke.

A heat-induced headache can feel like a dull pulsing ache around the temples or in the back of the head. Depending on the cause, a heat-induced headache may escalate to a more intensely felt internal pain.

Causes

A heat-induced headache may not be caused by the hot weather but by how the body responds to heat. Weather-related triggers of headaches and migraine include:

  • Sun glare
  • Bright light
  • High humidity
  • Sudden drops in barometric pressure
  • Weather conditions can also cause changes in serotonin levels.
  • Hormonal fluctuations are common migraine triggers that can also cause headaches.
  • Dehydration - can trigger both headaches and migraine.

When exposed to higher temperatures, the body needs more water to compensate for the lost water as it uses and sweats it out. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures puts the body at risk for heat exhaustion, one of the stages of heat stroke, with headaches as a symptom of heat exhaustion. Any time the body is exposed to high temperatures or spends a long time outside in the hot sun, and a headache occurs afterward, a heat stroke is possible.

Heat Headache Symptoms

Symptoms of a heat-induced headache can vary according to the situation. If the headache is triggered by heat exhaustion, the body will have heat exhaustion symptoms and head pain. Heat exhaustion symptoms include:

  • Dizziness.
  • Muscle cramps or tightness.
  • Nausea.
  • Fainting.
  • An extreme thirst that does not go away.

If the headache or migraine is related to heat exposure but not connected to heat exhaustion, the symptoms may include the following:

  • A throbbing, dull sensation in the head.
  • Dehydration.
  • Fatigue.
  • Sensitivity to light.

Relief

Individuals can be proactive about prevention.

  • If possible, limit time outside, protect the eyes with sunglasses, and wear a hat with a brim when staying outdoors.
  • Exercise indoors in an air-conditioned environment if able.
  • Increase water consumption as temperatures rise, and utilize healthy sports drinks to replenish electrolytes.

Home remedies can include:

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic treatment can include:

  • Craniocervical mobilization involves gentle chiropractic pressure on the neck to adjust the joints.
  • Spinal manipulation involves applying more force and pressure at certain points along the spine.
  • Neuromuscular massage includes kneading joints and muscles and relieves pain by releasing pressure from compressed nerves.
  • Myofascial release massage is aimed at the tissues that connect and support muscles and focuses on trigger points in the back and neck or head to relax muscles and improve blood circulation.
  • Trigger point therapies target tense areas to help relax muscles while improving blood flow and relieving stress.
  • Traction therapy.
  • Decompression therapy.
  • Exercises designed specifically to reduce pain.

Summer Heat Can Affect Joints and Movement • Chiropractic Scientist | Call: 915-850-0900 or 915-412-6677 | Neuropathy "The Painful Enigma" | Scoop.it

Although it is not officially summer, the past few weeks sure feels like it. Especially for those with joint discomfort and pain. As the body ages, individuals may notice their joints have some mobility/flexibility issues in the summer heat. Again, the heat and humidity are the culprits. The hotter it is, the more the body is susceptible to inflammation and swelling.

The more prone an individual's body is to swelling, the more pain can present. Barometric pressure can also have some form of impact on joint health. The pressure changes can cause the joints to become more sensitive. When the pressure changes, individuals often speak of their joints feeling tighter combined with stiffness, leading to a cycle of swelling and pain.

Joint Anatomy

Whether it’s the hip, knee, elbow, or hand, all of the body's joints have fluid in them. It is a gel-like substance known as synovial fluid. This is what lubricates the joints and keeps them functioning smoothly. However, the temperature and humidity levels can change the thickness of the fluid in the joints. This means that the synovial fluid can become inflamed with the weather changes. This is a symptom when the joints begin to feel like they cannot move and/or are becoming stiff. Joint inflammation can become more common and chronic as the body gets older.

Weather and the joints

The summer heat and humidity can affect the joint because:

  • The tendons, ligaments, and muscles expand in this type of weather
  • The heat can restrict individuals from moving around. Non-use stiffens the joints
  • Joints that have worn down cartilage could have exposed nerves that are reacting to the temperature changes
  • Humidity causes the body to lose water by sweating. This can reduce the fluid around the joints leading to stiffness, immobility, and pain.

However, not everyone has joint problems in the summer heat. Many have joint issues when it's cold, damp, or raining. Other's are at their best in cool, dry weather. It depends on an individual's body and how their joints react when the temperature changes.

Maintaining joint health for the summer heat

When joint discomfort or pain presents in the summer, there are a few easy ways to gain relief.

Properly Hydrate the Body

Water and sports drinks maintain the fluid levels in the body, specifically, it keeps the joints moving. One way to hydrate the body can be achieved by eating healthy fruits and vegetables. Water-rich fruits and vegetables include:

  • Watermelon
  • Oranges
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Spinach
  • Celery

Over-The-Counter pain ointments and creams

Arthritis and anti-inflammatory creams/ointments can ease joint pain by allowing more blood circulation in the affected areas.

Dressing for the heat

Wear loose, natural fiber, breathable clothing that allows the body to move freely while maintaining a cool temperature.

Relax in the air conditioning

Get into the air conditioning. The cool air can help reduce joint inflammation.

Get in the Water

Swimming or just wading through doing some light exercise in the water cools the body’s core. In addition, the buoyancy of the water relieves pressure on the joints.

Body Composition Testing

Body Water

The body is made up of as much as 2/3's water. Even though much of the body is made up of water, body composition changes based on functional needs. Essential functions of water include:

  • Water is the building block to almost every cell in the body
  • It regulates the body's temperature through sweating and respiration
  • Carbohydrates and proteins for energy are transported via the water in the blood
  • Water assists in the removal of metabolic waste through urination
  • It is part of the shock-absorbing system that protects the brain and spinal cord
  • Water is part of the saliva and fluid that lubricates the joints

The amount of water in the body depends on various factors. This includes:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Physical activity
  • It is referred to as Total Body Water or TBW.

TBW is constantly changing with gains and losses of fluid in healthy adults. The body can detect irregularities and compensate for losses and/or gains to ensure that the systems are balanced.

Neuropathy Summer Tips | Call: 915-850-0900 or 915-412-6677 | Neuropathy "The Painful Enigma" | Scoop.it

Even though it is not officially summer, the heat says otherwise. Individuals with neuropathy can experience flare-ups when out in the heat for extended periods. Avoiding discomfort and having fun with family and friends can be stressful. This could be graduations, park festivals, family gatherings, weddings, etc. Here are some neuropathy summer tips/recommendations to maintain a healthy, fun, and pain-free season.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy results from damaged or destroyed nerve cells and is often a side effect associated with diabetes, autoimmune diseases, infections, tumors, and/or hereditary conditions. Also known as peripheral neuropathy, symptoms range from tingling sensations, burning pain, muscle spasms, difficulty moving the arms or legs, feelings of light headiness, and sometimes atrophy. The symptoms depend on the damaged nerves, ranging from autonomicmotor, and sensory nerves. As neuropathy progresses, individuals may begin to feel a loss of balance.

Neuropathy Summer Tips

Research and Prepare

Preparation and planning are highly recommended to prevent a flare-up. For long outdoor ceremonies:

  • Wear sunscreen
  • Stay fully hydrated
  • Dress in cool clothes
  • Make sure footwear has proper arch/sole support and breathing room.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses
  • Stand periodically to ensure proper circulation if sitting for a while.
  • Shift weight back and forth during the event to pump circulation throughout the body.
  • Bring snacks like fruits, veggies, or gluten-free bars.
  • Know where cool resting areas are located.

If cooling down accommodations are not available, get there early to find a place in the shade, or in the case of bleachers, bring a more comfortable chair, umbrella, and misting fan.

Listen to the body

  • Listen to the body when engaged in activities, don’t try to push through where you don’t feel comfortable.
  • Take breaks
  • The goal is to ensure comfort during the activity, as being uncomfortable can exacerbate symptoms.

Self-care

The body needs thorough rest after a long day in the sun. It is recommended to ice any areas where pain presents to decrease inflammation and neuroplasticity and help with any symptoms of itching, pressure, numbness, or pins and needles.

  • Start with icing for three minutes, take the ice off and see how it feels.
  • If the area feels better, continue icing for a full ten minutes.
  • Remove the ice if irritation occurs or do not feel a difference.

Foods

Watching what you eat can be difficult at summer events. Specific foods like bread, gluten, and high-sugar products can cause symptoms.
