Continuum of Purpose: Fostering a Meaningful Life | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
The whole sense of purpose is bigger than self. When you have a purpose, it has a broader reach, is self-fulfilling, and gives you a meaningful and purposeful life.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The purpose of learning is about learners being prepared for their future and reaching their fullest potential as lifelong learners. This means that they have a voice with the confidence to express their ideas and opinions so they are heard and taken into account in any situation.

Growing a Personalized Culture of Learning

Growing a Personalized Culture of Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Patrick Riley, Cognitive Coach for kid-FRIENDLY grant in Kentucky, uses the metaphor of planting seeds and growing a culture of learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Patrick tells his story as a cognitive coach in Kentucky where he has planted seeds of personalized learning and has grown a safety net for his Teacher Leaders for them to thrive and grow in a personalized learning environment.

Here is one story that he shares about a special 7th grade teacher, her learners and how the PL seed has grown:

"For Ms. Morris and her learners, the learning taking place in this seventh grade classroom was an amalgamation of learner-centered, curiosity-provoking activities, galvanized in the fires of learner passions, that transcended even the most stubborn traces of teenage apathy. In essence, this Learner-Centered Environment was the maturation, the development of one tiny seed planted in the fall of 2014. Are Schools Designed to Help Children Learn? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Do you know what the space invaders are in school? This post shows you how to identify them and remove them so you focus on learners and learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
Chris Watkins, an independent consultant and leading authority on learning in the UK and former reader at The Institute of Education, London Centre for Leadership in Learning has helped us understand how to personalize learning by focusing on the learner first. He launched a new site, http://chriswatkins.net, where he uploaded over 150 of his articles, handouts, presentations and publications on learning. Watkins’ Key Issues http://chriswatkins.net/key-issues/ shows that learning is rarely a focus on classroom life. He identified three sources he calls “space invaders” that take up the space as teaching, performance and work instead of what they should be focusing on: LEARNING.

Learner Voice Demonstrates Commitment to Building Agency

Learner Voice Demonstrates Commitment to Building Agency | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

This is Part 4 in the 6-part Collaborative Blog Series on Learner Agency with the Institute for Personalized Learning.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Giving learners voice encourages them to participate in and eventually to own and drive their learning. This means a complete shift from the traditional approach of teaching compliance that develops a “learned helplessness” to encouraging voice where there is authenticity in the learning.

Guest Post: 5 Shifts to Learner Roles in a Personalized Learning Environment | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Introducing the collaborative blog series on Learner Agency by Personalize Learning, LLC and The Institute for Personalized Learning.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Over the next few months, we will be engaging with the Institute for Personalized Learning in a series of joint posts on Learner Agency. Learner agency often gets left out of conversations on education transformation and even conversations about personalized learning. Yet it is a critical component in any attempt to personalize the learning experience with learners.

To introduce our readers to the Institute, we would like to share a link to one of their previous posts, 5 Shifts to Learner Roles in a Personalized Learning Environment. The post examines several ways in which learners and learning play different and expanded roles in an environment where the goal is to prepare learners for a future in which continuous learning and the ability to learn independently are keys to life and career success.

What if students controlled their own learning? Peter Hutton

This talk was given at a local TEDx event in Melbourne,  produced independently of the TED Conferences.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Discover through this TedTalk from Peter Hutton how learners take control and ownership to their learning . Peter is a school principal with a radical solution, no school bell, no school levels, staff selection and curriculum is even decided by students. Result? No bullying, collaboration, innovation in school dynamics. As Principal of Templestowe College he developed an educational model that allows learners to individualize their education and share control in the running of the school.

Debra Walker's curator insight, August 20, 2015 3:34 PM

I was fortunate in primary and secondary school.  I had empassioned teachers and administrators, and a family that supported and fostered my curiosity and a healthy respect for learning.  Not all have that fortune.

Antonia Rudenstine's curator insight, September 23, 2015 8:54 AM

Peter Hutton desgined and runs a school in which students make the most important decisions about their learning: what to study, when and with whom. There are no grade levels, no "periods" in the day, and the staff is co-hired with students. It's been incredibly successful!

Personalize Learning: Focus on the Learner Not Technology

Personalize Learning: Focus on the Learner Not Technology | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
In a personalized learning environment, learners actively participate in their learning. They have a voice in what they are learning based on how they learn best. Learners have a choice in how they demonstrate what they know, what paths they take to learn, and provide evidence of their learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
In a personalized learning environment, the teacher is the guide on the learner's personal journey. When learners have choices to interact with the content and discuss what they watched, read, and learned, they are actively participating in learning. Encouraging learner voice and choice is the key difference to the other terms: differentiation and individualization. When learners have a voice in how they learn and a choice in how they engage with content and express what they know, they are more motivated to want to learn and own their learning.

The system needs to change from focusing on performance and tests to rethinking the design of teaching and learning around how learners learn best.

Which Personalized Learning Framework is Best For You and Your School? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Chris Liang-Vergara shared out several personalized learning frameworks including Personalize Learning, LLC's, The Institute @ CESA#1, Montessori, CAST and others. Here is how he described the Personalize Learning framework:

What’s their framework or frameworks? Their framework merges UDL, learner voice and choice, creative environments, intrinsic motivation, and educational technology in a cohesive approach that builds off of learner profiles.

Why would I use this framework over others? Kathleen and Barbara pull apart personalized, differentiated, and individualized learning in very articulate ways that will help you and your team be more clear in your communications. Their incorporation of UDL and learner voice and choice will also help you understand personalized learning in a very concrete, classroom-applicable manner.

The Nellie Mae Education Foundation is working to reshape public education to better prepare all students for the future.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The Nellie Mae Education Foundation envisions an education system where learning transcends the traditional school calendar and setting. They envision a system where learners progress based upon mastery of a skill or topic, rather than time spent in a classroom.

And hey - learners shouldn't be bored in the classroom. Let's reshape our system so that learning is personalized, and learners have a true voice in their education.

Who's Framed Personalized Learning?

Who's Framed Personalized Learning? | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Why personalized learning is all about the learner, starting with the learner. It's time to frame it around the stories where learners are owning and driving their learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:
Many teachers that partner with their learners and change how they teach told us they would never go back to traditional teaching. So we decided to ask a few of our friends what they think about framing personalized learning

"Personalized learning primarily involves changing the role of a child from a passive-oriented student to an active-oriented learner. Any process, practice, system or initiative which labels itself 'personalized,' but does not change the role of the learner to have more voice and choice in their own learning isn't fully personalized.  Much of what is being categorized as personalized learning today involves technology integration and enhancements in the role of the teacher, without necessarily empowering the learner to discover, follow and cultivate their own passions and take an ever-increasing role for the privilege and responsibility of learning."  - See more at: http://www.personalizelearning.com/2014/08/whos-framed-personalized-learning.html#sthash.MkbRFiBY.dpuf

PERSONALIZED LEARNING STARTS WITH THE LEARNER, NOT TECHNOLOGY | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Personalized Learning is a controversial term that means different things to different people depending on where and how it is referenced. Some believe it is about promoting programs or tools that per
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Both of us are advocates for the use of technology to support instruction and to help learners gain independent learning skills. For years, as coaches consulting on technology integration, we observed classrooms where technology sat idle or to present lessons using new tools but the same way they teach: teacher-directed. The current system seems to encourage the use of technology for traditional teacher-directed methods.

The system needs to change from focusing on problems to rethinking the design of teaching and learning around how learners learn best. Personalized learning starts with the learner, not the technology!

If students re-imagined school, this is what it could look like! | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
During an INTERalliance Career Camp, students re-imagine the very system in which they currently learn.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

What could an innovative learning system look like through the eyes of 20 current high school learners?

Discover the insights these learners had when re-imagining learning structures. Here are just 2 out  of 11 insights these learners had:

Put students in charge of their own learning. While the teams recognized the importance of teachers, guidance counselors, parents and guardians, they wanted to offer learners more control over their education experience. In their new systems, learners would have the opportunity to build individual schedules and explore interests.

Tailor learning to students’ interests. One team specifically talked about learning different subjects through their own interests. For example, if a student really likes extreme sports, such as skydiving, he could study math, physics or meteorology through those activities. This would make learning more fun and relevant in their re-imagined system.

Learning Can and Should be Natural and Engaging

Learning Can and Should be Natural and Engaging | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Dr. Jackie Gerstein explains why that it is every educator's responsibility to ensure that teaching strategies match learning needs of each learner.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Jackie shares some important pointers in this guest post about guiding learning and the importance of context when learning.

The more you can apply what you're learning to your every day, the more it'll stick in your head. The reason is simple. When you're learning by doing, you're implementing everything that makes our memory work. When you're able to connect what you're learning with a real world task, that forms the bonds in your brain, and subsequently the skills you're learning will stick around.

We learn best when we have context, and that applies to new skills as much as it does random facts in school. That's why something like the transfer of learning is helpful when you’re learning a new skill. This means you're applying your new skills in your day to day life in a context that matters.
