Understanding Podemos (1/3): 15-M & counter-politics - Left Flank | real utopias | Scoop.it
What Podemos’s present success reveals is the breakdown, the crisis or the collapse (choose the term you prefer) of the Spanish party system. Because in reality the Transition regime is sinking like the Titanic and Podemos is merely the iceberg that caused this. So as soon as the cock crowed on 25-M, all the captains aboard began to jump ship: firstly [PSOE leader] Rubalcaba, then the King, later [the Catalan conservative] Durán, … It is a regime crisis because its previous dominant coalition, until now formed by an imperfect three-party set (PSOE, PP and [regional nationalists]), has lost the ability to impose its cultural hegemony.

People and politics: ordinary workers stand no chance of becoming an MP - The Guardian

People and politics: ordinary workers stand no chance of becoming an MP - The Guardian | real utopias | Scoop.it

Carole Cadwalladr is absolutely right when she points out what is basically wrong with our political establishment. The radical left-wing party Podemos ("We Can") of Spain, which became the sensation of the European Parliament elections after winning a stunning five seats and 1.2 million votes on its first try, accepted millions of Euros from Hugo Chávez's repressive socialist regime in Venezuela, money on which it never paid requisite taxes.

Joschka Fischer asks why so many Europeans are turning to an ideology that has meant only war and destruction. - Project Syndicate | real utopias | Scoop.it

BERLIN – Europe is made up of its nations, and has been for hundreds of years. That is what makes the continent’s unification such a difficult political task, even today. But nationalism is not Europe’s principle of construction; on the contrary, it has been, and remains, Europe’s principle of deconstruction. That is the main lesson to be drawn from the dramatic gains made by anti-European populist parties in last weekend’s European Parliament election.

A Clear, Historical but Still Not Decisive SYRIZA Victory - Dissident Voice | real utopias | Scoop.it

The Greek EU elections have produced what is clearly a historical result, not only for Greece but for the European Union as well. SYRIZA won by a clear margin of almost 4% (3.8% to be more precise), scoring 26.5% against 22.7% of ND, the governing right party. Moreover, in the municipal and regional elections SYRIZA gained an impressive victory in Attica district with Rena Dourou, though it failed to elect Sakellaridis in Athens, who lost by a small margin to Kaminis.

Political parties must be reformed: they are the best way to deliver democracy - The Guardian | real utopias | Scoop.it

Developing a more meaningful relationship with the 3 million working men and women who are members of the trade unions that sit inside the Labour family will give our party a head start in addressing this. It will open up our party and give working people a real choice and voice as individuals inside Labour. What Ed's package of party reforms will do is to update a party architecture constructed in the 20th century to make it fit for the 21st, better embedding our party in every community.

The European Left: An Interview with Leo Panitch | Jacobin | real utopias | Scoop.it

So when that challenge came out of the growing mobilization of the 1960s and the crisis of the 1970s, from the left inside Social Democracy, the establishment of those parties had as much right as the left, maybe more, to deny that their tradition was a socialist one. The left was always saying that the party needed to return to what it had stood for. But the right could accurately say that the tradition of the party was class harmony. Furthermore they could argue that what the left was proposing the capitalists would not play with.
