Insects show how DNA mistakes become evolutionary innovation

Insects show how DNA mistakes become evolutionary innovation | Science News | Scoop.it

One of the more difficult aspects of evolution for some people to swallow is the notion that random copying errors in DNA can add up to anything useful. In two recently published projects, however, scientists show how typos can indeed lead to improvements. In numerous species of insects, they document the DNA errors that led to changes that are not only beneficial but also brilliant.

Aging Is Recorded in Our Genes

Aging Is Recorded in Our Genes | Science News | Scoop.it

Recent research suggests that more subtle chemical changes to our DNA occur as we age. Now, a comparison of the DNA of a newborn baby with that of a centenarian shows that the scope of these changes can be dramatic, and they may help explain why our risk of cancer and other diseases increases as we get older.

Phosphorus Essential for Human DNA -- Rare in our Solar System and May have been Non-Existent on Early Earth

Phosphorus Essential for Human DNA -- Rare in our Solar System and May have been Non-Existent on Early Earth | Science News | Scoop.it

Over 13 billion years ago at least one of the domains of life may have begun in nebular clouds. If restricted to the Milky Way, which is 13.6 billion years old, the first chemical combinations would have had billions of years to become a self-replicating organism with a DNA genome long before the existence of Earth.

Exercise Changes How Genes Work

Exercise Changes How Genes Work | Science News | Scoop.it

A study of over 12,000 men and women reveals that a brisk daily walk can change how the DNA your mother and father gave you affects your body, particularly the 32 genes that have been linked to a person's body mass index, or BMI, a ratio of height and weight used to determine if someone is obese. After indexing how many variants of the weight-gain genes each person in the study had, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health concluded that "for every genetic variant, the effect on BMI was to increase it by 0.13 kg/m2."

Men on your mind: Male DNA in women's brains

Men on your mind: Male DNA in women's brains | Science News | Scoop.it

Ever feel like your sons are always on your mind? Actually, it might be more true that you think – researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have found traces of male DNA in women’s brains, which seems to come from cells from a baby boy crossing the blood-brain barrier during pregnancy. This is known as microchimerism, and according to the researchers, this is the first description of male microchimerism in the female human brain.

A DNA-based molecular motor that can navigate a network of tracks

Here, we report a synthetic DNA-based system that integrates long-range transport and information processing. We show that the path of a motor through a network of tracks containing four possible routes can be programmed using instructions that are added externally or carried by the motor itself.

Dark matter. It’s mysterious. And the term has a nice ring to it. No surprise then, that the phrase is often co-opted in fields other than physics. Biology is no exception.

Human Genome Contains Pieces of DNA From Ancient Dinosaur Era Viruses

More than 90% of every mammal's genome has no known function. This part of genetic material is sometimes called "dark matter." It contains pieces of DNA from ancient viruses. There are thought to be thousands of these endogenous retroviruses integrated into human DNA and some of them can be traced as far back as the dinosaur era.
