Lewis Mitchell is a a postdoctoral researcher in mathematics and climate. Broadly, he is interested in the messy interface between the "real" world and the more abstract world of mathematics. More specifically, his research is focused in the areas of numerical weather prediction (NWP) and data assimilation, which use techniques from many areas of applied mathematics.

By turning algorithms loose on gun and ammunition purchasing trends, tragedies like those at Newton, Aurora and Virginia Tech could be prevented, according to Marc Parrish who works in the data industry: "As someone who deals daily with the deluge of data currently inundating the marketing world, I can say based on experience that this kind of record-keeping would be an inconsequential task to set up, and the data science to analyze it trivial. Massive efforts are going into far smaller things, such as which TV program is most engaging for soap buyers who have DVRs, and which pitcher/batter combinations lead to better baseball."

A series of new apps allows parents to chart the development of their newborn baby by recording every diaper change, burp and sniffle. Taken together, this data may give parents a better view of how their child is progressing and what patterns emerge along the way.

Big Data is watching you. And it's big business. Credit card companies, for instance, are selling the data about what you're consuming. "Trillions" argues that we can't just design devices that help us to live better using data; rather, we have to design an entire living environment where those devices communicate with each other and with us. Only by building this interoperable network of humans and computers will we finally be able to exploit the massive potential of Big Data, and of ourselves.
