Physicists extend special relativity beyond the speed of light

Physicists extend special relativity beyond the speed of light | Science News | Scoop.it
Now two physicists – James Hill and Barry Cox from the University of Adelaide in Australia – have shown that Einstein's theory of special relativity can be logically extended to allow for faster-than-light motion. They're quick to point out that their finding in no way contradicts the original theory, but simply provides a new aspect of it.

Over 80,000 Einstein documents going online

Over 80,000 Einstein documents going online | Science News | Scoop.it

Albert Einstein’s online presence is taking a huge step forward, with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem moving to put thousands of his documents online. A limited sample of the physicist’s papers had previously been available, but with the backing of the foundation that helped put Issac Newton’s work on the web, over 80,000 Einsteinian documents will be going online. In the first stage of the project, 2,000 high-resolution images were released.

Physicists continue work to abolish time as fourth dimension of space | Science News | Scoop.it

In a new study, Sorli and Fiscaletti have shown that two phenomena of special relativity - time dilation and length contraction - can be better described within the framework of a 3D space with time as the quantity used to measure change (i.e., photon motion) in this space.

Freedom and physics

Freedom and physics | Science News | Scoop.it

For all the progress physics has made in the last 100 or so years, it has not provided an answer to the free will question. Even quantum indeterminacy does not entirely kill off determinism. Quantum effects take place at tiny scales and whether they can affect the macroscopic world in a meaningful way is debatable.

And as Conway has pointed out, there's always the possibility that we live in a "second time around Universe". The first time around, quantum events may have been random and peoples' choices may have been free, but if we live in a replay, then everything happens in a totally determined fashion. "In the end a completely deterministic world is not incompatible with quantum mechanics," says Zeilinger. "I would say either way is basically speculation, the claim that things are deterministic is speculation and the rest too. This simply is a wide open question."

Oh Albert. Did you get it wrong? In 2011, physics was shaken by an experiment which said the Universe's speed limit, enshrined by Einstein in his 1905 theory of special relativity, could be broken.

Einstein: The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious....

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed. It was the experience of mystery -- even if mixed with fear -- that engendered religion. A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty, which only in their most primitive forms are accessible to our minds: it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute true religiosity. In this sense, and only this sense, I am a deeply religious man... I am satisfied with the mystery of life's eternity and with a knowledge, a sense, of the marvelous structure of existence -- as well as the humble attempt to understand even a tiny portion of the Reason that manifests itself in nature." ~ Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein: Dreamer & Lover, Say His Manuscripts

Albert Einstein: Dreamer & Lover, Say His Manuscripts | Science News | Scoop.it

Despite his über-human status as a genius, the new documents demonstrate that Einstein lived as many of us live, replete with love trials and speculative political solutions. Included in the papers are "24 love letters the scientist wrote to his cousin, Elsa Einstein, with whom he conducted an affair for several years before finally divorcing his first wife, Mileva Maric, and remarrying in 1919." Einstein also proposed a secret council of Jews and Arabs to achieve peace in the region. The council would consist of a physician, a jurist, a trade unionist and a cleric from either side and hold weekly meetings.

Can We Go the Speed of Light? (The Principle of Relativity)

Einstein's classic thought experiment involves sitting on a train travelling at the speed of light. If you hold a mirror in front of your face, will you see your reflection in a mirror? How could light from your face reach the mirror if the mirror is travelling away from you? But it would be a pretty spooky train if you couldn't see your reflection so Einstein felt this solution wasn't realistic. On the other hand if you could see your reflection, it would mean light was travelling at the speed of light inside the train. But that meant the same light observed from outside the train would be going twice the speed of light. This again seems inconsistent. So Einstein resolved that you must see your reflection but that light must travel at the same speed inside and outside the train. The only way this is possible is if space and time are perceived differently by observers inside and outside the train.
