Visionary Images: The Lost Fractals of Benoît Mandelbrot

Visionary Images: The Lost Fractals of Benoît Mandelbrot | Science News | Scoop.it

In 2008, fascinated by the interplay between imagery and scientific investigation, art historian Nina Samuel spent two weeks interviewing Mandelbrot in his Cambridge, Massachusetts home. After Mandelbrot passed away in 2010, she was allowed entry to his office, collecting some 300 printouts, sketches and notebook scribbles now on display in The Islands of Benoît Mandelbrot: Fractals, Chaos, and the Materiality of Thinking, an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan.

"There is such an organic quality to these images," said Samuel. "These are the images the scientists used when they were working, and not what was found on magazine covers or popularized in screensavers."

[A MUST SEE VIDEO] Halo Films Choice Point Showreel

Choice Point provides a scientific, self-help and human story platform to help people transform their lives for the better while at the same time showing them how to contribute to transforming the world in beneficial ways. Its mission is to make an impact at the individual level, which will in turn help to transform the world at a global level. It is based on the theory that by aligning with purpose, we each can help to bring the world into better alignment for a positive, peaceful future in which we can more easily solve the problems that currently beset the world

Tony Franciskato's comment, May 29, 2012 9:07 AM
I love the idea of aligning with a purpose but of course I have questions when I hear certain things like… "What does it mean to 'Transcend self interest'?" It is like thinking it necessary to "moving beyond" the need to have blood coursing through my veins. "Creating relationships where everyone is getting richer" sounds like a situation where people trade goods and services freely and exchange value for value. What a great idea! It could be like a free market where men trade without taking advantage or being taken advantage of. Seems if men understood self interest as something not needing transcendence but needing acceptance as a fact of life the rest may follow.
Sakis Koukouvis's comment, May 29, 2012 10:09 AM
Thank you Tony Franciskato. I agree that these phrases are mere a positive thinking and not so a practical solution for a daily life. But we need inspiration to overcome our self-interest and I believe that this video is opening that "door".

The man who hand-draws mathematical fractals - New APPS: Art, Politics, Philosophy, Science

The man who hand-draws mathematical fractals - New APPS: Art, Politics, Philosophy, Science | Science News | Scoop.it

One of the subjects I work with, JP, has acquired synesthesia and acquired savant syndrome. This happened as a result of a brutal assault in 2002, during which he was kicked and hit on the head. He was subsequently diagnosed with a bleeding kidney and an unspecified head injury. What the doctors didn't know was that JP no longer saw the world the way he used to. Objects suddenly did not have smooth boundaries. Things no longer moved smoothly. Motion took place in picture frames. It looked like someone paused and unpaused the flow of the world very rapidly. Even more amazing: JP was suddenly able to see vivid fractal images of objects with a fractal structure (such as, broccoli).
