Reality: Is matter real?

Reality: Is matter real? | Science News | Scoop.it

NOTHING seems more real than the world of everyday objects, but things are not as they seem. A set of relatively simple experiments reveals enormous holes is our intuitive understanding of physical reality. Trying to explain what goes on leads to some very peculiar and often highly surprising theories of the world around us.

The Three-Fold Path of Virtual Reality

The Three-Fold Path of Virtual Reality | Science News | Scoop.it

The simulation assumption is ancient, though, and shows how integrated this transcendent view of virtual reality is with spiritual beliefs, especially Gnostic and Eastern religious beliefs. The Hindus called virtual reality, Maya, and believed that it, too, had internal, external, and transcendent qualities. Maya was a veil of consciousness between Brahman and Atman (dual aspects of the unitary godhead), as well as the projected external world. So, are current virtual reality technologies just tools to discover and transcend the programmed reality?

The power of perceptions: Imagining the reality you want

The power of perceptions: Imagining the reality you want | Science News | Scoop.it

"A human being is a deciding being," Viktor Frankl wrote in his 1946 book, "Man's Search for Meaning," which sold more than 10 million copies. "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

Where is my mind? Is the materialistic model of reality incorrect?

Where is my mind? Is the materialistic model of reality incorrect? | Science News | Scoop.it

That’s probably enough for one day, but just to take this one step further; we know that what we see is not the world. The image we see is a mental construction of the world, and psychology has identified numerous examples of how we each see the world a little differently. An obvious example is colour-blindedness. Since the brain is constructing the world we see around us, and if we assume that the neural code and the image are different things… where is reality?

Forget everything you know about the world and how it looks. Everything you have ever seen, everything you have ever heard, even everything you have ever felt and smelt, is not real. It’s all just pretend.

The Reality of Multidimensionality | Create and Share

The Reality of Multidimensionality | Create and Share | Science News | Scoop.it
We perceive Reality through our senses which convince us that the way in which we experience the world around us is exactly the way it exists. The true nature of Reality, however, is not experienced through this superficial perception of the world.

Hollywood, Inception, and the Cinematic Dream State

Hollywood, Inception, and the Cinematic Dream State | Science News | Scoop.it

Interview with Jason Silva by Frank Rose

Maybe that was what got us talking about Inception, Christopher Nolan’s metaphysical action flick, which came out two years ago and won’t let go. From there it was inevitable that we’d slide into The Matrix, eXistenZ, and other movies that seek to limn the parameters of reality. Eventually we had to go, but we ended up continuing the conversation online. What follows is an edited transcript in which we question everything, including those bricks on the wall.

Fiction on the brain

Fiction on the brain | Science News | Scoop.it

When we read a novel, the same areas of the brain activate as those that light up when we encounter something similar in the real world. Smell a lilac, or read about the scent of lilacs — it’s pretty much all the same to our brains.

William Gibson on real vs. virtual and singularity

William Gibson on real vs. virtual and singularity | Science News | Scoop.it

The author takes a moment to debunk “singularity” — the theory that man and machine will eventually merge in some kind of climax — calling it “the geek rapture.” In Gibson’s opinion, the biggest changes will sneak into our lives gradually, the way Walkmans morphed into iPods, then iPhones. “There’s not going to be any ‘future,’ because things are changing too quickly,” he says. “It’s just going to be . . . stranger and stranger, and as it happens to you, you will be in the present moment, and it will be weird.”
