Gut Bacteria Regulate Happiness

Gut Bacteria Regulate Happiness | Science News | Scoop.it
APC scientists have shown that brain levels of serotonin, the ‘happy hormone’ are regulated by the amount of bacteria in the gut during early life.
Gina Stepp's comment, June 12, 2012 11:08 PM
Interesting . . . especially considering that gut regulation and other emotion-related processes are affected by early-life bonding (attachment . . . relationships). You can't separate bodily health from mental health in the end.

Happy adolescents 'likely to have higher income' as adults

Research finds link between upbeat personalities and earnings...

Articles about PSYCHOLOGY http://www.scoop.it/t/science-news?tag=psychology

Devon Clarke's curator insight, October 26, 2014 2:39 PM

Healthy brain development in children deals with a lot of factors, but happiness is one key thing to leading a child to be successful. In this article it describes how happy adolescents tend to become more successful when they are older and obtain higher wages (Doward & Graaf, 2012). I found this article to link well to an academic journal looking at if the sensitivity of parents led to having kind children  (Newton & Laible, 2014, p. 1808). It concluded that yes kind parenting skills do lead to having children who are more competent apposed to parents that are not as kind  (Newton & Laible, 2014, p. 1812). I think this academic journal links well to this article because it gives the realization that a child's happiness can directly related to their parents and how they are treated. This article also links well to Exploring Psychology in Modules in module 10 talking about different parenting styles (Myers & Myers, 2008, p. 149). The parenting style that they suggest to be the most effective for a child's self-esteem and social competences are those who are authoritative parents (Myers & Myers, 2008, p. 149). As Oswelt stated in Benefits of High Healthy Self-Esteem children who have higher self-esteems tend to be happier and have good relationships with friends (Oswelt, n.d.). It is important to make sure that a child has positive role models to make sure their happiness comes first. This article seemed to use good scientific reasoning giving good examples throughout the article (Doward & Graaf, 2012). The two publishers of the article also had good backgrounds and sources for where they got their information. One diverse group that this article has left out children who don't grow up in a healthy stable home environment. If a child is in an unstable setting it could lead to the possibility of a depressed child.

The Complex Relationship Between Happiness and Motivation

The Complex Relationship Between Happiness and Motivation | Science News | Scoop.it
Can too much happiness hurt motivation? Can too much motivation hurt happiness? How can we find a balance between happiness and motivation?

I guess it depends on your definition of happiness. If you define happiness as being fully satisfied and content with everything in your life, then there would never be anything you’re motivated to change.

Motivation implies a willingness to make something better. But if you’re happy with everything, then there is nothing you want to make better because everything is already fine the way it is.

Rethinking Emotion in the Lab

Rethinking Emotion in the Lab | Science News | Scoop.it

LeDoux writes: “Consciousness and feelings are topics that are best studied in humans. Research on the neural basis of feelings in humans is in its infancy. We will never know what an animal feels. But if we can find neural correlates of conscious feelings in humans (and distinguish them from correlates of unconscious emotional computations in survival circuits), and show that similar correlates exists in homologous brain regions in animals, then some basis for speculating about animal feelings and their nature would exist.”
