5 Major Social Media Marketing Mistakes And How To Overcome Them

5 Major Social Media Marketing Mistakes And How To Overcome Them | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
What marketing mistakes are keeping you from achieving your social media marketing goals? Check out these common but major social media marketing mistakes and how exactly you can overcome them.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Social Media Is Conversation Not Lectures

Social Media is PULL marketing. Pull marketing needs time to establish a relationship. Time to talk and be heard. That's why my favorite social media marketing mistake is #1 -on Forbes list of five common social mistakes - not listening to your audience.

Digital Listening Is Different
Digital listening is different than listening to someone while having a conversation. Digital listening requires social rewards, examples, and a clear ask. Creating a clear ask, defining what you want to happen and why strays into Forbes second mistake - no clear objectives.

Confusion = Don't Buy, Engage, Contribute

Without objective confusion rules. If you don't know why you're doing, saying, or asking something how can the digital receiver possibly know? Confused customers do many things buying is never one of them.

Confusion Is Easy, Clarity Hard
During an almost twenty year career as a digital marketer, I built my first e-commerce website in 1999, clarity is the easiest sin. Think your marketing, motives, and campaigns are clear as a ringing bell on a cold morning in the Himalayas? Think again.

Don't Talk To Yourself About Yourself

All digital marketing is in danger of 1. talking to itself about itself and 2. not listening. Listening isn't easy. Listening is at least twice as hard as talking and digital listening is at least twice as hard as real-life listening or conversational listening where nonverbal clues can help bring you back around can help stop our tendency to talk to ourselves about ourselves.

Favorite Digital Listening Tactics

Here are a few digital listening tactics we recommend:

  • Social Rewards - Features and social media shares of user-generated content is a great way to show you listen.
  • Loyalty Programs - Points, badges, and other social honors work when the rules are clear, the game fair, and rewards meaningful (social reward is more lasting than material).
  • Responses - Responding to blog comments, blogging about great questions and sharing on social media values the comment, review, or question.
  • Profiles - Their content on your site is our favorite "listening" tactic because having users create content encourages shares and reduces your content creation burden/need.

Those are our initial pre-coffee reactions. More at Curagami.com soon.

The $240,000 Nissan Rogue Social Marketing Event That Didn't Happen- Curagami

The $240,000 Nissan Rogue Social Marketing Event That Didn't Happen- Curagami | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

The day a big company understands social media marketing it may be time to buy water and canned goods and get in the basement. The end of days is near.

As this post shares, doesn't look like the end of days is near based on how TONE DEAF Nissan was to a cool social marketing idea, and idea that would have sold $240,000 in cars and costs...well NOTING.

We may NEVER need water and canned goods...sadly.

Wrote this piece almost a year ago and it quickly beccame a "Most Popular ScentTrail" with lots of great comments and over 1100 views. Most of it holds up. There is a reference to LiveStrong and Lance Armstrong that is dated, but main ideas seem more right than wrong.

Social Media Marketing's Party Has Started!

Social Media Marketing's Party Has Started! | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Tackling a social media marketing plan is a bit like eating an elephant - you gotta do it just one bite at a time.

Marty Note
Great starter advice here such as:

Steer clear of divisive topics. Sharing strong opinions on sensitive topics – from politics to parenting – can alienate potential customers. Especially if they have nothing to do with your business, keep opinions away from your social media.

Share and share alike. If you want to grow your network, take the time to provide feedback to people you network with. Share comments on posts in Google+ circles, “like” things on Facebook, take the time to retweet. Oftentimes people in your community will respond in kind.

Add insight. Providing tips or insight to your network gives your business credibility. Take the time to share information that your customers may value.

Master the #hashtag.

If you haven't come to the realization social media IS your business never too late to get with the program. Get started with social media.

How to Setup Your Brand New Pinterest Business Page | Jeffbullas's Blog

How to Setup Your Brand New Pinterest Business Page | Jeffbullas's Blog | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
Pinterest is booming. The site grew to 26.7 million unique visitors last month. This rapid growth has drawn businesses, especially retailers, to expand their presence on the site. Pinterest has just announced Pinterest pages for business.

My, those folks over at Pinterest have been busy! In the space of a few short weeks, users have been surprised by 3 new rollouts – verification of Pinterest accounts, the introduction of secret boards and now, the ability to create business pages.

So what does this new update mean for business owners? After all, it was not too long ago that Pinterest was warning us about self-promotion and commercial usage was downright prohibited.
Nevertheless, thousands of businesses have flocked to Pinterest since its inception in 2009 to create accounts and drive brand awareness in the hope of boosting sales.

Perhaps Pinterest has finally acknowledged that it’s time to woo the business community right before the crucial holiday season? Or maybe it’s testing the water for its monetization plans?...

[This is a positive development for marketers with one caveat. Watch for the terms of reference. Pinterest owns all material posted; not always the right situation for every business. ~ Jeff]
