Found this a fascinating read. We thought about hiring a "scrapper" at Curagami. We weren't sure 1. who was reputable (scraping can show up as an attack if you aren't careful) and 2. how to engage those who we could trust to help. This post answers both those questions though some additional research on vendors is probably called for as the post has a salesy point of view.

I almost forgot one of my rules (lol). Stores help any website, brand or idea get better faster. There are things you learn creating a store our #startup http://www.curagami.com can't teach.

We have over 30 years of ecommerce experience and creating one Shopify store will, over the course of the 2 - 4 days it takes, teach you half of what we know.

What Creating A Store Teaches Startups


* Content and copy writing.

* Webdesign.

* Product categorization, planning and business intelligence (#BI). 

* Social Media.
* Thinking about THEM (your customers).

* Learning to test & validate assumptions.
* Provides a new dimension for B2B and B2C products, companies and tools.

The new "perspective" the last bullet mentions is the gold. Getting out of your head and testing assumptions and ideas IRL (In Real Life) is more valuable than every brainstorm we've ever had.

Brainstorms and past experience create an assumption framework. Creating a store pushing assumptions into the deep end of the pool and they learn to swim fast or drown

Competitive Advantage
We work around 6 startups and NONE of them have or are likely to follow my advice to create store. Every startup here in Durham thinks they are selling a THING.

I've learned the hard way the first thing we startups sell is OURSELVES (you & people on your team). Next thing you sell is money making competency. AT&T and IBM will start jointly offering services designed to help municipalities, utility companies and other organizations use "Internet of things" technologies to better manage their infrastructure.


"There is a huge amount of growth of the things that are connected" to networks, said Michael Curry, IBM vice president of product

management. "When you have that many things connected in, you have a big data problem. Companies want to be able to take that data and use it to optimize operations and predict failures."


IBM estimates that there will be over 18 billion connected devices in the world by 2022. Examples of connected devices include mobile phones and sensors.


For this work, IBM's software division will work with AT&T's Advanced Solution unit. AT&T will provide network connectivity and IBM will provide the software and integration.


The two companies plan to help organizations build out systems that can collect data, wirelessly, from many remote end-nodes, an approach increasingly being called "The Internet of things" in the industry. The data can be analyzed and monitored, as well as fed to mobile devices for personnel in the field.


The initial targets for the service will be municipalities, mid-size utility companies and transportation companies, though any sort of organization could benefit from remote monitoring should consider IBM and AT&T's assistance, Curry said.


Cities could use this approach to better and control manage traffic. Utility companies could more closely monitor their customers' energy usage. Transportation companies could better manage their fleets of vehicles.

Yeah Internet of Things going to be HUGE trend with all kinds of cool startup opportunities. Nest.com already sold to Google for billions and they won't be the last.
