Trying Creates More Love Than Success: Pixar's 22 Rules to Phenomenal Storytelling

Pixar's 22 Rules to Phenomenal Storytelling, originally tweeted by Emma Coats.

Via José Carlos
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird's Secret Implication = Storytelling
It feels like we are about to enter a storytelling renaissance across many media (video, web copy, infographics) because the secret implication o f Google's many algorithm changes is things that keep people on your site are GOOD.

Things that drive people from your site are BAD. Ever know anyone to leave in the middle of a great story? These days we are all so phone-centric breaking one spell with another is key.

Here is a great deck sharing Pixar's storytelling secrets such as:

* You admire characters more for their trying than their success.
* Audience Love different things than writers do.

* Simplify. Focus. Combine (and learn to love giving stuff up).

* What is your character GREAT AT? Now challenge them with the opposite of what they are great at.
* Endings are HARD, so figure it out before the middle.

* Finish your story, let go move on, do better next time.

That last line about letting go speaks to not "Sistine Chapeling", or seeking a false perfection. Send your website out into the world to grow up since your products, content and marketing can only become great by failing a little.

People Marketing: How I Learned To Love People - Curagami

People Marketing: How I Learned To Love People - Curagami | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

People Marketing shares hard won tips, ideas and stories about loving, curating, listening to your people to create winning online marketing.

We included this link in our Startups Revoluiton Scoop.it because startups are so WIDGET focused they forget PEOPLE provide the context and emotional connection needed to SELL. It is understandable that YOU love your widget, but your customers love THEMSELVES much more.

Creating "like me" moments mean your "product" becomes a movement your customers want to join. This journey from YOU and THEM (customers) to WE is the most important journey every website and all marketing is on whether the creators know it or not.

10 Truths of Simply Selling [Slidedeck] | Tactical Sales

10 Truths of Simply Selling [Slidedeck] | Tactical Sales | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
It’s time we take a step back, away from all of the ideas and best practices of sales and the art that is selling and consider what the simple, indisputable truths are of selling.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

A tad "old school" but helpful selling tips such as:

#1 Initiating Contact

#2 Quick Qualification

#3 Demonstrate Your Offer

etc.

There are 10 similar "sales 101" tips. P&G taught me an excellent format to tell a sales story (back in the day lol):

Summarize The Situation (set up your pitch factually)
State The Idea (clear, short, punchy)
Explain How It Works (use examples and made to stick analogies)
Share Benefits (only two benefits make or save money)

We BUY with EMOTION and that format is organized around logic, but skillful salespeople know how to weave that format into what feels like a spontaneous and relevant story.

One of my favorite quotes is the old Indian saying:

Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.

Use the P&G format to organize but then riff a story, follow up with relevant links and social media to "simply sell" today.

Business Storytelling: 5 Mistakes Most Storytellers Make

The purpose of this presentation is to list 5 typical mistakes people make when sharing stories in business settings.

The 5 Storytelling Mistakes in Biz:

* Don't say "Let Me Tell You A Story" in a business context.
* Stories and facts should be intermingled in biz storytelling.

* Easy to get the "Hero" wrong (THEM not YOU).
* Story must relate to real world "routines", "habits" & realities.
* Repeat, Rinse, Repeat and so on.

Funny was just thinking about how everything starts with a story now. Didn't think about these five "mistakes" though. Great post.

Google Revolution's Profound Implications - Atlantic BT | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
Google's New SEO Revolution wants improving heuristics the kind created by storytelling, cause and video marketing, the new Critical Success Factors.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

More than a new sheriff we live when every old paradigm is shattered and lies still and worthless on the ground. At an interesting lunch that started with misery around a hummingbird and ended with rejection of the new Critical Success Factors that bring the ever increasing heuristics this NEW GOOGLE demands the profound scope of our current revolution could be glimpsed and appreciated.
