Steve Jobs On How Content Is Truly King [video] ScentTrail Marketing | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

The Lost Steve Jobs Interview
Found two minutes of the best product development vs. process discussion in this amazing Steve Jobs interview. The "lost" interview takes place when Jobs is out of Apple and running Next and it is chock a block full of incredible thoughts and masterful insight (as one would expect).

I copied 2 minutes out of the middle because it was the best two minutes I've ever heard about how creating greatness is always under attack and what you have to do about it (to create magical products).

Lessons In Love From Starbucks CEO [VIDEO]

Lessons In Love From Starbucks CEO [VIDEO] | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Turning Around Starbucks & Startup Lessons
Starbucks lost its way. The company was hemoraging and their founder brought it back. This clip is from an awesome hour long video iterview with Howard Schultz chock full of great startup lessons such as:

* Share Everything.
* Be transparent, passionate and real.
* Love is the killer app.
* When you share you are VULNERABLE.

* Vulnerable feels bad but is good (and healthy).

* Greatness comes from facing hard things and creating plans.
* Vision isn't a small thing.
* Don't try to change people, surround yourself with believers.

* You can't FAKE love over time.
* When in doubt, keep turning the crank.

That last tip is from Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer, our 3,300 mile bicycle ride across America in the summer of 2010. Riding across America on a bicycle was the hardest adn best thing I've ever done. The key was plain and simple early - keep turning the crank (pedals).

I wrote about my personal vulnerability (having the Big C) on Google Plus:

Kristine Putt's comment, August 10, 2013 4:24 PM
Is Starbucks in contradiction with "Love is the killer app" by advocating "Bring your gun to Starbucks day?" Does this move pose the question of brand integrity? What do they stand for, love or packing heat? To me, these seem to be conflicting brand personalities. http://mashable.com/2013/08/09/bring-your-gun-starbucks/
Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, August 10, 2013 6:15 PM
My read on the guns at Starbucks is NOT that it is a brand event as much as a brand kidnapping by gun advocates. I don't see guns as consistent with Schultz stands on other issues and the over (what they stand to gain) is so tiny compared to the under (what they stand to lose) it feels like a brand kidnap more than anything Starbucks is behind. If Starbucks is saying Starbucks = support for guns then I stand corrected and your read is correct (DAMAGE). It just felt like a kidnap to me on reading the piece and any brand can be kidnapped at any time by anyone. Most strong brands, and I would put Starbucks in this group, bounce back since the overall truth wins out in the end (despite the kidnap).
Kristine Putt's comment, August 10, 2013 7:06 PM
Yes, you're right. It does sound like a brand "kidnapping." Although, in an effort to protect its own reputation, I'm kind of thinking that it would be wise for Starbucks to "just say no" to this group - meaning, anyone coming in with a gun strapped to their sides would be 86'd. Imagine if something really terrible happened as a result of this "kidnapping" and Starbucks as faced with an upward battle to repair their brand reputation, all of which could have been easily avoided by simply not catering to the gun group. Not being negative, just looking at the possible outcome and weighing the risks. If it were my brand? No way, not a risk worth taking. Having said all this, absolutely love the original philosophy Starbucks was built on! I believe more brands are learning to embrace an empathic business platform. I hope so anyway :)

Want To SEE Millennial Tech Future? Watch This @iSocialFanz Video #cloudtalk

More Than What is Said
The importance of this week's #cloudtalk Hangout On Air is what Brian does with Periscope, Meerkat and Youtube. Brian was simultaneously creating conversations using "real time video" in three channels.

The power of real time video CAN'T BE OVERSTATED. I didn't understand Periscope until Mark Traphagen went for a walk in Duke Garden. As Mark walk, shooting a real time video, he SAW me join and could discuss what he was seeing / doing.

WOW, think of real time videos as your way to have a conversation. Real time video breaks down the time delay AND you are left with a product, if you record your sessions, that will help others with similar questions later.

The immediacy is too cool to be denies. We've been wrestling with how to break down the silos between commerce and content. Brian's demonstration has our wheels turning.

Deena Varshavskaya: WANELO's CEO The Face of Clean Slate Brands [Charlie Rose Interview Video]

Deena Varshavskaya: WANELO's CEO The Face of Clean Slate Brands [Charlie Rose Interview Video] | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

On “Charlie Rose,” Deena Varshavskaya, founder and chief executive officer at Wanelo. The online social media app connects millions of consumer with some of the biggest brands, as well as the tiniest of independent boutiques.

Marty Note
Listening to WaNeLo's founder discuss her experience raising money and goals for her social shopping company made me realize I was listening to the sound of a clean slate brand. Wanelo is the first salvo in the "social shopping" wars sure to erupt.

Rose asks a good question, "Why won't Twitter and Facebook follow your lead?" They will and Deeena's best defense is a good offense. I signed up for Wanelo and its an intriguing play that couldn't exist without smart phones.

There's "mobile first" and then there is a company like Wanelo who is conceived and could only be possible with mobile. When Deena mentioned that more than 80% of their traffic is mobile my heart skipped a beat and I realized how clean slate this affiliate money play really is.

By mashing up retailers and accepting affiliate money Wanelo has to create a fun and exciting interface. They are about half way there. The way you create your store with swiping is cool and a #muststeal idea, but there is little more to recommend or hold interest currently.

Rose asked all the right questions about WHY and being first is a big recommendation, but not the only thing needed to survive. The UI is worth some money and their more than a million young followers are worth a lot too. Deena correctly locates the biggest challenge in today's market - getting people to love and interact with your content NOT mining or creating some unique Intellectual Property (IP) that can be protected and held over others.

Wanelo walks into social shopping, creates a "game console" using smart phones and will probably be adding gamification soon (if they are half as smart as they seem) and there is the first mover advantage. Important interview about the future of "social shopping".

Minority Report? The 'Internet of Business Things' video interview via WSJ | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

As more things get connected to each other, how can businesses capitalize on the growing 'Internet of Things?' PricewaterhouseCoopers chief technologist Chris Curran joins the News Hub with Sara Murray.

Marty Note
Turns out a forgettable movie, Tom Cruise's Minority Report,  may be prescient for our Internet of Things Future. Fascinating interview with WSJ's Sarah Murray and Price Waterhouse's Chris Curran explores tapping and mashing up the "real data' that's all around us now.

How can we replace guesses with real data.

Retail is "an interesting one" because it involves people and places. Emerging uses of sensors. Others are not so obvious like the power business where sensors can help "optimize the process".

Video Marketing Tips For #Startups

Video Marketing Tips For #Startups | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it
We've taken a look at how to add a YouTube subscribe button to your site, and how to customize it to suit your site's style.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

This post explains HOW to add a YouTube button to a website. The reason tis advice is particularly important for #startups is VIDEO is an important marketing medium for any startup. Startups have something NEW and COOL happening frequently.

CAPTURE those moments and put up a YouTube channel. Now here is the tricky part. Don't JUST put up a YouTube channel. If you know #socialmedia you know your content makes the rich. Rich in traffic, SEO and money.

Only way to make sure your content makes YOU money to is:

1. Drive links back from your social properties.

2. Always THINK about what content should go to THEM vs. YOU.

Your content should be more "Tell the story of US". YouTube content should be about how you fit into the tribe of whatever it is you do. If you are a leader be sure to act like one by NOT claiming to be a leader. Best way to BE a leader online is to curate content across proprietary lines.

Startups take note VIDEO is your medium and be sure to play some videos inside your technical stack in addition to having a YouTube channel Remember to make yourself rich not just Google and Facebook.

Examples of Video curation with Videry

Examples of Video curation with Videry | Startup Revolution | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

This is a cool new tool for "video curation".

Robin Good's curator insight, June 17, 2013 1:14 PM

Videry is a great example of video curation at work.

Videry is a hand-curated collection of over 30 great video clips for web designers.

The beauty and value of this collection, in the context of curation is in the following:

  • The quality of the clips selected

  • A clean, and simple layout - content over looks
The essence is in the selection made and that's why it needs to stand out.

  • The essential info is upfront - video thumbnails + title + description
    no other distractions.

  • A Pinterest-like simmetrical visual layout that allows easy scanning of the page

Where it could do better:

  • Titles: no personalization for context - titles in the collection are exactly as the originals - the curator here could have improved and contextuaized titles for this collection, while keeping a good reference, visible to everyone, of the original one.

  • Descriptions: these are the original video descriptions. No additions, no opinion, no contextualization. The curator could have written his own descriptions from these in the context of this collection, while leaving the original descriptions as an extra option (since they are all already accessible under the original video location).

  • No visibile authorship for the collection.

P.S.: I think this clean design used in this collection is so effective that I wish there was a service prividing the ability to create curated video collections with such information design elegance.

Excerpted from review article by TechCrunch:
Today, ReelSurfer has officially unveiled a redesigned interface, which looks a whole helluva lot better and makes it easier to navigate and makes its URL search box even more prominent — as it should be.

The new interface still enables users to make video mashups or reels of multiple videos and link back to the source so that viewers can check out the full clip if they so choose.

However, the new interface does allow for improved search and video discovery, so that users have a better chance to see if the clip they want to make has already been clippity-clipped by someone else. Time saving, my friends, time saving.

Yet, the biggest addition would have to be that ReelSurfer the now allows users to use its bookmarklet to clip videos from both Brightcove and Ooyala, in addition to YouTube and Vimeo..."
