Return to the market of the apes | by Derek Robertson | Digital Future Daily | POLITICO.com

The digital frontier is starting to feel decidedly like 2021 all over again, fueled by crypto’s big comeback — and the return of one of our surreal, meme-powered digital landscape’s biggest characters.

Keith Gill, better known as “RoaringKitty,” announced his comeback on Sunday after more than two years of inactivity with a Reddit post showing nothing but a multimillion-dollar position in the video game retailer GameStop. It instantly breathed life back into the “meme stock” phenomenon that set Wall Street and regulators alike on their back feet in the early days of the Biden administration, creating a fiasco for the market.

Gill’s story doesn’t revolve around cutting-edge generative AI, or a sophisticated messaging campaign, or hopes for a crypto-fueled financial revolution. But if you want to know how technology can really disrupt how things work, it might just be the headline example. He’s the figurehead of a retail stock trading movement that challenged not just institutional power on Wall Street, but the market’s shared, fundamental understanding of whether or not a company is valuable.

Congress inserted an interesting requirement into the bill that reauthorizes the funding for the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The Bipartisan Case for the Affordable Connectivity Program | by Mignon L. Clyburn & Michael O’Rielly | DCJournal.com

Today’s interconnected world makes it hard to imagine a day or more without internet access, but that may soon be the reality for millions of Americans when funding for a critical federal program runs out. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provides a monthly subsidy to eligible low-income households to help pay their monthly broadband bill. To be clear, we’re talking about basic internet access and the doors it opens, not free Netflix.

This program has made tremendous progress in getting and keeping low-income Americans connected to affordable broadband, but if Congress fails to fund it this month, the digital divide will widen. Now is the time for lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to come together and fund this popular, empowering, consumer-friendly, fiscally compelling and bipartisan program.

The Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded $32,235,629 to the West Virginia Department of Economic Development to enhance broadband service across the state. Broadband, which provides continuous high-speed internet, is often difficult to access in remote areas lacking infrastructure such as fiber-optic cables or transmission towers.

West Virginia is significantly behind other states in broadband access, with over 300,000 households underserved and ranking second-worst in the nation for coverage. Recent efforts to expand broadband coverage have brought increased attention and investment to the state.
