Description

There is a revolution going on today: Learners only want to learn those subjects that matter to them. Learners yearn for freedom and control to create useful results based on their learning efforts. Unfortunately, our solutions continue to cram learners like sardines in tin cans, specifically during exhausting webinars and boring eLearning. On the other hand, enlightened organizations show respect for the learners’ needs. They strive to retain employees and reduce turnover. Enter mentoring, as a growth opportunity to help learners.

Many learning professionals complain, “I can’t spend all my time on one-on-one mentoring!” But so do the learners.  “My expert mentor is not available.” The problem does not stem from time, but the lack of clear vision and expertise on how to modernize mentoring in today’s learning environment.  We need to recognize that innovative mentoring is about deep learning. It is personalized.  It actually costs less, and involves even less time on the mentors’ end.

Join us in the webinar! Ray will share with you case studies on bullet-proof mentoring methods.

Topics to cover:
Why is our concept of mentoring so antiquated?
What are major shifts in mentoring caused by the pandemic, technology, culture of organizations, and learners’ needs?
Why is mass training no longer the proven technique for learning?
What are the pivot points of the 6 bullet-proof mentoring methods?
Apply the proven and tested mentoring methods in virtual training:
Mentoring by everyone
Peer-to-peer mentoring
Mentoring by projects
Mentoring by the problem-solution discovery
Mentoring through digital tools
Hybrid mentoring for hands-on training
From newbie to expert mentoring
Self-mentoring tools and techniques
Disruptive mentoring platforms

Mentoring as a strategy for investing in staff progress

Mentoring as a strategy for investing in staff progress | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
cademics find themselves in a progressively competitive and demanding work environment. There are ever-increasing pressures to research and publish, to apply for grants, to keep abreast of and incorporate the latest technology in their teaching, regularly review course content, deliver in online and face-to-face mode, contribute to committees and perform an array of administrative duties.

The past couple of years have drawn further attention to these challenges and the importance of not only attracting and effectively appointing the best staff, but also retaining academic talent. The pandemic has taken its toll not only on students, but also on academics. Some left the sector voluntarily, frustrated and stressed by the enforced changes; others were subject to involuntary redundancy.

Without good staff it doesn’t take long before the organisation suffers in terms of lack of progress and productivity. Universities must invest in a range of ways to recruit the best talent and significantly create opportunities, conditions and practices that assure staff they can develop and advance in their career.

Africa’s Youth Employment Challenge: New Perspectives

Africa’s Youth Employment Challenge: New Perspectives | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Who are the youth and what is the problem? Are entrepreneurship and self-employment the solution? And what about youth aspirations? Such questions are addressed in this issue of the IDS Bulletin, drawing from the literature on how development research affects policy and noting that it says little about how young researchers move into policy engagement.

Empowering women through mentorship: a conversation with Saadia Muzaffar

Empowering women through mentorship: a conversation with Saadia Muzaffar | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
What are the benefits of mentorship?

So the great thing about mentorship is that in its essence it’s a very simple concept. It’s being able to look back and see where you had difficulty in your career and making sure that you can do something today to help people make their journeys are a little bit easier and their results a little bit better. Leadership is also so much of that, thinking of your contributions as more than just your career or your personhood and bringing more to the table than just a one dimensional advancement agenda. So it’s equal parts guiding and learning and both mentorship and leadership have that in common, which is why a lot of good mentors make really good leaders.

Mentoring meets the Metaverse

Mentoring meets the Metaverse | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Mentoring has been a best practice in business for decades, as soon as researchers proved that employees with mentors were more successful at work than those without. Their findings were: A mentor helps their mentee gain clarity on career goals, develop leadership skills, clarify values and leverage their talents.

The Metaverse is a powerful new virtual medium with the potential to enhance the mentor/mentee relationship. Recent innovations like augmented reality, virtual reality and digital identities, along with best practices from social media, create spaces for rich user interactions that mimic the real world. With the right application, the Metaverse can have a transformative effect on the mentor and mentee.

Microcredentials and Mentoring: How universities can boost student employability

Microcredentials and Mentoring: How universities can boost student employability | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

The looming recession climate is causing concerns over skyrocketing student debt. On top of a deeply unaffordable housing market, these factors call for universities to be more relevant in terms of preparing students for employability.

This is a break with the traditional mission of the universities. Economist George Fallis, professor emeritus at York University, notes that traditionally, universities aimed to “provide liberal education for undergraduates, to conduct research and to contribute to society including the economy and culture.”

The Best Mentorships Help Both People Grow

The Best Mentorships Help Both People Grow | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

A transformational mentorship is a relationship that offers something powerful to both the mentee and the mentor. As a mentee, the trick to fully engaging your mentor lies in finding the right person: someone with whom you can build a relaxed, inspiring camaraderie, driven by curiosity as opposed to the binary instructor-student exchange we normally teach. How do you find this person? Try following these steps:

Look beyond the obvious places. It can be challenging to avoid the traditional teacher-student approach to mentorship when your mentor is a leader within your own organization. Instead, try looking for potential mentors in ecosystems tangential to your work and your interests.
Ask to meet before you ask for mentoring. While someone may seem perfect on paper, they could easily end up being a bad fit once you engage directly. You need to make sure there is a genuine connection, so start small with (virtual) coffee or lunch.
Test the waters. Your ideal mentor should be someone who resists providing you with quick answers, and prefers engaging you in conversation through which you can both learn and grow.
Don’t limit yourself. Just as you can teach and influence your mentor as the mentee, you can mentor others. By teaching someone else, you will also learn to clearly express and communicate your ideas, which is essential to your professional growth.

Mentoring in the Era of #MeToo

Mentoring in the Era of #MeToo  | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
I worry about the women who will miss out on the mentorship of well-intentioned men who fear being accused of mistreatment. And I worry about the women who will be passed over because it’s simply “easier” for men to supervise men during this challenging time. And I worry that progress toward gender equity with leadership opportunities for women will regress.
