Canada faces a serious shortage of STEM skills

Canada faces a serious shortage of STEM skills | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

Unlike overcoming the educational and integration dysfunctions that have created the skills supply shortfall, reducing the brain drain is in the hands of business. Most firms have traditionally looked to the education and immigration systems to produce an adequate STEM skills supply. That attitude must change, both for their own financial survival, and that of our nation.

Canada. (Another) New Report on Skills | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

Yes, there are skills shortages, but a) not many think they are that significant, and big business thinks they’re better insulated than other companies in their sector.  But compared to when the Canadian Council of CEO’s asked a similar (but ever so-slightly differently worded) question four years ago, the answers seem to be that skills shortages seem to have eased.

Africa. Skills shortages still blocking development

Despite some progress in reducing education gaps, skills remain an important barrier for development on the continent, according to the Africa Competitiveness Report 2017. And while higher education participation in advanced economies is still growing significantly, in Africa it has only progressed from approximately 6.5% to 8.5% over the past 10 years.

Canada must streamline education to turn degrees into jobs

Canada must streamline education to turn degrees into jobs | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
'Universities and colleges need to think about how what they’re providing translates into the labour market. And business needs to tell us what skills they need, because we don’t know'
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Look at any community college application list, and more often than not, you’ll find a sizable contingent of university graduates. The thought that a university degree is the ticket to instant career success is creating a backlash in Canada. We have more BAs than the market will bear, a growing shortage of practical skills, and an army of kids burdened with huge debt loads after spending upward of seven years in post-secondary education.

The Growing Skills Gap, Explained In Three Charts

The Growing Skills Gap, Explained In Three Charts | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

There's high youth unemployment around the world, despite a multitude of job vacancies.
Blame the skills shortage, which 39 percent of employers say is preventing them from filling entry level jobs. Meanwhile in most of the world, less than half of students think their educations prepare them for employment. Employers know it, students know it as well. But educational institutions apparently don't, which may be preventing them from making needed changes,

Canada. Mind the gap: No ‘people skills,’ no job | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Investing in machinery and education is critical. Investing in Canadians' essential skills for living, learning and working is just as important but much less understood
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Work-force shortage is already here, especially in Western Canada. There are three components to the problem of labour shortages. The first two – an aging and shrinking work force, and a knowledge-skills shortage – have been well documented. But the third is a shortage of the essential skills required in any job.
