A report argues that in our quickly changing modern world, education cannot prepare for the future using only lessons of the past. In many countries, education is still struggling to adjust to the changes of today and is not ready for those of tomorrow. Responsible policy pulls future developments into the present and turns them into an opportunity to learn and prepare.

COVID-19 has forced more than 1 billion students and youth out of school, triggering the world’s biggest educational technology (edtech) implementation in history, almost overnight. Schools and universities are scrambling to redesign their teaching and learning to allow for students of all ages to study from home. While this raises huge practical and logistic issues for students, teachers and parents (especially women), it opens up a world of opportunities to reimagine what learning looks like in the 21st century.

The report offers a glimpse of how children see their future, and the forces that, if properly understood and harnessed, will drive them forward to realise their dreams. Through concerted actions by educators and business leaders, we can help our children develop the kinds of skills needed not only to weather, but to take advantage of this revolution

Countries all over the world want their young people to have 21st century skills—to think critically and creatively, solve complex problems, make evidence-based decisions, and work collaboratively. 

Governments need to be mindful of how microcredentials are developed and the role they play in education and training across Canada.

The world of work is quickly changing. As educators, we want to prepare our students for their future careers. But to do that, many schools need to ramp up instruction in real-world professional skills and teach emerging technology skills across subject areas.

It is the education and training we provide our youth and workers that will fuel the engines of future AI, and therefore geopolitical success.

Community colleges, private businesses, and distance learning all will have greater roles to play in future workforce development.
