Millennial parents and students still prefer pen and paper for productive learning

Millennial parents and students still prefer pen and paper for productive learning | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
In today’s technology-driven culture, when it comes to education and productivity, students and parents still prefer paper. This according to a new report by the Paper and Packaging Board that found that about 8 in 10 people (79 percent) think that paper is essential to learning.

The report "Paper and Productive Learning" found that 93 percent of college students and 87 percent of 7-12th grade students agree that paper is an essential part of being able to achieve their educational goals.

Despite being tech savvy and pro-digital, millennials feel they learn information best if they write it down by hand. “Students tell us they remember more when reading in print. Not surprisingly, some report spending more time when reading print and reading more carefully than with digital texts,” says Dr. Naomi Baron, professor of Linguistics at American University.

Hate Handwriting? Me Too. Here’s Why We Should Teach It Anyway.

Hate Handwriting? Me Too. Here’s Why We Should Teach It Anyway. | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

As you have probably noticed, people don’t write in cursive as much as they used to. Your own handwriting has probably faltered over the years, and if not, you have surely noticed handwriting of others faltering around you. 41 out of 50 states don’t require handwriting to be taught in schools as of 2014. Maybe you think this is no big deal, after all, why handwrite when we can type?

As an adult with barely readable handwriting, I share your frustration. However, I think we ought to teach it to all young people in school anyway. Handwriting ought to be a standard part of non-optional art class. Kids even ought to have the chance to learn a fancier style of script than most of us were taught growing up. Here’s why.

Some interesting views on handwriting.

Bill Rounis's curator insight, September 26, 2015 8:17 PM

An interesting article and video.  I believe that I heard some time ago that the pen is still a very valuable form of technology.  Some elementary schools no longer teach cursive writing styles.  Maybe we should rethink that.

Neuroscientists say handwriting is good for you (Science Alert)

Neuroscientists say handwriting is good for you (Science Alert) | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Using our keyboards saves us lots of precious time, but writing by hand has lots of benefits.

Researchers have shown that children who know how to write by hand learn to read faster. They are also better at retaining information and coming up with new ideas.

“When we write, a unique neural circuit is automatically activated. There is a core recognition of the gesture in the written word, a sort of recognition by mental simulation in your brain,” Stanislas Dehaene, a psychologist at the Collège de France in Paris, told The New York Times.

A study conducted at Indiana University, in the US, reported that when children write by hand three areas of the brain are activated—the left fusiform gyrus, the inferior frontal gyrus and the posterior parietal cortex. These are the same areas that are set in motion when adults read and write. Kids who typed or just traced letters didn’t show any activation in these areas.
