It’s been a good ride. For 10 years, I’ve been an Inside Higher Ed blogger. I’ll be sad to leave the blogging team, but after 10 years readers have probably had enough of me. (Ever since the days of sharing my opinions on library Listservs in the 1990s, I have always imagined eyes rolling as my name pops up: not that woman again!) Opinions, I have them.

I’ll carry on blogging at my own site, though without deadlines I suspect I will be a bit more ad hoc about when I post. A more relaxed schedule will give me time to work on that book project that I’ve pushed aside for too long. (It’s -- surprise! -- a college librarian’s take on technology and how it works on society.)

Stop Reading and Start Learning: How to Absorb Information Better | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

There is no shortage of material that needs to be read in business including marketing copy, business plans, contracts legal documents and of course business books. I love to read but not all business reading is particularly entertaining or well written. And some of the most important stuff is dense, dry and dreadful no matter how much achieving success requires you read it.


So when my inbox is full of necessary reading that I know will put me to sleep, I have to make a special effort to power through it. First, I set aside time with no distractions. No phone, email or TV to draw my focus. Then I find a place with lots of natural light. Lastly I turn on mellow music that I know well so I can get into rhythmic groove. Before you know it the stack is gone and I feel better for having been productive.


Here are more ways to tackle that tough material from my Inc. colleagues.

There are many other techniques for learning from everything read; as an example, there are few of them here; however, "the learning styles" is such a sensible topic nowadays. I would rather talk about recognizing  the strenghts I have for learning in which all the learning styles are included.

Project Information Literacy explores how students understand and navigate information — and what has to change.

 

"The new information landscape is a product of algorithmic data collection used by social media platforms, like Facebook and YouTube, news sites, and even our cellphones. Companies use invisible computer codes to track users’ interactions in order to personalize their web experiences and influence their buying and viewing behavior, leading to concerns about privacy, accuracy of information, the preservation of shared norms, and authenticity.

 

Data is collected everywhere. Even schools, from elementary schools to higher education institutions, collect data on students through learning management systems (LMS), thrusting schools directly into debates that consider how these companies, like Canvas, protect or use data.

 

While the ethics and impact of algorithmic-driven content on platforms like Facebook or an LMS are murky and just emerging, the Project Information Literacy study raises immediate flags."

This makes teaching significantly important and difficult work, and can leave teaching—as a craft—wide-eyed and nonplussed in response.

Worse, those outside the bubble of education can understandably struggle to understand the problem.

What are the teaching in those schools anyway? How is it any different from when I was in school?"

How has teaching changed? Below are the seven key ideas. .

1. A culture of emerging literacies

2. A society that is mobile

3. A world where equity is a central theme

4. A society of constant connectivity

5. A world where the technology learns, too

6. A context that demands new credibility in an era of information

7. A culture that can seem, well, distracted

Many teachers may be overwhelmed with these changes and may require professional development to help them develop new skills that technology brings. But change has happened before and will continue to happen. The question is how are we adapting to the changes and how can we assist our students in becoming independent  learners in this new age of learning?
