Do we still need Learning TECHNOLOGISTS? –

The answer to the question in the “click bait” title is – yes of course we do, we most definitely need the role, but do we still need the title?

In 2014 Santanu Vasant wrote an article in jobs.ac.uk identifying the broad nature of the role and the broad background and expertise of role holders so I won’t go into any detail about what a Learning Technologist (LT) might be as you can read that article linked below as a starting point.

https://blog.jobs.ac.uk/education/teaching-learning/what-is-a-learning-technologist/

My experience is that Learning Technologists often have significant technological and pedagogical expertise. I know from personal experience the value of working with fantastic “learning technologists” and they can be key to really successful learning experiences.

How Students Benefit From a Flipped Classroom (And Ways To Implement It)

How Students Benefit From a Flipped Classroom (And Ways To Implement It) | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

The internet has created hundreds of hubs for teachers to share ideas and insights when it comes to helping students learn. In addition to lesson plans, educators offer tips and advice for connecting with kids.

One method of teaching that has become popular is the flipped or inverted classroom in which students do homework during class and then watch videos with the course material at home. The concept is so much more involved, especially for teachers who want to teach it well. Here is why you should consider flipped learning in your classroom.

The Fall, and Rise, of Reading

The Fall, and Rise, of Reading | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

David Jolliffe has seen how much trouble students have had in recent years doing their reading.

He has given them a full article or book and watched them struggle to read anything beyond an excerpt. He has handed them a nonfiction book and heard them call it a novel. He has asked them to tell him the main idea of a text and watched their eyes search the page for answers.

“The main idea in a text is not on the page,” Jolliffe, who retired last year from the University of Arkansas as a professor of English and of curriculum and instruction, tells them. It’s “something in your head that you need to construct.”

What are Research and Information Fluency Skills?

What are Research and Information Fluency Skills? | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

This video clip is a bit old, but I still like using it to spark conversation on why we need to teach differently in today’s classrooms. When we have almost instant access to factual information, we shouldn’t be asking students to simply recall those facts. The Teaching Innovation Progression Chart highlights Research and Information Fluency as one of the key strands for student success. In a student-driven classroom, teachers should be modeling strategiesto guide student investigation, designing challenges that promote synthesis of resources to address an authentic task, supporting students as they acquire, evaluate, and apply information, and facilitating and formatively assessing authentic tasks where students are engaged in research and using information fluently. In these classrooms, we should see students constructing questions to guide research, selecting the most appropriate digital tools and information sources, assembling and synthesizing information to address authentic tasks, and using tools to powerfully display and interact with information.

What is ‘Swift Trust,’ and Why Do I Want it in My Classes? | Faculty Focus

What is ‘Swift Trust,’ and Why Do I Want it in My Classes? | Faculty Focus | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Due to the shift to performance-based funding in many states, colleges and universities have sharpened their focus on student retention. Because of this, I have sought out information about best practices in retaining students, in particular online students, to help do my fair share in this effort for the schools where I teach. While I found many articles about the importance of social presence, one of the more interesting discoveries was from a chapter in Trust in Organizations on the concept called “swift trust.” Although it is mostly put into practice and studied in workplace settings, it certainly applies to education, too.

A 2021 Definition of Edtech

A 2021 Definition of Edtech | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

"Edtech, or “educational tech,” is the utilization of apps and tech devices for the purpose of teaching and learning. Edtech can happen inside or outside of classrooms, at any time, and in any place. Most modern edtech involves the use of a wireless internet connection and an electronic device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, or desktop computer. Edtech allows for one learner or five million to learn, anywhere on earth, and to take the same classes as each other."

Digital literacies online | Learning with 'e's

Digital literacies online | Learning with 'e's | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

I''m currently writing several short online courses for educators, and I've just published the second module in my online series about digital learning. It focuses on digital competencies and literacies and takes under an hour to complete.

I've written about digital literacies in previous publications, because I consider them vital for the success of any technology supported learning ventures. I believe that unless we develop appropriate digital literacies, we will be less able to exploit the power and unlock the potential of new and emerging technologies in education.

Here are a few links to previous posts:

Complete Web Browsing Privacy Guide for Teachers

Complete Web Browsing Privacy Guide for Teachers | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
The Internet is an invaluable resource for teachers and students, but it's also one that's filled with risks as well. The education sector is commonly targeted by hackers, both because it has valuable data and because cyber security measures are inconsistent across districts, campuses, and buildings. They are prime targets for social engineering attacks such as phishing, since cyber security awareness may not be the same among the teacher and student population. Social engineering tactics can be particularly useful against larger organizations, as it's less likely that an unfamiliar face or name would be out of place in that environment. On top of that risk, a lack of privacy can also stem from inappropriate social media settings, over sharing, and other factors that lead to reputation damage or cyberbullying. Use this complete web browsing privacy guide to protect teachers, students, and parents from all the dangers of web browsing.

Flipped Classroom: Advantages and Challenges

Flipped Classroom: Advantages and Challenges | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
The flipped classroom originated in Colorado when two Chemistry teachers, Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams, started recording lectures for students to watch at home. They were driven to increase interaction with students when they seem to need it most, during homework. So, they flipped the traditional classroom structure; students watched the lecture at home and then completed homework under the guidance of their teacher during class. Bergmann and Sams reported increased assessment scores in the first year of its implementation1, and the model quickly became popular.

Questions academics can ask to decolonise their classrooms

Questions academics can ask to decolonise their classrooms | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

The curriculum is not just the “stuff” that students must learn to be knowledgeable and skilled in a particular discipline. It’s about more than just content.

Sociologists of education argue that “curriculum” is a highly ideological hybrid discourse. This means that it includes implicit ways of knowing, ways of doing and ways of being – as well as content.

Blended Learning and How it Redefines Teachers’ Roles

Blended Learning and How it Redefines Teachers’ Roles | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

In this today’s blog post, you can find an adequate definition of blended learning, its typical model, and its influences on teacher roles.

Blended Learning Definition

As you know, traditional classroom method focuses on teacher-centered education. Meanwhile, personalized learning emphasizes the central role of learners. Besides, the remarkable development of technology in recent decades has brought a new learning trend- eLearning,  which slowly replaces the traditional methods of teaching. Blended learning is lying somehow among those three concepts.

Desirable Difficulties in Convenient Coursework

Desirable Difficulties in Convenient Coursework | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
The phrase “desirable difficulties” was first coined in the nineties by psychologist Robert Bjork to describe learning conditions that introduced inconveniences to yield greater learner retention of material. According to the literature, the more work that is required to learn a concept, the greater the mastery (Sparks, 2011). To illustrate, a classical example of a desirable difficulty is found in the use of flashcards as study tools. Flashcards typically display only partial information, as a cue for the user to recall a more complete set of facts. When compared to lecture notes, flashcards require a student to work harder in recalling materials and are therefore especially effective study tools. As such, flashcards have been popular among students for decades.

Impostor Syndrome is a Superpower – | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Impostor Syndrome (IS) is a ‘phenomena’ in which an individual doubts their abilities and lives in fear of being exposed as a fraud. Severity varies between individuals but impostor syndrome is perceived as negative. Ironically, as a shortcoming. I propose embracing your impostor syndrome. Your doubt is your strength.

This is my first post in 2019 and I thought, to make a change, I would write something positive.

Forbes released a good piece on this recently “Why Imposter Syndrome Is A Good Thing“. I have meant to write a post on this for some time, so here we go. (Annoyed I spelled it wrong in the tweet but NVM)
