Google Glass: What It's Like to Have 'an iPhone Attached to Your Face'

From www.adweek.com

What Google Glass means for online marketers
SUMMARY: Wearing Google's Glass headset is "like having your iPhone attached to your face all of the time," says Silicon Valley marketing veteran Peter Pham. That's going to open up a new world of possibilities for marketers, particularly in search and local discovery, Pham predicts. "I think it's going to change the way advertisers target people in the physical world," he says.

Ally Greer:

It's time to face it - localization is in.

Marketers, figure it out.

Consumers, open your mind to it. It might be kind of cool to have the ads you see actually be relevant to you, and to discover awesome new things based upon your interests.

20 Critical Do's and Don'ts for Clickable Calls-to-Action [SlideShare]

From blog.hubspot.com

Must-read: Familiarize yourself with these 20 critical CTA do's and don'ts so you can create marketing calls-to-action that get visitors clicking. Calls-to-action (CTAs) are one of the most critical inbound marketing tools. Whether they take the form of anchor text links, images, or buttons, CTAs are what motivate and direct your visitors to take a desired action, usually on a landing page. This could mean anything from registering for an event, downloading content and converting into leads, or encouraging prospects to move further down your marketing funnel toward sales-readiness. But not all calls-to-action are effective at converting your visitors. And because we've worked with so many marketers over the years, we've seen our fair share of lackluster and underperforming CTAs in our day. So to help you get a handle on some of the most critical CTA best practices, this post -- and the accompanying SlideShare -- will uncover the good, the bad, and the ugly of calls-to-action, so you can learn what works (and what doesn't) with CTAs....

Two Pens's curator insight, March 21, 2013 12:53 PM

Good tip here: don't link your Call to Action (CTA) back to your home page; link back to a dedicated landing page that restates the offer and reminds the clicker why they clicked. Same principle as restating the offer in a direct marketing package.

Must-read... See. That's a call to action. ;-)

Social Media and Community Manager - The All New Hybrid

From www.steamfeed.com

When the internet started, the community manager was born. Then along came social media and from that came that new upstart "social media manager"
Ally Greer:

I'm not quite sure why there's such tension between these two positions. In my opinion, they should be combined into one super-mega-awesome social/community role. Speaking from experience. I'm not sure one can succeed without the other.

A breakdown of Applebee's receipt controversy

From nrn.com

“Since Thursday, Applebee’s has not manually deleted a single comment nor have we manually blocked a single person that has come to our Facebook page”

Ally Greer:

This is a crazy story about how things can unfold on the internet. The rumors being spread about Applebee's are severely damaging their reputation, and more people need to try and understand what's actually going on before they talk.

Personally, I think Applebees has handled the situation in such a way that large brands should take note of - not ignoring anyone or blocking anyone while also being kind and understanding to anyone and everyone who has an opinion to voice.

Gary Vaynerchuk Talks Social Media Trends, Time Management (Q&A)

From www.huffingtonpost.com

Gary Vaynerchuk On Social Media Trends, Time Management, Online & Real-Life Balance (Q&A) - The Huffington Post
Ally Greer:

This is a great conversation with Gary Vaynerchuck. Although I don't always agree with Gary, I think he does have some great insights into social media, where it is today, and where it's headed in the future.

3 things that I found interesting:

"I think we said on TechCrunch TV that 99.5% of people who say that they're social media experts are clowns, and I believe that."

-This can't be repeated enough. With the increased use of social media, tens of thoudands of people are claiming to be experts. As someone who works in social media myself, I can personally say that I don't believe anyone who says they're an expert in any social media platform, beacuse there is always something new to learn.

"You see Vine come out and everybody cry about how do you make a 6-second video, it's no different than what they said about 140 characters in 2007, but we figure it out."

-This actually sounds like something that came out of my very own mouth. I can't get over this phenomenon of people absolutely freaking out over new things that limit or challenge them in different ways, and then after some time, getting used to them and using them every day.

"I'm obsessed with restrictions. It's why I invested in Path, it's why I love Vine...when you require people to be under restrictions, whether it's your friend count, or the length of time that you can make a video."

-This reminded me of something brought up by K.Tighe, director of content for TaskRabbit, at Scoop.it's #leancontent meet up. She was talking about making your content as valuable as possible, and explained an exercise which involved writing a piece - perhaps a professional bio for yourself or your boss - starting at 500 words, then cutting it down to 250 words, then to a tweet (140 characters). These restrictions force you to only include the most valuable pieces of information, and the same goes for restrictive apps like Vine.

Introducing Graph Search Beta

From newsroom.fb.com

Facebook Newsroom - Today we’re introducing a limited preview of Graph Search
Ally Greer:

Graph Search could be a whole new frontier for online marketers. Being able to search the specific likes of certain types of people such as "music liked by people who like Mitt Romney" has been the missing ingredient for some time now.

As Mark Zuckerberg said, Graph Search will give you the answers rather than links to the answers. Being able to identify the likes and interests of groups of people will help online marketers better target their ads and even create campaigns based upon topics that they know will resonate with their desired audiences.

Quality Content Costs Less, Wins More than SEM

From www.allysongreer.com

At Distilled's SearchLove in October of this year, SEOMoz CEO  Rand Fishkin  channeled his inner Beatles fan with a presentation called " Can't Buy Me Love ."

Ally Greer:

I'm a pretty big advocate of content marketing, and I don't think there's a more convincing argument than the one presented by Rand Fishkin in this presentation.

It's increasingly becoming known that search engines are favoring genuine content over paid content. Why spend double the dollars for a smaller ROI? Content is in for 2013.

I'm a big advocate of humanization of a brand's social media presence. No one wants to interact with your logo or the mysterious person behind it. What Facebook's Algorithm Change Means for Marketers

From bronto.com

With big changes at Facebook afoot, what will it mean for marketers?
Ally Greer:

With Facebook's new EdgeRank system that shows only the most relevant posts, it's possible that a lot of what you're posting isn't even showing up in your followers' newsfeeds.

Facebook is slowly trying to become a "pay to play" platform, similar to Google. In order for your content to be seen, it has to be awesomely awesome, or you have to pay per click.

Ally Greer's curator insight, November 29, 2012 2:32 PM

If you're a company focusing a lot of your efforts on Facebook, it's time you rethink your content strategy for this increasingly "pay to play" platform.

Similarly to Google, Facebook's new algorithm shows only the best/most viral content as well as the content whose creators pay for it to be seen.

For smaller businesses who don't exactly have the pay-per-click budget, it's time to get creative. Post the most relevant and interesting images and pieces of content, and encourage engagement by posting only "Shareables."

Yasmina Dumont's curator insight, December 13, 2012 3:55 AM
