Cut through the Noise with Meaningful Content Curation

Cut through the Noise with Meaningful Content Curation | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
Several take-aways from this impromptu panel at the Samsung lounge:

- Information overload creates an opportunity for curation, including businesses: “Curation is a scalable model for a company,” said Owyang
- Curation is also creation: "[A curator] takes content a step further than an editor does. A curator starts with something he is passionate about"
- Curation can't be automated; “In order for it to be interesting, that layer of context and creation is key”

Blogging Is Dead. Long live curation ?

Blogging Is Dead. Long live curation ? | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
I found this article about the end of blogging by Scoot Monty very interesting. It also refers to the NY Times article here : http://nyti.ms/eLNTOh and goes back to the fundamental trends which affect blogging.

I think they're 2-fold:

- the social aspect of blogging (interacting with people) is challenged by Facebook. it's the “I don’t use my blog anymore. All the people I’m trying to reach are on Facebook.” argument.

- the content creation aspect of blogging face a new distribution system which relies on curation. Through Twitter, Facebook or new curation platforms like Scoop.it, readers click on what curators have shared rather than simply follow blogs via RSS or any other forms of direct subscription.

Ironically, this latter is a challenge that blogs share with traditional media.

It's Not Information Overload. It's Filter Failure. (by Clay Shirky)

Axelle suggested to me that talk by Clay Shirky from the 2008 Web 2.0 Expo NY.

It's quite old but I felt it was still spot on: let's not try to think we can fix this by regulating the amount of information upstream. It's the filtering downstream that needs to evolve.

All the current attempts at building efficient Curation mechanism are following this approach.

As Clay puts it: "We've had information overload in some form or another since the 1500's (he dates it to Gutenberg and print). What's changing is that the filters we've been using for most of the past 500 years stopped to work".

Time to innovate !

Why AOL's HuffPo acquisition is a smart move - not an overpriced blunder

While some continue to think it doesn't make sense, it's overpriced or whatever, I like Jeff Jarvis analysis of the deal.

M&A is about acquiring something you can not create... and paying a premium for that.

What AOL got is a deep understanding of the new media models that work. "What HuffPo and Arianna bring is a new cultural understanding of media that is built around the value of curation, the power of peers, the link economy, passion as an asset, and celebrity as a currency." The curation route and by the way not on the SEO-route of "making content for search" which more and more seems to me like a dead-end for media companies.

A lot of traditional media are still struggling to get beyond the "outmoded" model where "content must be something that is created only by content companies that pay content people to create it". As Jarvis puts it, "Content is no longer scarce, people. It is abundant. Google understands that. Twitter understands that. Huffington Post understands that. Sadly, old content people from old content companies still do not. Therein lies a lesson in this acquisition."

Why Content Curation Could be the Best Marketing Idea in 2011

Why Content Curation Could be the Best Marketing Idea in 2011 | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
It's widely accepted that creating compelling and relevant content and publishing it on a consistent basis can lead to a bevy of benefits for the digital marketer. Namely, increased traffic, links, SEO authority, leads, thought leadership status and sales growth.

"Content is King," we hear. And creating content is at the center of any inbound marketing plan. SEO you might say begins and ends with content; without it we'd have no reason to search. Blogs and podcasts tell us 2011 is the year of content marketing.

The Age Of Relevance

The Age Of Relevance | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
Interesting Guest Post on TechCrunch by Mahendra Palsule.

And close to our hearts at Scoop.it that we view as the topic-centric social media with relevance increase as a clear objective.

"What’s the Next Big Thing after social networking?

This has been a favorite topic of much speculation among tech enthusiasts for many years. I think we are already witnessing a paradigm shift – a move away from simple social sharing towards personalized, relevant content.

The key element of the next big thing is the increasing significance of the Interest Graph to complement the Social Graph. While Facebook, Twitter, and Google are already working on delivering relevant content, a slew of startups are focusing exclusively on it."

Why Facebook "Fan Pages" are not curation pages

Why Facebook "Fan Pages" are not curation pages | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
There is a form of curation that occurs on Facebook when friends publish to me content they liked.

This curation have a positive bias for readers: we all like it! But it doesn't mix well with our areas of interest.

More importantly, Facebook pages don't offer curators enough control compared to dedicated curation tools.

Here's why.
