How Content Curation Drives Traffic

How Content Curation Drives Traffic | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
Over the last 18 months we have seen content curation evolving…perhaps maturing to the point where, in 2015, it will come of age.
Guillaume Decugis's insight:

A recap of the various ways content curation helps build a targeted audience by CommsAxis' Lilach Bullock.

As she points out, while content curation is a way to scale the amount of content published while adding value, there is no way to "cheat" through a fully automated process: artificial intelligence and algorithms empower curators but do not replace their human judgement.

Concretely, she breaks down her tips in 5 different practical points on how to build traffic. To build up on this, you can also check on our own analysis on where content curation traffic comes from.

Content development is about education and discovery; both of which can be satisfied through content curating. Finding the best content for your audience comes down to asking the right questions: What is my audience looking for? What kind of content is relevant? How do I attract my audience and engage?

If you're blogging or creating any content, curation comes naturally as a way to feed your inspiration as we've commented several times. Research is often the first step in any creative process. Why Facebook is bigger for content than you think: dark social traffic on mobile

Why Facebook is bigger for content than you think: dark social traffic on mobile | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
New data show that Facebook is even more powerful.
Guillaume Decugis's insight:
Analytics systems are just starting to capture a fraction of the mobile Facebook traffic they're receiving. Why? Because it's technically not counted as referral traffic since it's not happening in the same browser but from an App - Facebook - to the browser. So the real referral traffic of Facebook is (1) the referral traffic of Facebook + (2) a part of the traffic counted as direct or bookmarked. And because Facebook is so much used on mobile and tablets, it is significant and shows how much control Facebook has on media distribution. The consequence for content publishers? Make sure you curate and publish good content others will want to reshare.

The power of content curation for inbound marketing

Inbound marketing is definitely more efficient and appealing to the sophisticated modern customer than traditional interruptive outbound techniques. But for inbound marketing to work, you need to have its lifeblood: content.

Guillaume Decugis's insight:

Content curation has played an important role in content marketing for some time now. But we wanted to look specifically at what it brought to inbound marketing specifically and that's what @Marc Rougier's been doing in that great presentation from a talk he gave recently.

Content curation doesn't just help marketers do more and better by being more targeted. It also helps build trust as this study demonstrated: customers have become more sophisticated and stopped to fully trust vendor-created content because they know it's been designed with an agenda. Curating and publishing 3rd-party content is not 100% objective either but it brings an independent perspective that helps with regards to building that trust.

Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, November 5, 2014 1:48 PM

These slides are from a talk Marc Rougier recently gave on how content curation helps to solve inbound marketing #1 pain point: scaling the content you publish to feed your landing pages and conversion loops.

Content Marketing and inbound marketing are on a conversion path, specifically for B2B marketers who are looking for ROI.

These slides contain explanations on how content curation helps inbound marketers, what ROI they can expect vs created content* as well as case studies from both SMBs and larger enterprises.

*with data from our latest white paper and study which found out that 1 dollar invested in content curation was 50% more efficient than the same dollar invested in created content - plus a lot of other great findings.

Rachael Johnston's curator insight, November 19, 2014 4:11 PM

Check out this slideshow for a brief overview of inbound marketing and content curation

Outbound Marketing: interruptive, shouting, propoganda, paid VS.

Inbound Marketing: invitation,, converse, value, earned

* Inbound marketing is becoming used more and more frequently. It draws the customers and clients in instead of pushing their product/service/business right at them.

Inbound marketing is all about content. It has to be available through as many devices as possible, it must build a community, it needs to useful content to engage readers, and it must be frequently distributed/shared.

* It is crucial that the content has value and that the readers are really interested. Content must be created and shared regularly in order to keep the readers coming back for more. As Chris Bailey said during his presentation, if your content doesn't bring value to your reader, they won't read it! You/Your page won't grow.

This is why it is important to add some of your own insight when curating in order to enrich the content and bring extra "expertise" value to your readers.

All the new media rock stars that were launched post Web 2.0 have one thing in common: they don't produce all of the content they publish.

How Curated Content Performance Beats Original Content

How Curated Content Performance Beats Original Content | Content curation trends | Scoop.it

"Should I create original content or curate content from others?

Many content marketers don’t EVEN consider this question.

Why?

They worry that curated content is NOT as effective as original content"

Marc Rougier's insight:

Insightful analysis by Heidi Cohen.

For most businesses, the first step into deploying a Content strategy was not to measure the value of content, but rather to realize the mere need to have a Content strategy: we need to fight the content shock. "I pusblish, therefore I am". The same went for Social Media marketing: initially, nobody knew what it was worth; nevertheless, businesses at various speeds understood they just had to be here. They could not afford to pass, although they could not measure the ROI then.

So naturally the next step was ROI. We've reached this step. We've witnessed this maturing process at Scoop.it: when we launched (3 years ago) users and clients would initially join because "Content is King" - but did not quite know how much the King was worth. Now they join because good content curation has a positive ROI.

So the questions of how to source content, and what are the respective values, performances and ROI of each source are utterly important ones.

Comprehensive comparison between created and curated content for marketing in this paper; with an objective demonstration of the efficiency of curated content for businesses.

Teasing: stay tuned, more coming on this subject from Ally Greer.

Naomi Assaraf's comment, October 1, 2014 12:24 PM
It think it's a healthy balance of about 80% curated vs 20% created content. Clearly, curated content makes up for much larger real estate on your social assets; but once you've attracted your audience, they need to know there's an engaging brain behind all that content curation. And that's precisely where the 20% of created content space plays an important role: letting your audience get to know your voice so that you can give them a chance to love you enough to keep them coming back for more.

Like many large and small businesses, non-profits are often looking at social media in general and content in particular as a huge opportunity to embrace but also one that is hard to master. Limited resources, lack of inspiration, lack of credibility are often mentioned as blocking factors so that overall a lot of people are left with fear of missing out.

(From the article): Myth #7: You Aren’t a Thought Leader If You Use Third Party Content. Truthfully, I can see why digital marketers would initially think this. When I first heard of curating content, I thought the same thing. However, I quickly learned that this could not be further from the truth. Curating third party content actually does make you a thought leader for several reasons:

You show honesty: you show your audience that sometimes your influencers can write something or present something better than you. You can’t always be the best at everything, and that is OK.You can actually connect with said influencer by mentioning them on Twitter when you link to their article or content piece and get them to potentially follow you, thus building a very valuable connection. You build credibility with that third party source, and possibly attract more third parties that want to share the content that you create.Curating influencer content helps build your brand, which can lead to gaining a new audience that respects your thoughts.

As you can see, curating content does not make you take a backseat. It is an opportunity to build credibility with both your audience and your influencers.

Content curation on Wordpress: how to do it right.

Content curation on Wordpress: how to do it right. | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
One of the main ways to to leverage content curation for business is to add curated content to your website or blog. Here's how to do it right on Wordpress.
Guillaume Decugis's insight:

A comparative analysis of the various ways you can integrate curated content to a Wordpress site or blog.

Rachael Johnston's curator insight, November 19, 2014 3:50 PM

This article simply describes the benefits of content curation, the key integration options for curating, and gives insightful tips on how to optimize your curated content.

The key benefits of content curation for businesses are:

- Audience engagement - popular and engaging content catches the readers (potential clients) interest and encourages and creates conversation

- SEO - simply put, helps stretch out the spider legs and spread the webpage/blogs URL

- Social Traffic - increase of readers, followers, commenters, etc. as the curated content can redirect the readers to your homepage

- Conversions - readers who look at the curated content on your webpage can lead to sales. The curation pages can include call-to-action buttons, Newsletter requests, Free demo options.

*These four benefits are all inter-related it seems.  Audience engagement and social traffic go hand in hand, as the more traffic you get the more likely you are to also see an increase in comments, likes, retweets, etc. Additionally, The curated content brings viewers to  the main webpage, where there conversions can now be seen. When audience engagement increases social traffic also increase to the homepage, leading to more conversions. All of these factors, the audience engagement, and increases in social traffic and conversions all leads to SEO improvements.

Key Integration Options:

- Embed a sidebar widget - RSS feed of your curated content or ScoopIt widget

* This option does not contain a description or content

* RSS feed is not visually appealing

- Embed curated content pages - embed a ScoopIt it page but cutting and pasting the embed code

* When a reader clicks on the curated page they will be redirected to the original source. This is not optimal. We want the reader to be redirected back to our homepage or blog where a call-to-action button  is present.

- Embed a CSM integration with WordPress to turn your curated content into WordPress posts - The issue here is differentiating between the curated and created content. You want to make sure it is clear that it is curated. This can be done by putting all curated content into its own category. If tree are several topics, divide by tops (ex: industry news, Marketing Trends, etc.)

* I think this is a good way to add curated content to your webpage without looking like you are stealing the credit for anybody's work or from the original.

I am currently working as an intern at Local Trades Search for Nigel Kay, the first guest speaker this semester. I hope to try to add curated content to the WordPress account i am currently working on.

Adding curated content can drive SEO, increase engagement, and help position yourself as a leader with expertise

How Content Curation Informs Content Creation

How Content Curation Informs Content Creation | Content curation trends | Scoop.it

If you are actively curating content as a business strategy, you are sitting on a great source of guidance to help you pick good topics. Of course you’ll monitor success of your own content over time. But there’s more. You should keep tabs on a wider range of content to expand your purview.

Guillaume Decugis's insight:

Content curation is not just a placeholder for the lack of inspiration or time to create great content. While it certainly can help publish relevant good content in the lack of a brilliant original content idea, it's also a great way to generate some

As this post highlights in the context of a content marketing strategy, you will understand what type of content you need to create if you consistently watch what's going on in your industry through regular content curation. By publishing the content you've curated, you will also generate and measure reactions from your target audience. Think of it as real life market study for content strategists.

So as I've often commented, this is the reason why content curation often is the easiest strategy to start as part of a content plan: not only because it comes naturally by building on what you already do (read content on your topics of expertise) but also because it makes the original content creation part easier and better.

As so many brands have done, Mozilla — the non-profit foundation behind the Firefox browser — has become a media entity, by launching an online magazine that it says will focus on reporting about open technologies
Guillaume Decugis's insight:

The trend isn't new (I actually gave a talk last year at LeWeb about this) but while it's now more and more obvious that brands should become media, it's interesting to see how they're doing it.

As Mathew Ingram explains, Mozilla invested: they set up an editorial team and recruited a former editor at AOL and CNN. They also give a prominent place to curated content through a right column widget called "From around the Web" which is not unlike the New York Times' recent "watching" section. Following the success of the new media rockstars such as the Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, Business Insider or Upworthy, it's good to see innovative brands embrace the idea of becoming media - in the 21st century meaning of the word which is leveraging a mix of creation and curation.

Keep It Real: 3 Things To Remember About Content Curation

Keep It Real: 3 Things To Remember About Content Curation | Content curation trends | Scoop.it

There is an awful lot of content circulating around about content curation and why it is essential to well…everything, apparently. While I agree that knowledge sharing is a powerful business tool I have some doubts regarding the hows and whys of modern content curation and distribution.

Guillaume Decugis's insight:

Great points on keeping content curation real but Rachel is defining it as merely sharing content on social media. To me, the best way to define it is to add context to your content by adding an insight to it: react to the content, add meaning to it, expand on it, disagree with it, etc... For that, you need to have some form of content hub where you can do that (such as the kind we're providing through topic pages on Scoop.it but this could also be your blog).

To her point, it's also a great way to start a conversation as you've indicated: by adding your own point of view in a particular context, you invite your audience to react.

Sean Hutchinson's curator insight, October 4, 2014 11:24 AM

Great take Rachel and I have to ask, what if paragraphs two & three (the one's skipped over), take a violent left turn in opinion? A nice big thumbs up or retweet could make for an unpleasant day in the principal’s office.

The alternate scenario…..it’s their loss for missing that one sentence that spawns a new successful idea and/or strategy.

Whether for Content Marketing, Audience engagement or Thought Leadership, content curation must first follow the basic rule of Marketing: Know your target audience.

Tommy also reminds some curation-specific rules:

- Stay on theme. It's easy to lose focus when you curate because existing content is... infinite; define and respect your editorial line; curate consistently with your message and values)/

- Add value. Again, with content curation, mere sharing is possible but not enough: your personal insight, your unique perspective is required. Help, educate, inspire. And be subjective!

1. Know Your Target Audience

2. Be consistent

3. Use Content Curation Tools for Efficiency

4. Stay On Theme

5. Be Selective

6. Promote A Wide Variety of Sites

7. Don't Just Share Big Media Content

8. Spark Discussions

9. Add Value

Marc has given us a great checklist to refer to as we curate. It truly is too easy to become lost in all of the available information. Thank you, Marc for this terrific reminder about quality over quantity.

2. Be consistent

3. Use Content Curation Tools for Efficiency

4. Stay On Theme (*) It's easy to lose focus when you curate because existing content is... infinite; define and respect your editorial line; curate consistently with your message and values)/

5. Be Selective

6. Promote A Wide Variety of Sites

7. Don't Just Share Big Media Content

8. Spark Discussions

9. Add Value (*) Again, with content curation, mere sharing is possible but not enough: your personal insight, your unique perspective is required. Help, educate, inspire. And be subjective! »

(*)  curation-specific rules.

Curation whips stagnation - tips and tools to get it done

Curation whips stagnation - tips and tools to get it done | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
For the enterprise professional, curation isn't a luxury. It's about establishing topic authority, while bringing fresh ideas and content to our employers. Here's some tools and tips to get it done.
Guillaume Decugis's insight:

Jon Reed makes a great point by highlighting that professionals already do the basic - and more time consuming - part of content curation.

So, as he says "why not establish processes" that can help you benefit from the incoming content you already filter (and read) and that matches your professional interests?

The time consumption of any new strategy is indeed critical for time-constrained professionals. Strategies which leverage existing activities are you low-hanging fruits so if you're already reading and sharing content, the right tool and processes can let you curate it for (almost) the same amount of time. But for much greater impact.

5 Ways To Prove To Your Boss You Need Content Curation

5 Ways To Prove To Your Boss You Need Content Curation | Content curation trends | Scoop.it
Have You Made the Business Case For Content Curation? If not, this data will help persuade your management to invest in content curation.
Guillaume Decugis's insight:

This is a solid summary by Heidi Cohen on why content curation is besoming essential to businesses. Its role to content strategy mix has evolved from being anecdotical a few years ago to becoming central as it not only helps fill the gap but provides meaningful synergies for your created content.

Now as Heidi puts it, content curation is not free: while it's - as she puts it - "a low cost way to fill your content marketing pipeline", low doesn't mean zero. I still regularly have debates with people who think that automated aggregation can replace content curation: it doesn't. There's no way to set it up once and forget about it. You'll need to invest as little as 15 minutes a day to achieve results but these 15' need to be spent.

Blogging as a Content Curation Hub

I want to take a look at curation through the lens of blogging. How can educators and students use their blogs to become their own information curators and content curators for others in their learning community.

Guillaume Decugis's insight:

While some consider social networks to be an interesting place to start some light curation work, the curation process involves more than just sharing links. Which is why to make the content you filtered, selected and shared more impacting, you need a content curation hub

This is an interesting review of how your blog could have a second life being either dedicated to or enriched with great curated content.
